Unlike New York, the list of rooftop bars in London isn’t that long, and even fewer can boast floor-to-ceiling windows with river views and outdoor space for al-fresco lounging and drinking, but Rumpus Room has both.

Following a snapshot on Wednesday, it’s time to take a closer look at Mondrian London at Sea Containers, now finally open on the city’s Southbank. Getting inside the hotel is possible from the river if you’re on foot, but the main entrance – white curtains, candles, and all – is on Upper Ground, where construction on Southbank Tower is still in full swing.
Up a few steps and past the second of two oversized interlocking anchor chains (the first is outside), you’ll find reception (above), sliced out of the copper hull that runs all the way to the river, with spotlights marking its shape as a dotted line on the floor.

We said on Monday that September was making its last two days count in London, and it did: following the opening of The Beaumont in tony Mayfair, we finally had a chance to see inside Mondrian at Sea Containers last night.
The references to the building’s history are everywhere: from the copper hull that cuts from the entrance past reception to the riverside restaurant in a sweeping curve to the actual containerships displayed in the lounge above.
It’s a double treat today from Morgans Hotel Group: not only do we have an opening date of September 30 for Mondrian London at Sea Containers, along with some pretty great introductory offers, we finally have room images as well.
Above is what a Standard Room looks like, mixing shades of grey with a punch of pink in just over 310 sq ft. We love the “transatlantic 1920s liner” references, with the curved corner of the bathroom, the wall panelling, and the groovy mirror. For a limited time, rooms are starting at £165 (about $280) a night excluding VAT.
We’re still recovering from a major week in London hotels; who wouldn’t be when it was book-ended by the likes of Ace Shoreditch and The London Edition? That’s not so say of course we’re taking our eye of the ball when it comes to the future, as we know the list of openings is long - and continues to grow for that matter.
A recent walk by the Mondrian London on Southbank showed some interesting progress, with scaffolding starting to come down the front façade. Even more, an entire wing has shown up on the western side of the building, with a rather different design than the original Sea Containers House. We have a before and after picture for you after the jump.
