For What You Get, Mama Shelter is Kind of an Expensive Broad
Every so often we feature a hotel review from one of our readers that we feel should be shared with the rest of you dear hotel guests. We got a reader review in today (well, more like a reader Skype call — how Oprah of us!) from a recent guest at Paris' new hip, hot mom on the block, Mama Shelter.
Touted as a super high-tech, modern-but-affordable option in the City of Light, our reader enjoyed his experience at the hotel overall — but had a few tips and cautionary points to throw in (as told to us):
· Those iMacs in the rooms? Yeah, to get the keyboard to actually use them as a computer, you have to pay a pretty hefty deposit down at the front desk — kind of a hassle.
· Though the decor of the room is pretty cool-looking, the paint looks sort of cheap — almost as though the black walls were painted with chalkboard paint and then the whole write-on-the-walls idea was abandoned somewhere along the way.
· In the small room with black walls, the light was kind of poopy and dark — bummer.
· Beware of the location: it's pretty far from the center of the city and all the biggest attractions — not particularly difficult to get to, just not centrally located. The metro lines are a pretty significant walk from the hotel, too.

Like Mama's Milk, Eating at Mama Shelter
To say that Mama Shelter—the new Philippe Starck-designed boutique hotel in Paris’s 20th arrondisement—has a restaurant is misleading. Rather, it has a restaurant, bar, parlor, outdoor smoking lounge, foosball arena, iMac photo booth, and breakfast nook. During our recent stay there, we managed to nosh our way through most of them and here’s our candid cut on the cuisine, the culture, and the cutlery.

Mama Shelter is the New 'Hot Mom' in the Neighborhood
We happened to check into Mama Shelter on a recent Saturday night in Paris, and though we’ll admit to harboring a few preconceived notions about what to expect thanks to the gaggle of recent reviews, we kept an open mind. During our stay at the Philippe Starck-designed property in the far reaches of the 20th arrondisement, we did everything from mussing the bed and overloading the in-room iMac to testing the relative speed of the two elevators in order to bring you a full review of Paris’s most happening hostellerie.

Mama Shelter is a Tease
Mama Shelter is the most talked-about new hotel in Paris lately, and it’s no wonder, thanks to funding from the kids of the folks who started Club Med, and some ingenious design elements courtesy of Philippe Starck.
We just happened to be in Paris last weekend and spent a night at this new hotspot to get the real scoop on the square footage, those wacky bedside lamps, the social photo booth, and to learn just how far the hotel is exactly from the nearest Metro stop. Answer: far, very far.

The New York Times Finally Visits Mama Shelter in Paris
Fast becoming the most talked about new hotel in the City of Lights, Mama Shelter is a Philippe Starck-designed budget boutique option in an out-of-the-way (some might say “dodgy”) corner of Paris that seems to be drawing international hipsters (and New York Times journalists) to its chic bar and simple rooms. That’s thanks, in no small part, to the starting rate of 79 euros a night—a rarity in one of the world’s most expensive cities.
So buzzworthy was this budget boutique hotel becoming that the New York Times sent travel writer Fred Bernstein to stay there and enlighten us all with his review. We've been dying to hear what the critics say about Mama Shelter since November and Bernstein gives it a thorough review.

Mama Shelter is the Mother of All Geek Hotels
Paris' newest Philippe Starck-designed hotel, Mama Shelter, may just be the mother of all geek hotels (get it? Mama? Mother? Har har).
No, but really: the new hotel, located in the Saint Blaise quartier (which is the 20th arrondissement and on the edge of Paris), has 174 "digital" guest rooms that sort of give us of a trippy NYLO-meets-geek-chic vibe — with a techie twist.
French company DirectStreams has outfitted every guest room with an iMac — which, in itself, is nothing particularly groundbreaking given the number of hotels that are throwing iMacs into guestrooms nowadays — but Mama Shelter's actually act as comprehensive multimedia centers: a single terminal that offers every in-room digital service you're gonna need (HDTV, music, radio, CD, films, DVDs, Internet, etc.)
