A Taste of Italy in Seattle for Recessionistas

We swoon for all things Italian (pasta, leather footwear, gelato, dark wavy hair...) but right now, our pocketbook is feeling more "stay domestic cheap" than "maxxed-out credit card European fabulous."

So, when the Seattle Art Museum opens its Michelangelo Public and Private: Drawings for the Sistine Chapel and other Treasures from the Casa Buonarroti exhibit on October 15th, we're thinking a stay at nearby Alexis Hotel with its "Art of Michelanglo" package will be a whole lot more economical than round-trip fare to Florence. And since SAM is the only place showing this collection in the United States, it looks like you just gotta come to Seattle to see it.

When Lilo and Samantha Ronson split back in April, our favorite rehabber dyed her hair back to trademark red and got a new tattoo. When Kim Kardashian parted ways from her football boyfriend, Reggie Bush late this summer, the raven-haired beauty hit the peroxide bottle and went blonde. (Both couples seem to be back on again. For now.)

So, whether you’re rebounding from a nasty divorce or an unforeseen break-up (our condolences, we know how much break-ups suck), Spaahh at Hotel 1000 is on hand with its Back on the Market Package to help wash that man (or woman) right out of your hair.

Let’s take a moment to raise a toast and wax poetic to the booze-fueled beauty that is Sorrento Hotel’s school of imbibing education, Drinking Lessons. Twice a month, the hotel’s Hunt Club will host a cocktail savant for a two-hour, in-depth exploration in the preparation and history of three different cocktails.

Here’s the upcoming August sched:

President Liquid Relations/Co-Founder Aviation Gin, Magarian’s “chef like” approach to mixology has garnered countless media mentions, including New York Times, Food and Wine, People Magazine, US Weekly, and Men’s Health.

August 24 (5:30 & 8 p.m.): Murray Stenson
Arguably one of the best bartenders in the country, bar seats at Zig Zag Café are at a premium when Stenson’s working Tuesday – Friday nights. Playboy named him one of the nation’s top ten mixologists in 2007.

We didn’t hide our love for BOKA Kitchen + Bar, so when we caught wind that the restaurant was launching a new Angelic Morsels/Sinful Indulgences menu for the Spaah (yeah, just like that) at Hotel 1000, we just had to pop in and try it out. Timing-wise, it didn’t hurt that our feet were in desperate need of some summer lovin’.

Spaahh offers the usual treatments from facials, massage, manis/pedis, and treatments made just for the men. The space is small but there’s something instantly soothing about not needing to make a mental map to navigate a day spa.

If you’ve ever been to Hotel 1000 then you know that this popular after work spot boasts one of downtown Seattle’s best (if not the best, IMO) happy hours. Chef Angie Roberts takes BOKA’s culinary program seriously and doesn’t slack for happy hour just because prices are slashed. Instead, her nearly 80% organic menu shines on spruced up comforty American favorites, with – dare we say – a bit of urban flare. When we stayed at Hotel 1000 the other month, eating at BOKA was the highlight of our trip. That and the Space Needle of course!

Over the weekend we spent a few days in Seattle checking out the city's coffee shops, fish markets and, of course, the hotel scene. This week we'll be putting forth our reviews and observations on Seattle's hotels, of which there are plenty. Got any questions or suggestions? Let us know.

Yesterday we gave you the full review of the Hotel 1000 in Seattle but we don't feel as if we spent enough time talking about the tub. Yes, we want to talk more about the tub. This is a free-standing bathtub where the controls are on the wall to the left and the water pours down from the ceiling. It's soooo cool.

At first, we had no idea how to work this thing. When we peered in there was only a drain but no hot or cold handles. Then we spotted the control on the wall and we moved it. A large splat happened behind us and we jumped. That's when we realized the noise was coming from the ceiling.

It took a few tries to get the water temperature right but once we did, we poured in the bubbles and waited until the tub was full. Then we just relaaaaaaxed.

A while back we had a nice little weekend getaway to Seattle all planned out. Then we got sick the day of our departure. And not just head-cold sick but vertigo sick. The kind of sick where you can't stand up or sit up without fear of your head falling off. We would guess it's a close second to the fear of swine flu.

Our reservation at a hotel that we booked using Expedia was uncancellable at that time and as we told you, we had to eat the room rate (However, the lady at Expedia did feel bad and gave us a $50 Expedia credit.) But now we can let you know that the hotel we were supposed to stay in was Hotel 1000.

