HotelChatter tipster Ray Burger recently gave us the tip that the Ambrose Hotel in Santa Monica is worthy of being included in a list of top green hotels in the US. We've already mentioned the reasonable prices at the Ambrose, along with its big bathrooms, so the fact that it's also not doing badly in the environmental department is a bonus.

The Ambrose is proud to be green, and the "Green Initiatives" button hits you pretty loud and clear from their website. Their goal is to offer their guests "truly holistic hospitality" and there are a number of ways they try to achieve this, including using ecologically-responsible cleaning products, recycling and composting.

In fact, staff at the Ambrose have put together a really long list of all the eco-friendly activities at the hotel, covering areas such as energy and water conservation, waste reduction, alternative transportation and staff and guest awareness. On top of that, they've also won a few prizes for being green, like Santa Monica's Sustainable Quality Award Grand Prize, among others. Seems like the Ambrose is extremely serious about being green, so it's a worthy addition to your list if you want to take an eco-friendly vacation.

Lindsay Lohan Blacklisted from Swanky Shutters on the Beach Hotel

So says Star magazine. The tabloid reports in its newest issue that serial rehabber Lindsay Lohan is now banned from the Shutters on the Beach Hotel in Santa Monica after she spent three days in their holed up with her now ex-boyfriend Riley Giles. The terrible twosome reportedly spent their time depleting the mini-bar and leaving dirty towels and cigarette butts strewn about their suite (room 645.)

The mag also says:

"Staffers went into clean and were shocked," says the source. "It was a pigpen. There was filth everywhere and the room stank of cigarette smoke.

"There was also a bloody syringe that someone left lying on the bedside tabl on a room service tray. Hotel security photographed it before calling someone to remove it because it was considered hazardous waste."

Yuck. The hotel also had to call in a professional cleaning crew to clean up the mess that Lohan made. The last word in all of this is that Shutters has blacklisted her. And thank god they did. We like this place and wouldn't want it to go the way of the Mondrian West Hollywood, another place where La Lohan had a hotel meltdown.

Jennifer Aniston Not Too Big of a Celeb to Talk to Hotel Valet

Or at least we think she's talking to him. By the look on his face, he's definitely talking to her. But maybe Aniston was just trying to hide from the photographers as she lunched at Shutters on the Beach last week in Santa Monica, reportedly with her bad-boy date, Paul Sculfor, who has made the news lately for being a former coke addict and hungry fame seeker. Just another day in Hollywood, huh?

An Alternative to Santa Monica's Pricey Beach Hotels

Sure, we would all like to make like Pam Anderson and stay at Shutters on the Beach or even hit up the Viceroy for a few nights, but those places can get expensive.

So consider the Ambrose Hotel on 20th and Arizona. It's not quite a beachfront alternative, being 20 blocks from the beach but it will help your wallet out. The exterior with its Tibet meets Arts and Crafts, and Koi pool, beckons one to a 21st century shangri-la, particularly if you have just narrowly escaped some bumbling service at  the Best Western around the corner.

This mini-boutique hotel has many of the perks of its high rent cousins for just $199 a night like extra comfortable beds, wireless internet service, HBO, and an ultra gourmet minibar offerings (Vosges chocolate and Vitamin water) but without $15 martinis served by parsimoniously clad models.

Enormous bathrooms and a balcony in each and every room, upper floors even have views, make up for the somewhat smaller, but not uncomfortable, interior space. After your workout in the small but well equipped gym, don't skip the breakfast buffet, replete with Starbucks coffee, Stoneyfield farm yogurt and loads of good pastry.

And you're going to have to ignore the "Six Feet Under" look-alike funeral home across the street and walk up one block to Wilshire and you're in the heart of a happening part of Santa Monica with a Whole Foods to your right and a Gap to your left. Plus the Gaslite bar, also on Wilshire has karaoke nights on the weekend and the club on 20th and Wilshire called 20/20 has 80s night every Friday. Don't ask how we know, we just do.
