Another week, another historic hotel revamp is nearly completed. This time it’s the turn of the Pera Palace in Istanbul, which is entering its last month of building works – it’s down to open 1 September. Just in time, too, seeing as we’re now more than halfway through Istanbul’s stint as European Capital of Culture.

The restoration has taken two years and €20m, and as well as a spruce up for the whole property, they’ve updated it with a spa. And although wishy washy hotel spas weren’t around when the Pera Palace originally opened in 1892, they’ve kept things traditional with a Turkish hammam, steam bath, sauna and Jacuzzi, as well as a modern gym.

Istanbul's Answer To The Hudson

Last fall, before the Marmara Perea opened in Istanbul near the Taksim/Beyoglu area, Wallpaper* Navigator called the property "Istanbul's answer to the Hudson."

In actuality, if early reports are to be believed, we would add that MP Istanbul has a leg up on the Hudson--service with a smile!

According to a recent guest:

I was a solo traveller and the staff went out of their way to welcome me. The room service was prompt and courteous. Really, I found it difficult to fault the place, and when I go back to Istanbul the MP is where I'll be staying.

So it looks like if you want a funky, sleek design hotel with a killer lobby and great service you will have to hop a plane to Istanbul.

Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople.