Despite all this, we really wanted to stay here so we rebooked it through the hotel. Here's what we got.

Adventures in Rebranding: Seattle's Arctic Club Now a Doubletree

After the cool, boutiquey Arctic Club in Seattle opened its doors over the summer, things headed in the direction of the South Pole for the property: though a New York Times review gave the place major exposure, it wasn't enough to sustain it. In January, it downgraded everything: some room rates dropped down to $166, its luxury rating went from four diamonds to three.

But now it seems they've gotten some help from a major chain. Hilton announced today that the property will become part of their Doubletree brand, and the hotel will be reflagged as Doubletree Arctic Club Hotel Seattle – Downtown by mid-May.

The Arctic Club Hotel in Seattle Downgrades Everything

The Arctic Club Hotel in Seattle opened it doors over the summer but already the hotel has run into some major problems. Citing the crappy economy, the hotel has downgraded its luxury rating from four diamonds to three. And it's looking for some help from a big franchiser. The Puget Sound Business Journal reports:

The newly opened 120-room hotel at 700 Third Ave. in downtown Seattle will soon announce a partnership with a national franchise brand, hotel officials said.

“Recent economic factors are driving the Arctic Club Hotel ownership to make a decision that will rebrand its services to that of a three-diamond hotel,” said Stan Kott, hotel general manager, in a statement.

The fine-dining establishment will also be downgraded to a more urban, casual restaurant. Room rates seem to have come down as well. The hotel is offering a special 10 percent off rates. We found king rooms open for next weekend at $166.50 a night. That's down quite a bit from the opening rate of $275 a night.

It seems that things haven't been going well at the hotel for a while. A few months ago, the NYT reviewed the place and was dismayed at the lack of in-room amenities and even, service.

Seattle might be known for its coffee and its rain, but if you're visiting you might have a hard time making a day of drinking coffee and wearing raincoats. Never fear bored tourists, the Renaissance Seattle Hotel wants to cultivate the art lover inside of you.

General Manager Rene Neidhart, an art lover, will be taking advantage of their downtown location and leading patrons to the once-a-month First Thursday Art Walk:

Winding through the cobblestoned streets of downtown's oldest neighborhood, art patrons will accompany Neidhart to the cream of Seattle's art venues, enjoying complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvre as the tour progresses. With more than 60 galleries, coffeehouses and shops participating in the Art Walk, there's something for art aficionados of every stripe.

Sixty galleries is pretty overwhelming, but we hear it's choose you own adventure--you decide which art strikes your fancy and when you'd rather sit back and enjoy that complimentary wine.

We found a room for $229 for November's Art Walk this Thursday.

Arctic Club Hotel Forgets the Little Things

The New York Times checked into the Arctic Club Hotel this weekend and came back with a review that reads like your girlfriend’s account of why she finally broke up with that guy who was sooooo good looking, but inattentive.

The Times loved the hotel’s “dashing” back story—it’s on the National Register of Historic Places, having been designed in 1916—and it’s “handsome, spacious L-shaped rooms,” but as the writer’s mother often says, “handsome is as handsome does,” and it’s in the things that matter where the Arctic Club Hotel falls short.

The writer and his family arrived “to find no one to greet us or take our bags,” leaving them to haul their own luggage. Their room was without the promised coffees or teas, an inexcusable offense for sure, but the final insult came when the writer had to fix his own toilet that wouldn’t flush. (Though it’s unclear whether the writer called the front desk for help before taking matters into his own—hopefully eventually washed—hands.)

The bottom line? Despite the witty design and accommodating staff, “the hotel still isn’t getting the details right,” and so the Times dropped the Arctic Club Hotel like a bad habit.

Seattle To Get a New Old Luxury Hotel

The Arctic Club Hotel in Seattle will open its doors for the first time on Wednesday but unlke most new hotspots popping up these days, this hotel comes with its own interesting history.

The Arctic Club was an exclusive gentlemen's club formed in 1908 and filled with members who had made their wealth in Alaska with Klondike gold. Naturally, a men's club of this stature needed a headquarters so the building at 700 Third Ave became the Arctic Club Building, complete with ivory walrus tusks on the wall.

Now 100 years and 1 spot on the National Register of Historic Places later, the building has been reborn as a high-end hotel.
