London's Cumberland a mid-nineties throw back

The NY Post picks on some of the lowest hanging fruit across the pond; the newly renovated Cumberland Hotel.

The once proud and newly renovated Cumberland Hotel has risen from the ashes, but nowadays the hotel is owned and operated by Thistle, a mid-range (think Best Western) English hotel chain. Thistle took over managing a former Le Meridien property, which in itself is an extremely tough sell.

According to the Post, Thistle dumped nearly $80,000 per room into the 900 room hotel into completely redoing the guest rooms, and adding flat-screen TV's.  However, London journalists are panning the property as an Alice-in-wonderland type place that reeks of the mid-nineties.  Think giant open spaces with oversized furniture.
