The Nines Hotel's Departure Restaurant Drops Anchor in Portland

Hot on the heels of the NYT’s gush-fest, the Nines Hotel in Portland has opened Departure Restaurant + Lounge for dinner and happy hour. Roosting from the 15th floor, the rooftop spot proffers a bird’s-eye panorama of Portland's bridges and mountain peaks beyond. Chef Bryan Emperor, a transplant by way of NYC and Virginia, serves a "modern Asian menu" with a "casual dining experience akin to a neighborhood pub." (Translation: Southeast Asia fare, Japanese-style Izakaya.)

Conceived by the Denver-based Sage Restaurant Group, the restaurant's name and aesthetic is a nod to the days when Portlanders took the monorail in the Meier & Frank Building (where the hotel is housed) and "when an 'around the world' ocean voyage was de rigueur for the modern traveler." That means worldly accents like marine teak decking, sailcloth panels, nautical map murals, ship portals in the corridor leading to the restrooms, and a teak-clad "smokestack" that floats above the bar.

NYT Also Wowed to the Nines by the Nines Hotel

There are very few things a hotel geek loves more than a chic hotel that lives up to all of its own hype. Throw in an eco-friendly sensibility, free Wi-Fi, and a leathery library, and we're positively smitten — and it seems the New York Times is on the same page.

This past weekend, a Times-er checked in to the Nines Hotel in Portland and, like us, gushed about the "fanciful" hotel's location, design, service, and amenities.

For the uninitiated, the Nines Hotel occupies the top nine floors of downtown Portland's historic Meier & Frank Building, with Macy's taking up the first five levels. The Nines is seeking LEED Silver certification, which translates to green touches like dual-flush toilets. The NYT particularly spotlights the hotel’s arty side ("a 419-piece collection by artists with local ties," "striking" art like a 30-foot chandelier by Melody Owen) and design (including a light-flooded atrium complete with "sheer-draped glass gazebos").

The Nines Hotel in Portland is a Luxury Collection Hotel from Starwood and we're not sure we've ever seen an LC hotel with rates this low. To celebrate the rest of 2009, the hotel is offering $99 room rates for 99 days.

The luxurious new Starwood Luxury Collection Hotel in the famed Meier & Frank building in the heart of downtown is kicking off 2009 with a rate starting at just $99 per night. Better hurry, however: this extraordinary rate, which started January 9, 2009, is only available for 99 days. Travelers must reference the “99 for 99” package when booking, and must stay before April 18, 2009.

We stayed at The Nines back in November when it first opened and loved it, particularly the 8th floor library (above.) However back then, opening rates were $249 a night. So consider this a steal.

The Nines Wows Us to the Nines

We spent the weekend in luxury at Starwood's Luxury Collection's latest opening, Portland's the Nines. Yesterday we gave you a video tour of the room, now we break down our stay.

Location, Location, Location We were literally in the center of the city. The building itself--the old Meier & Frank Building--has so much history it has it's own Wikipedia entry and it shares the building with Macy's. You can't take the elevator to the shoe floor, though, you have to go down to the street level and walk around the corner. We were walking distance from all the Portland hotspots and could jump on the MAX free city rail from the corner. City views were great--we could see the bridge and the renovations on the historic Pioneer Courthouse.

Atrium view rooms overlook the 8th floor lobby and restaurant. Commenter Delane questions the natural light in the atrium, but we're pretty sure it's natural. If not, it's simulated real well, which might be necessary is inclement climates.

We hit up the brand, spankin' new Nines Hotel in Portland this weekend.

It opened just a few weeks ago, and we know for a fact we were the first to use the hair dryer in room 1049. Perhaps we were the first to stay there? The carpets sure were clean. Nothing like the smell of new hotel.

A full review is coming tomorrow, but we'll spoil the ending for you: we loved it.
