Sleep With The Fishes at The Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel

We’ve already talked about how the old Yankee Clipper Beach Resort has had a makeover to become the fresh-faced Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel, but today we’re taking a closer look at one of our favorite topics: Hotel Carpets. See how modern and geometric and nautical this carpet in the Sheraton’s Beach Tower hallway is?

The Ocean View's the Same but the Old Yankee Clipper Has Had a Makeover

Was it the palm trees or the volleyball nets that gave away yesterday's Guess The Hotel? HotelChatter member onezendog was right—we're at the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel, or the hotel formerly known as the Yankee Clipper.
The hotel reopened in January and certainly does have that recently renovated feel about it. The lobby and public spaces all look fresh and modern, but if you look closely you still see hints of the past peeking through. Being such an old building, this means old-style floor plans and unattractive ceilings glammed up with new carpeting, paint, furniture, bedding, and flatscreen TVs.
There are new elevators, too, but that doesn't necessarily mean better: Ours got stuck and after a bit of a wait we had to half climb out of it back onto our floor.

Fire at Marriott Harbor Beach in Ft. Lauderdale Forces Out 250 Guests
Ah, imagine waking up on your semi-late Spring Break vacay in Ft. Lauderdale to fire alarms. Annoying. Except imagine there was a real fire in your hotel. Scary.
According to the Miami Herald, 250 guests were evacuated this morning after a fire broke out at the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort in Ft. Lauderdale:
Calls about the fire at 3030 Holiday Dr. came in just before 4:30 a.m., spokesman Matt Little said. The hotel's sprinkler system controlled the fire, but 250 people were evacuated from the hotel as a precaution, Little said.
Six rooms sustained damage as a result of the fire. Investigators are looking into what caused the blaze.
Thankfully, nobody was hurt. But a morning fire? What a bummer. And on top of that, unfortunately, forgetting about this morning might not be so easy for guests: the martinis there are no longer $5.

$5 Recession Martinis at the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort
It turns out the holiday season is not the only cover-up for drinking ourselves into oblivion--the recession is another great excuse to defend your penchant for drinking a little more than usual.
Americans are cutting back their spending on seemingly everything but the mortgage and the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale has recognized that by offering their Down(turn) & Dirty Martini for only $5. The drink usually costs $11.
Designed for those who don’t want to forgo their evening cocktail ritual, the budget-friendly special allows guests and the local community to mix and mingle while adhering to their budgets. Available at the hotel’s Riva restaurant and poolside Cascades bar, the Down(turn) & Dirty Martini is available now through March 31, 2009.
We love it. You don't even have to be a guest to partake in this recession cocktail. But if you did want to get a room that night (who knows how many martinis you will imbibe?), rates start at around $289 a night.
