Gone are the days when boutique hotels were all velvet ropes and martini bars. Indeed, Chicago's elegant Hotel Burnham just opened a new fitness center for Kimpton hotel guests looking for a little treadmill action with their happy hour.

Following a six-month renovation of a former office space on the hotel's third floor, the work-out center is open 24 hours a day and features treadmills and an elliptical machine (equipped with luxe LCD TV screens), a stationary bike, adjustable incline bench, free weights, medicine balls, and an abs machine. The space apparently "allows for natural light with a glass door and glass wall," though frankly we're personally never thrilled about the combo of glass walls and fitness centers (all those leering eyes!).

Now, with just a few machines, it's hardly a Gold's Gym, but the extra amenity is certainly nice. Plus, the Hotel Burnham is a classic historical Chicago hotel, and we always appreciate an upgrade. Now if we could just find the motivation to work out while we're not traveling, we're sure we'd totally hit up a hotel gym like this one.

We now present you with our VIP Hotel Reviewer Series in which we hand-pick experts in the travel and media worlds and beyond to tell us what are their favorite hotels and why. Once a week, we'll feature a hotel review from said VIPs about their favorite leisure or business hotels. Pay attention: These VIPs are experts at what they do and they don't mess around when it comes to their hotels.

Our next VIP reviewer is Jenny Block, is a prolific writer on arts and culture for a wide variety of regional and national publications. She has also just written a book titled, “Open: Love, Sex, and Life in an Open Marriage.” Here she tells us about a recent trip to Chi-town. Enjoy.

When my girlfriend asked me to join her on a business trip to Chicago, Illinois, I simply couldn't resist, especially when she told me we'd be staying at the Hotel Burnham. It's a Kimpton property, which is a boutique hotel group that I adore. They are always just the right mix of hip and comfortable and Hotel Burnham was no different.

This months Business 2.0 lists five US hotels with "true suites", that is with separate working and sleeping spaces.

The mag was obviously looking for hotels that would allow you to work, and stretch out your arms at the same time, needless to say the Hudson didn't make the list.

One hotel that did make it was Hotel Burnham in Chicago.  Burnham boasts a loop location, free WiFi, and free happy hour, however, the rooms are known for their cramped spaces, so how did the Burnham make the list?

Business 2.0 suggests upgrading to a suite, which will run you $50 more a night, or $30 a night, if your company has negotiated rates.

Looks like you could end up with a suite on the Loop for less than $200, not too shabby.

The rest of the list after the jump...
