Sugar coma, anyone?

Here's your daily lesson in U.K. versus U.S. parlance: for our friends across the pond, "pudding" doesn't refer to the jiggly chocolate and/or gelatinous foodstuffs found in packs of six at the grocery store; it usually refers to a starchy dessert (though they are sometimes savory) with common British "puds" including mince pies around holiday time and sticky toffee pudding, of course.

Recently, we shared a photo gallery and a video walk-through of our room during a recent stay at London’s Athenaeum Hotel. We also included mentions of some of our favorite features, like the hotel’s extensive whisky bar, its award-winning afternoon tea, and the luxury serviced apartments it operates. Today, however, we’re going to tell you about the feature that most impressed us: the hotel’s eight-story living wall.

What’s even harder to find in London than a black cab on a rainy afternoon? A five-star luxury hotel that’s not part of a chain. Unless, that is, you’re staying at the Athenaeum Hotel.

Sure, there may be too many vowels in its name for us to keep track of, but this little family-owned hotel in Mayfair has quite a few amenities that will keep us coming back, as we discovered on a recent stay there. Follow us inside as we bring you this photo gallery and video walk-through of our room.

A free nanny makes a better companion than a bunch of balloons

Hands up who thought Mary Poppins didn’t exist? Well, you’d be right on that one, she doesn’t, but The Athenaeum Hotel in London is getting together the next best thing – it’s hired three nannies which it reckons are the best in Britain, and offering their services complimentary to guests until September 30.

The nannies were chosen as part of a nationwide contest held in conjunction with Norland Nannies, who look after the sprogs of the British aristocracy and the three women chosen had to go up in front of an interview panel consisting of two children, a half-famous actress, Lynda Bellingham, and the hotel’s Kids Concierge (yes, it has one).

Welcome to our regular feature, Pitch Your Hotel, where we let hoteliers, general managers and other hotel execs tell us on-camera what makes their hotels so different from all the rest. And believe us, the competition is fierce these days. So sit back, relax and listen to them explain why their hotels are worthy of your hard-earned dollars or rewards points.

Not keen on staying in cupboard room on your next trip to Londontown? Then why not go the opposite end of the spectrum by staying at The Athenaeum Hotel in London, one of London's very few privately run, independent hotels which has 34 townhouse apartments attached.

Naturally, these apartments lend themselves to famous folk on extended stays like Steven Spielberg (who turned one of the rooms into his film editing office) and Margaret Thatcher who chose to live in the Athenaeum while her house was being renovated. But these are also good choices for families who need more space during their trips.

Athenaeum Hotel Dressing Too Young for its Age

Old and classic is pretty much a given when it comes to London hotels located in the heart of the city. This is why they need to go a little further to impress us, whether that be with a celeb clientele or a really hot bar.

Stuart Emmrich of the New York Times recently checked into the Anthenaeum located right off Picadilly. The hotel boasted a regular Brit celeb list in its early heyday but now has undergone a renovation--perhaps to keep up said clientele.

However, Emmrich's description of the new Anthenaeum is pretty underwhelming and totally unexcited. The rooms are spacious but have lost their old plush robes post-renovation, no celebs were to be found, and Emmrich finds, this place just may be trying too hard:

Though the Athenaeum was clearly in need of a freshening up, some of the new touches almost make the hotel come across like a middle-age dowager trying to stave off the ravages of age by dressing a little too young, a little too hip -- as if the queen had suddenly shown up at one of her garden parties in Stella McCartney. (Please, bring back Hardy Aimes.)

Overall this hotel is one to grab when you're not looking for anything in particular except maybe an address or some good room service.
