Hotel Palomar Dallas, once known as one of the Best Boozy Hotel Bars (thanks to the tiki bar downstairs) as well as a much better alternative to the nearby W Hotel and the scene of Nicki Minaj's suitcase meltdown, is no longer a Kimpton Hotel.
As of Wednesday, the property was sold to Thayer Lodging Group who have renamed the hotel The Highland Dallas. The will be managed by Interstate Hotels & Resorts with the intention of having the hotel put into Hilton Hotels new yet very mysterious Curio Collection. According to the Dallas News, the hotel will be the first "selectively hand-picked" Dallas-Forth Worth hotel in the collection. Interestingly, when the building that housed the Hotel Palomar first opened in the 1960s it was known as the Hilton Inn.
Already, the Palomar is gone from the Kimpton website yet we couldn't find a new website for the Highland, except for a mention on Curio. That will probably be forthcoming. In the meantime, you Kimpton Karma kids can stay at the Hotel Lumen near SMU.
Keeping up with the trend is Kimpton's Hotel Palomar Dallas, who just launched a new "Travel Lite" wellness package. Among the offerings are: in-room yoga mats, loanable bikes, and, our favorite: a morning run with the hotel GM, Andrew Wright.
We were curious just what makes Wright such a good running buddy...so, we asked him. Here's what he had to say:

The 42nd president of the United States, George W. Bush is getting his own presidential library at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and the hotels are expecting to fill up because of it. Yes, differing political leanings aside, President Barack Obama and all living presidents will attend the dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum tomorrow though the library officially open to the public the first week of May.
Word on the street is that both the Hotel Palomar and the Hotel Lumen (both Kimpton Hotels), which are within walking distance of the library, are sold out or close to it. And one hotel, The Holiday Inn Dallas, Central-Park Cities recently underwent a $9 million, year-long renovation to spiff up its offerings for the influx of library visitors (estimated to be about 500,000 a year.)
Rapper Barbie Nicki Minaj slayed us last year with her guest rap on the Kanye West song, "Monster" but it looks like she's been battling some of her own demons recently, namely her assistant.
According to the police report, Nicki followed Samuels up to the room they were sharing, to make sure he didn't take any of her stuff. Nicki was in the room looking into her suitcase, which had some of Samuels' belongings, when she says he "grabbed the suitcase and as he was picking it up, he shoved the suitcase across [Nicki's] chin and lower lip."
To celebrate Earth Day, the eco-conscious Hotel Palomar Dallas will try to entice people to reduce their carbon footprint by using public transportation during their hotel stay. If you present the hotel with a DART rail day pass used during your time in Dallas at checkout, you'll receive 25 percent off of your room.
DART, or Dallas Area Rapid Transit, is the public transit authority for Dallas and 12 surrounding cities. It's easy to use DART during your time in the city, since the hotel is across the street from the Mockingbird Station.
After partying at the Greenville Avenue St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 13, you can stumble over to the nearby Hotel Palomar Dallas for more Irish-themed shenanigans.
The hotel's restaurant, Central 214, will go green for St. Paddy's Day. Everything from the water flowing out the fountains to the beer will be green. Central 214 will also keep the party going on its patio, where you can munch on brats, hot dogs, chicken and beef while listening to Irish music.
Planning to whoop it up in Dallas this New Year's Eve? If you get a little sloppy—or lucky—before the clock strikes twelve, the Hotel Palomar will be your Prince Charming and grant you a room for 50 percent off. If you and your pumpkin-coach arrive at check-in after 11 p.m.
The deal is available now through December 31, but of course, there is limited availability on New Year's Eve. The Cinderella rate is offered for same-day reservations only, and you need to use CIN as your rate code when booking online or over the phone. (So plug the hotel's number into your cell now, and get ready to call on the 31st). The deal will bring rates down as low as $99. Regular rates still available for New Year's Eve start at $189 a night.
Look, we can’t help it. We’re suckers for a pet concierge. And this one takes the cake. At just 4 months old, Labrador Retriever Kora is the youngest Director of Pet Relations so far for Kimpton. She started her job at Hotel Palomar Dallas last night, at the property’s Howl-O-Ween Spooktacular party benefiting no-kill animal shelter Operation Kindness.
Yo, dude: remember the Hacky Sack? Best known (to some generations, at least) as the trademark accessory and sport of choice by 90's high-schoolers who stuck to steady diets of organic popcorn and weed, the Hacky Sack is -- it seems -- poised to make a comeback.
Yeah, we find this curiously random, too, but: Kimpton is bringing the Hacky back. In Dallas, Texas, no less.
If you judge your hotel by its TripAdvisor rankings, then the best place to stay in Dallas, Texas is the Palomar Hotel from the Kimpton Hotel group. It's a boutique hotel plus residences that was formerly the Mockingbird Hilton, and we've already drawn parallels between the Palomar and the W Dallas.
Some of the pluses, as told by recent guests to the Palomar, include wine tasting with other guests, great staff, huge televisions and even a quick response time if you need a razor to shave your legs! They're also welcoming to your pets.
Yet since some of the guest reviews also likened the Palomar to a W property, we were surprised to find the W Dallas listed all the way down at #49 on the TripAdvisor rankings. Some of the problems here were guests didn't like the bathroom being so closely combined into the bedroom, below-average service for an above-average price, and a location that's not entirely convenient. Seems like the Palomar is out-W-ing the W!

On Monday, Dallas got another new boutique property when the Hotel Palomar Dallas opened in the Park Cities neighborhood.
This Kimpton joint (formerly the Mockingbird Hilton) is the chain's first foray into Texas and much like the W Dallas, the hotel features both rooms and residences along with a full-service spa and a swank restaurant, Central 214. Additionally, the hotel has decorated the place with Texans in mind:
As guests arrive, the style of our Dallas boutique hotel is readily apparent. Passing through the entry, guests gaze upward, taking in the 26-foot windows encasing the first floor. Hotel Palomar's open and airy lobby living room evokes the mood of a classic Texan landscape, boasting two-story ceilings, large wood floor panels underfoot and the grand fireplace, a Kimpton signature, as the room's focal point.
Kimpton also seems to think Dallas is full of horny people. We particularly love the photo above, found on the hotel site, which shows a pair of men's cowboy boots on the floor next to a pair of jeans with a big belt. The "lady" apparently stripped off her red dress and heels. That's so Dallas!
The residences are set to open in November but this weekend, if you find yourself bored in Dallas, check out the place for $249 a night. Oddly, the hotel is not offering any special introductory rates. Even Ian Schrager did this!
But it looks like the hotel's pay-for-WiFi trend is just for NYC, as this hotel offers the service for free for guests along with their standard evening wine tasting.
