Parisi Is the Little Green Hotel that Could

When you hear about hotels going green, names of the big brands pop up, like Kimpton and The Westin. But little guys are leading the eco charge too, like the Hotel Parisi, inconspicuously tucked away above a Roxy/Quicksilver and a Victoria's Secret in tony La Jolla, California.

One of the 29-room boutique hotel's greenest accomplishments has been becoming the first and only hotel in the San Diego area to offset all of the electricity it consumes with wind power, according to hotel officials. It purchased 294,000 kilowatt hours of renewable energy credits, thereby lessening its carbon footprint. To save more on electricity, the hotel installed a keycard-activated light system, which ensures that the lights are off when guests leave the room to go to the nearby coves.

Wine-Tasting in Temecula Just as Expensive as Wine-Tasting in Napa

Sorry Temecula Valley, try as we might, we aren’t blown away by most wine coming from your region. Maybe someday, but right now, we think a little more finesse is in order to play with California's big guns.

Nevertheless, we heart wine and want to stay in the loop of what’s new (without having to commit to buying a whole bottle without a little R&D) and find the best way to sip, swirl and swallow your way through any wine region is by spending some time in its tasting rooms. Timing-wise, we're on the heels of grape harvest and there's no better time to witness the action of what goes into picking and processing grapes to make the almighty elixir we call wine.

Personal preferences aside, Temecula Valley is a far more civilized experience than braving the always-packed tasting rooms of certain unnamed wine regions in Northern California. Just saying.

HotelMaven Courtney May recently tripped to the Estancia La Jolla, an hour north of San Diego, California. Her Flickr photostream has several shots of the hotel's exterior including this shot of the hotel's Mustangs and Burros bar.

Hotel La Jolla Rooms with a View

We recently stayed on the 10th floor at the Hotel La Jolla. The view was definitely nice, but the 11th floor has a restaurant and can be noisy until midnight (that's if you happen to be in the room before midnight sick with the flu instead of partying it up downtown).  So perhaps you'll want to stay between the 6th to 9th floors if you go.

The location is very convenient to either downtown La Jolla or to the university or shopping at UTC.

The room we had, however, was very basic, and not very big. But for $129 in La Jolla, one can't ask for much.

The restaurant also boasts a terrific view, and the food was good.

In a freak accident, one old lady hit three other elderly women in front of La Valencia Hotel in San Diego yesterday.

"Witnesses told us that the Mercedes driver became mad after she backed into a 2003 Ford Bronco, then put the car in drive, accelerated and hit the women," Sgt. Tom Carmody said.—The San Diego Union Tribune

One woman was hospitalized with two broken legs while the other two women's injuries were less serious.

La Valencia has been a treasured La Jolla icon since 1926.
