Itís less than two years ago we welcomed a second InterContinental hotel to London, with the Westminster outpost setting up next to New Scotland Yard, a walk across St Jamesís and Green Park to its Park Lane sibling. Itís less than a year ago we talked about a third InterContinental coming to the city, this time much further east at the O2 arena.
Things have taken a very unexpected turn though this month, with the InterContinental Westminster going and now gone, becoming the surprise return of Conrad Hotels to the city. As of now, the hotel on Broadway is known as the Conrad London St. James, a major move up from the previous Conrad location in Chelsea Harbour (now a Millenium Monogram Collection if you recall). Still with us? Itís all in the hotel rebranding game.

The 256-room property is the first InterContinental to open in London in 36 years, joining its sibling, InterContinental Park Lane, a ten-minute walk across St Jamesís and Green Park. Though only half of the rooms are in operation at the moment, the hotelís public spaces are already in full swing, with Blue Boar Smokehouse & Bar packed with locals on a recent Thursday evening.

In the lead up to the look inside we plan to give you once fully finished, we had the opportunity to put on some high-visibility gear and a hard hat last week and see the site as it is today. But sadly, one hotel will not make it in time.
The InterContinental Westminster has pushed back its opening date from Spring 2012 to Spring 2013. This hotel has already been delayed once before, having missed opening in time for the Royal Wedding. (Hat tip to commenter guanche who pointed out the delay.)
We've been hearing about this property for a few years now but we're guessing its running into some issues with the renovations. The hotel was originally built as a hospital and was previously in use by the government as home for the Treasury Solicitor. Not an easy conversion task.
Still, ever hopeful, the hotel does have a Facebook page.
With so much progress on the London hotel front, there was bound to be another delay sooner or later. This time, we learn it's the forthcoming InterContinental London Westminster which has pushed its opening back from late 2011 to the spring 2012. Just in time for the Olympics of course.
Westminster is having a bit of a hotel resurgence these days with the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, the Tune Hotel and the new Mint Hotel. But the InterContinental will surely be bringing the posh with it when it opens, and some history too.
Set in a former Treasury building, steeped in history, the hotel will become part of the famous ĎWestminster Villageí renowned for itís political gossip, the drama in the corridors of power and the glamour of the Royal and diplomatic circuit.
