The Wilshire Grand Hotel in LA Gets Approval for Trippy Digital Billboards

We seriously hope this hotel is investing in some good black-out shades.

The Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown LA is about to undergo a billion dollar rebuild, financed randomly by Korean Air, and they have just won approval from the city to put trippy digital billboards all over the building.

The LA Times reports:

That district will allow various kinds of digital advertising on the first 10 floors of the two towers. The tops of the two skyscrapers will feature digital signs promoting the buildings' owner and major tenants. And on dozens of stories in between, LED lights would display noncommercial images such as flowers and vines that would fade in and out.

What's the Deal With LA's O Hotel?

When we heard about the O Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, we have to admit our curiosity was piqued by the intriguingly vague name. Turns out “O” is short for Orchid — kind of mundane, if you ask us — but that doesn’t mean the hotel lacks sass. The O is located in the Financial District in a refurbished 1920’s building right in the heart of downtown, and seems to cater mostly to business travelers, offering complimentary WiFi, 24-hour business and fitness centers, personal concierge services, conference rooms and banquet facilities.

The 67 guest rooms come with double or queen beds, flat-screen TV’s, ergonomic chairs, iPod docks and safe boxes. There are in-room spa services to help you unwind after a day of meetings. A night costs between $99 for a Boutique Room (full bed) and $249 for the 500 square-foot Flower Street Suite, which has a separate sitting area, two TV’s, and 3 arched windows overlooking Flower Street.

Korean Air Building a Hotel in Downtown LA

Where: 930 Wilshire Blvd [map], Los Angeles, CA, United States, 90017

Contrary to the prevailing wisdom of the moment, real estate development firm Thomas Property Group, in partnership with Korean Air, has plans to build a new billion-dollar 60-story hotel and condo tower in downtown Los Angeles, where the Wilshire Grand Hotel now stands. The complex would include office space, and an 18,000-square-foot public park.

The building would also be the city’s first new high rise in about 20 years, and Thomas Group Chairman James A. Thomas says that it will satisfy future demand for new office space once Los Angeles bucks the recession. Those Angelenos, always so optimistic.

Wilshire Grand Has Us Seeing Double

When we checked into the Wilshire Grand in Los Angeles last week at 2 a.m. after flying cross-country, we stumbled into the bathroom to brush our teeth, before toppling into bed. The next morning, we woke up to shower, and walked into the bathroom. Slowly, we realized we were standing in a different bathroom. We did a double take, and discovered that the standard-sized room has hotel has two, separate single bathrooms (see open doors on left and right side of the image).
