Landmark London's Hip New Bar Keeps It a Bit Too Old-Fashioned

We've been wondering for the past couple of years why London appeared to have turned into a building site, and now the answer's clear: because every hotel in the capital seems to be going through a refurb, and every other landowner appears to be building a hotel.

The latest to unveil its new wares is the Landmark. It's spent £1m re-doing its restaurant and bar, and it opens tomorrow.

While the name has been sexed up (Cellars Restaurant has become the down-with-the-kids twotwentytwo), they've kept some of the original fittings — oak paneling and antique fireplaces — but, by the looks of things, tarted it up with chandeliers that look like jellyfish and rather dapper armchairs.

What we really like the sound of is the "Wine Library": a display case of wine running down one side of the bar. What we're less keen on is the sound of the cocktail menu which divides drinks up into those suitable "for him" and "for her." Chaps, we know you're a historic hotel and all, but some of us ladies like to choose our own drinks these days. Next thing we know, you'll be enforcing a dress code of tweed-n-pearls. And, um, no thanks.

Rooms on Sale at London's Landmark Hotel

It’s sales time! And just when the shop ones are trailing off (unless you’re in the mood for everyone else’s rejects), London’s Landmark Hotel has started its own sale.

It may not be quite on the same scale of The Hoxton’s £1 offer, but it’s still not bad – stay before 30 April, and you can get a weekend room for £140 ($200). At £229 ($327), weekdays are a bit more, but you’re still saving half the price on the official rates – although the 20% off spa treatments that they’re also offering could gobble up your spare change…

The sale ends on Sunday, so move quick. After all, you wouldn’t want to end up in the Cromwell Crown…

The Landmark London Is A Pretty Expensive Landmark

A few years back Amazing Racers Rob and Amber won five nights at the Landmark London and we’ve always wondered if they enjoyed it. This week a UK Times review gave us a peek into life at the Landmark and based on that, we’re figuring Rob and Amber would’ve enjoyed their freebie since the worst thing about the Landmark is its price.

The Landmark has a history stretching back to 1899 but thankfully nearly every part of it has been renovated since then except the hairdryers. The Times reviewer said the hairdryers were so old that she ended up spending an evening out in London with wet hair.

The biggest thumbs ups go to the good service, great breakfast (especially the hash browns) and the pool and spa. But since it’s not a total luxury place and isn’t exactly up-to-the-minute stylish, we’re not sure that a regular room rate of £430 (almost US$700) a night is justified. You can sometimes find cheaper rates online or better deals with packages like their weekender for £239 (US$385) and then you don’t risk being too disappointed.

Have you stayed at the Landmark before? Was it worth it? Let us know.

Amazing Race 7 Hotel Report: Rob and Amber

Hey Amazing Race cast, jealous much? The Amazing Race 7 has turned into Rob & Amber vs. A Bunch Of Faceless Haters. Since this cast of Amazing Race constantly gets distracted by the presence of the legendary reality couple, this week, so will we.

Rob and Amber were victorious again this week, their victory prize? 5 days and 5 nights at the Landmark in London. So what kind of stay can Rob and Amber look forward to post race?

According to one recent visitor:

My husband and I stayed here for one night in January 2005. Being typically British and therefore pessimistic we didn't expect The Landmark London to be exceptional but it truly was. Many London hotels are cramped, expensive, dirty and the service leaves a lot to be desired but that was not the case at The Landmark London.

Now Rob is far from "typically British", however, we are fairly sure the smart mouthed Red Sox fan and his demure girlfriend will enjoy stately service at the Landmark.

With The Osbournes going dark, and The Newlyweds hitting a rough patch, we are no doubt only months away from "The Rob & Amber Show." Maybe the premiere can revolve around their post race Landmark visit. You listening Brurnett?
