Hyatt Regency Mission Bay is Throwing Kids a Poolside Halloween Party
Instead of trick-or-treating in the cold, where your kid's forced to put a bulky coat over his adorable Transformers costume, you can spend Halloween with the fam poolside at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina, so you can get some sun in San Diego while you partake in spooky events.
This is the first time the hotel is getting into the holiday spirit with Halloween happenings. The hotel's three water slides will get a scary twist with haunted music accompaniment and creepy lights. While you're in the water, you can watch The Nightmare Before Christmas, which will be screened near the pool. There'll also be a "Monster Mash" hula-hoop contest and fireside stories as well. But it wouldn't be Halloween without some treats, so while you watch the movie, gobble on s'mores oozing with orange marshmallows and candy corn.

Guests Get Free Bay Cruises at San Diego's Bahia Resort

Tons of hotels have amenities like fitness rooms and pools. But the Bahia Resort Hotel in San Diego offers an unusual perk: free cruises in lovely Mission Bay.
Located on a secluded 14-acre peninsula, the hotel is in a prime spot for a cruise. The Bahia takes advantage of the location with its Bahia Belle, a turn-of-the-century, Mississippi-style sternwheeler that circles the bay in a 45-minute to one-hour cruise.
The boat makes stops at the hotel and its sister property the Catamaran Resort Hotel, whose guests also get a complimentary cruise. You can disembark and head into Catamaran's Moray's Lounge for some free live jazz piano on Fridays and Saturdays. But there's no need to leave the ship to hear some tunes, as the cruise offers live swinging blues, DJs and dancing.

Another Hotel Rate Gimmick: Your Room Rate is the Year You Were Born

Tower23 Hotel wants to give you a birthday present. To celebrate your big day, the San Diego hotel offers the three-night "It's My Party" package, in which you get one night discounted according to the year you were born.
The way it works is if you stay at the beachside hotel during your birthday month for two nights, the third night will cost the price of your birth year. For example, if you were born in 1980, you'll pay $80 on the third evening of your stay. So the older you are, the better the deal. The birthday girl or guy also will get a complimentary bottle of bubbly at check-in (so there's also a 21-and-older requirement). It's not a chocolate cake with candles, but we'll take it. The b-day package will be available through July 31.

Room With a Killer View: Down on the Boardwalk at San Diego
We are suckers for a room with a killer view. We find that we are even more likely to forgive some minor hotel inconveniences if we can stare out the window at something pretty--yeah we are that shallow. Let's help out our fellow hotel mavens by uploading rooms with killer views to the HotelChatter/Flickr photo pool, or by sending the photo along to us. We will feature our favorites in this space from time to time. Remember to tell us the name of the hotel and the room number of the hot view.

San Diego's Tower 23 bills itself as the only luxury hotel on the beach around San Diego and as an urban beach resort, and when we see killer views like this one that our punk koala dropped in the HotelChatter Flickr pool, we are happy to agree that it's a true beach hangout.
Even the name is 100% entwined with the beach: Tower 23 is the number of the Pacific Beach lifeguard tower in front of the hotel. At Tower 23, however, this is not your Pacific Island beach view with nothing but rolling waves to watch--more likely there'll be hundreds of boardwalk visitors and beachcombers--so don't expect privacy and calm to go with the beautiful view. If you're happy with a bit more excitement and action, then you're in the right place.

There's really not much to hate about this view from the beachfront hotel, Tower 23 in San Diego.
However, we know for a fact that the other side of the building overlooks a Smart & Final parking lot so be sure to request a Surf Room.

Angeleno Hotel: Can it open this month?

Yesterday, we took these photos of the new Joie De Vivre property, Hotel Angeleno, which was scheduled to open early this month. Though we didn't check out the inside, our guess would be that Angeleno saw its shadow yesterday and may not be open for another six weeks or so.
The penthouse floors, which are to include a restaurant, were boarded up, construction crews were all over the place and they didn't look like they would be packing up anytime soon.
Now we know hotels have pulled off soft openings while construction is still going on, and we hope Angeleno shows up up and hands out key cards in the next two weeks, but in the meantime, people looking to stay in Los Angeles near the Getty musuem can settle for the Luxe Hotel across the street (and just a few feet further from the freeway exit that surrounds the Angeleno property.) Stay tuned.

San Diego Hotel Scene: Tower 23's Beach Vibe
Tower 23 Hotel is not in San Diego proper but about a 10-minute ride from downtown in Pacific Beach.
For those looking for more of a beach experience than a city experience, this is the place to be. The hotel sits literally at the edge of the beach, near the pier and in the middle of everything--beachgoers, bikers, joggers, skaters, rollerbladers, etc. The inside decor of the hotel is minimalist (no furniture accents like at the Hotel Solamar here) and white. It's so white, it almost feels institutional.
All of the hotel's 44 rooms are given different names depending on the view. Surf has ocean views, sky rooms have partial views of the ocean and spirit rooms have the "non-ocean" views or put more bluntly, the view of the Smart&Final parking lot.
More on Tower23 and pictures after the jump.

Tower23 in San D
The LA Times calls the soon-to-be-opened Tower23 Hotel in San Diego an aspiring "uber-hip habitat."
The 44-room hotel is set to open near the Crystal Pier at Pacific Beach on July 15.
"With room categories such as Sweet Suite and Surf Pad and a restaurant menu with headings such as 'way cool' and 'getting warm,' Tower23 Hotel sounds a bit like '50s beatnik meets the beach.
On the web site the hotel says its a mixture of plenty things from "london chic" to "sydney vibe" to "south beach sizzle."
Staying true to its location, the hotel was named after a nearby lifeguard tower and uses lots of glass windows so that the beach and ocean are always in view.
Instead of a nightclub or regular swimming pool, the hotel will have " a wading pool with a waterfall and fiber-optic illumination at night, teak tables and chairs, and food and bar service."
Another thing the hotel will have is exclusivity. The pool/bar areas is only open to hotel guests and their friends.
Is the velvet rope coming to San Diego?
