The last time we’d talked about the Mayfair Hotel & Spa in Miami’s Coconut Grove section, things weren’t faring well. To be blunt—it was becoming a downright dump. In fact a friend who stayed there this past April told us that the previously named Mayfair House Hotel still hadn’t looked that great.

Well, it seems things have changed and the hotel has undergone a major renovation and will relaunch as a luxury property on September 21st. And if the images we’ve seen are any indication—they’ve put in major work.

The 179 suites, spa, and rooftop deck have all been overhauled to a South Beach sleekness that has us well intrigued. They’ve added Amazon ironwood fixtures, stained-glass windows, and sculptures plaster ceilings crafted by talented artisans.

Five Hotels in Miami Under $300 for President's Week

February 3, 2009 at 2:03 PM | by | ()

Hotels probably consider February one of the most wonderful times of the year, even in a rough economy like this. Aside from lovers taking Valentine's Day getaways, hotels have the opportunity to capitalize on families with children who have the week off in the middle of the month known as President's Week which celebrates the birthdays of U.S. presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. (You know, we almost forgot about this significance since for so long it's usually meant "vacation" for us.)

This year, President's Week starts on February 16 and lasts through the 20th. We decided to look at the rates in Miami for those dates. Why Miami? Because it's easy to get to and because it's warm, especially for the folks in the Northeast and Midwest. Also, there's a ton of hotels here so you can always find you what you're looking for. While there could possibly some of you out there who want to spend $900+ a night at The Raleigh Hotel (yes, that's the current going rate), we're going to keep these picks under $300 for you.

After the jump we rounded up the Five Hotels in Miami for President's Week.

Michelle Rodriguez Has a Dirty Girlfight at the Mayfair

Recent reports that Coconut Grove's Mayfair Hotel was getting "dirtier and dirtier by the day" had us confused: what was the deal here?

We were diggin' it back when Kimpton managed the hotel, but the gross reviews on TripAdvisor and mysterious construction noises made us worry a little -- not to mention our confusion upon hearing from Kimpton that the upcoming Epic Hotel was going to be their first Florida property (were they ashamed? Or did they just mean it was the first Florida property Kimpton owned?)

Well, Michelle Rodriguez -- the arrest-prone star of Lost and Girlfight -- confirmed that things were a little bit dirty. In the sexual sense, at least.

Is Miami's Mayfair Hotel & Spa a Mess or Is This All a Big Mistake?

The Leading Hotels of the World may want to create a subdivision called The Crappiest Hotels of the World--that is if the consortium continues to allow Miami's Mayfair Hotel & Spa in Coconut Grove to be counted among its ranks.

Upon our first visit in 2006, back when the hotel was a Kimpton property, we liked it, given its chic design, in-room 42" plasma flat screen TVs, marble baths and 4,500-square-foot spa. At the time, the only downside was that the rooftop pool had not yet opened.

But recent guest complaints--of which there are a lot--say the hotel "gets dirtier and dirtier by the day," "is not worth the price," gives "sinus infections" and that staff "have no taste," recommending Hooters and The Cheesecake Factory as good lunch options. Other guests complain that current construction produces unbearable noise, through curiously, there is no mention of upgrades on the Mayfair's web site. In fact, the only press info we could find was a glowing review of the hotel from 2005....

So we turn it over to you, dear readers, to help us sort through this mess: Is this hotel crap or are these reviews simply daft? Tell us what you think in comments below.

Jock Jam Hotels: Ritz Carlton Miami

While the Nuggets and Clippers were going head to head on the West Coast, the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat were facing off in Florida.

The Bulls were all set to stay at the Four Seasons but at the last minute had to switch because the hotel could not accomodate them.

Instead, the Bulls ended up at the Ritz-Carlton. "Let's be honest," the team's assistant coach said. "The Ritz-Carlton isn't too difficult to take."

We are assuming that the bball players were situated in a room nicer than the one a recent guest had:

Room that was ready was filthy: empty water bottles under one bed, dirty scissors under the other bed (my kids room!), in bathroom loofa package had been invaded by a roach. We opened minibar and were greeted by a foul stench, and found leftovers from The Cheescake factory.

Nice rooms or not, the Bulls have lost two in a row to the Heat. Maybe the Ritz is to blame.

Kimpton's Mayfair Open, Sort Of

Kimpton's newest property, the renovated Mayfair Hotel & Spa in Coconut Grove, FL, is open and taking reservations on all rooms, save the presidential suite.  The introductory rate claims to start at $139, however our search (for rooms in November) revealed no rates below the $200 level.

That is the good news.

The bad news?

The front desk, spa, restaurant, and highly anticipated 85-foot rooftop swimming pool are still not done, and the hotel is in the midst of trying to get these amenities finished while they are open.

You know what that means...construction run amuck, however, this property has been under construction whilst open for some time, so they should be getting the hang of balancing guests and renovations. Furthermore, at this point at least the rooms are done (rooms should have DVD, flat screen tvs, and free Internet access).

However, for a property that was suppose to open back in May of 2005, finishing up early in 2006 seems a tad drawn out and behind schedule, does it not?

In any event, now you know what to expect if you book during the ongoing construction.

Kimpton is in the midst of completing a ten million dollar renovation to the Mayfair House Hotel in Coconut Grove, FL, and when they are done, Kimpton will have its first South Florida hotel.

The re-launched property will be called the Mayfair Hotel & Spa, and it is scheduled to be completely in early 2005.  The highlights?  First there is going to be a rooftop deck, complete with pool, private cabanas, and plasma screen televisions.  Additionally, 42-inch plasma televisions will be added to every room.

The hotel is about 15 minutes from South Beach, so you won't be right on top of the action, which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what you are heading to Southern Florida for.

We will check this hotel out once it opens.  For now, feast your eyes on the model room photos, and artist rendered drawings.

Also check out the old Mayfair House Hotel site to get an idea of location.
