Who Will Now Be Setting The Tempo in Miami?
UPDATE: Confirmed: Richfield Hospitality will be running the Tempo Miami.
Yesterday we reported on how Rock Resorts dropped the Tempo Miami from their roster of hotels. Supposedly the split from the hotel owners was "amicable" which is always good news to hear. Yet our minds were already turned to the new management company that would be setting up shop in the hotel.
We asked and we received. A tipster let us know that Richfield Hospitality will now be setting the tempo for Tempo Miami. This is the same management company that's in place at The Joule in Dallas and the St. Regis Deer Crest in Park City as well as a few other full service and select service hotels (Hiltons, Four Points, etc.)
Like any good management company, Richfield promises "revenue-generating hotel operations" which is probably what the owners of Tempo Miami are looking for...quick.

RockResorts Says Tempo Miami Is Not the Right Tempo For Them

Looks like what's happening with the Edition Waikiki has spurred a sort of mini-trend...at least in Miami.
Just a week after Fairmont Turnberry Isle was let go from their management contract by the hotel's owners, the Rock Resorts brand has decided that, after just a little over a year open, they no longer want to run the Tempo Miami. The company has even put out a press release saying so:
Vail Resorts, Inc. (NYSE: MTN) announced today that as of September 15 its subsidiary RockResorts will no longer manage Tempo Miami as part of its luxury hotel brand.
Ownership and RockResorts have mutually agreed that ownership's direction for the Tempo Miami hotel does not fit with the RockResort brand or its direction, and therefore the parties have agreed to amicably terminate their relationship.

Tempo Miami is Still in Soft-Opening Mode But Only Until June

The last we heard about the Tempo Miami Hotel, a Rock Resort, the hotel would not be officially opening until the fall, although it was soft-opened for guests in the meantime. But apparently, the official opening has been moved up to June.
We found rooms for this weekend going for $223 a night at the downtown Miami hotel but we also noticed this little note remained on the hotel's booking page:
Tempo Miami, is scheduled for a full RockResorts opening in June 2010. Prior to this date, the resort will be open, but only offering limited amenities. These will include: all room accommodations, complimentary continental breakfast, 14th floor sky pool deck, full lobby bar and concierge services.
Once the hotel officially opens it will include a full service RockResorts spa and a restaurant that will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. We're not so sure if room rates will continue to increase as the hotel unveils more of its offerings (in March you could get rooms for $179) but it is off-season in Miami now and this hotel is downtown, not on the beach. Let's hope it stays under $250.

Miami Marriott Evacuated After Crane Accident
The Marriott Biscayne Bay in downtown has been evacuated after a crane accident injured a construction worker yesterday.
The AP reports:
Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll says the arm extending from the crane became loose, but did not collapse or fall. A worker who was midway up the 212-foot crane was hospitalized with a broken arm. It was not clear how the worker was hurt.
The hotel was evacuated as a precaution. The Marriott is a tall high-rise building and is connected to the to Omni Mall by skywalk. Recent reviews called the hotel dated causing us to think maybe the construction work was for hotel renovations. Yet the Miami Fire rescue says the construction work was possible being done on a pier.

Super Bowl Hotel Rooms for $90 a Night
Know somewhere with open hotel rooms for Super Bowl weekend in Miami? Tip us off.
We got a tip yesterday after we posted our early report on the Super Bowl hotel rooms in Miami about an extremely affordable hotel offering rooms for $90 a night.
The Miami Sun Hotel located on NE 1st Avenue is near the American Airlines arena which isn't South Beach but it's close. The web site has hardly any pictures of the hotel or the rooms so we're not sure what this place is really like.
We also couldn't find any reviews or listing of this place on TripAdvisor but we did see some reviews on Travelpost:
The hotel was in the middle of downtown Miami and it was close to the buildings that I needed to do business in. America Airlines Arena was only 2 blocks away, so I caught a Heat game while I was there without having to fight traffic. The place isn't the Hyatt, but it was clean and at 50 bucks a night, I really can't complain. Overall, not bad.
Another reviewer said that the place was good if you needed to be near the arena and didn't need to stay a long time. On Yahoo the reviews were a little more mixed ranging from "good friendly staff" to "filthy".
Should you be desperate for a hotel room in Miami under $100 for Super Bowl weekend, you can take a chance on this place by calling 305-375-0786 for reservations.
