Summer in London is Cheap at The Cavendish
We thoroughly approve of any hotel that says “we’re making London more affordable”, so hats off to The Cavendish, which is unleashing a summer offer which is slashing its room rates.
The Summer London Breaks offer gets you one night in a classic double room, plus a full English breakfast (although it doesn’t include 15% VAT), from £139 on weekends, or £129 during the week (a pretty miraculous midweek rate for a nice four star, going on our efforts to find a room for some friends that wasn’t a hovel a few weeks back.
And this is a nice place right on posh Jermyn Street in Mayfair, where the gents can spend their leftover cash on a nice tailored suit.
Here’s the small print: it’s limited availability, only available from July 24 to September 6, and you’ll have to stay at least two nights (though that’s hardly a trial at these prices). It’s also non-refundable and non-changeable, and you have to pay the full fare up-front. Barring swine flu, though, you should be fine. August in London will be lovely. Promise.

London's Cavendish Hotel Goes Carbon Neutral for Meetings

The Cavendish in London is apparently not just determined to make us fit, but also to make us environmentally responsible. Which of course isn't a bad thing at all.
Recently the Cavendish launched "green meetings" for guests using the conference and meeting facilities, and this means that they're providing 1 (US$1.50) as a carbon offset for every delegate guest. And, they're quick to point out, the hotel is donating this money from its own pockets, rather than adding it on to the bills (although really, in the end it all comes from the same place, right?).
This is all a warm and fuzzy thing to do, but we're not at all sure why it's only meeting delegates who get to enjoy that warm and fuzzy feeling. We're hoping that the Cavendish will start carbon offsetting for all hotel guests, including holidaymakers and tourists. But, of course, without increasing their very reasonable rates.

Hotel Fitness Goes Mad at the Cavendish in London

Fitness freaks might be excited by a new offer at The Cavendish in London. They've just done a deal with British Military Fitness--a gang made up of serving soldiers and ex-servicemen--to provide workouts for guests at Hyde Park. We are guessing these are going to be tough workouts, not a cheerful stroll through the greenery.
The UK Times picked up on this with an opinion we definitely share:
Isn't the whole point of being in a hotel to slob around watching movies and making a mess of the sheets? "You don't have to go," it says. "It's optional, but it'd do you good."
And we thought the only person who was allowed to say "it'd do you good" was our mother. If you're different to us and want to be pushed around (and admittedly, get fitter and healthier) on your next London vacation then check the Cavendish. It has advance booking rates of £72 (US$140) a night.
While we appreciate this type of healthy hotel service, we promise you will never see us doing the Hyde Park workout. More likely we'll be sprawled on the reputedly comfy beds.

The De Vere Cavendish St. James's Hotel May Have Come Up With a Bestseller
London's De Vere Cavendish Hotel is offering a new service. In a new partnership with Waterstones Piccadilly, Europe's largest bookstore, the De Vere's "Book at Bedtime" program can hook you up with the book of your choice within minutes. Guests can choose a title from the hotel's Recommended Reading list or request a copy of that book they left at home or have been meaning to pick up; all it takes is a call to the concierge.
An optional service for frequent travellers who like to read in bed or who want a cozy, personalized touch in an otherwise impersonal (albeit lux) hotel room, the program may be a little too personal for some.
