Eurail Hotel Stop: Brilliant Budget in Venice

Eurail journeys to Venice often end at the main Santa Lucia train station which is why we're offering the cheap-but-cheerful Hotel Santa Lucia as a good stop for budget travelers in this otherwise expensive city.

The Santa Lucia is just a few minutes' walk from the train station; the hotel website says three minutes, to be precise, and recent guests agree the location is ideal.

It's advertised as a one-star hotel which sounds rather low, but it seems to have everything you need and has the big advantage of not breaking the bank in Venice, where accommodation prices can be astronomical--not easy to run a business when you have to carry everything around on boats. You can choose from rooms with a bathroom or to share one with other guests, and prices with a bathroom for a double range from €70 (US$100) to €110 (around $150), which is really reasonable for Venice.

If you're planning your trip for winter, however, be aware that the Hotel Santa Lucia staff are taking their own holiday then: the hotel will be closed from November 25 through to January 25, 2008. But since the best time to see Venice is in the spring or the fall, this shouldn't be too much of a drama.

Man, the couple that nominated Hotel Continental Venice as one of the worst hotels in the world yesterday is pissed.

Last night we got Joshua's scathing hotel review (which was a lot like the one from childersjk we published yesterday, complete with photos, and a link to his blog.)

His blog highlights pejorative Hotel Continental Venice commentary he has sent to hotel review sites all over the web. This isn't index spam folks, this is a recent guest who had a terrible experience at a hotel and wants to share it with the world.

Sure you can argue whether or not this hotel is that bad. We have definitely heard worse stories. However, what you can't argue with is the power that guests now have.

Hoteliers take note. You can no longer afford to have your guests leaving your property unhappy. It is just too risky for your business in this day and age.

[Publisher's Note: As longtime readers know, we have tracked the "Worst Hotel In Amercia" for quite a while, but now Hotel Maven childersjk has upped the stakes--by a full order of magnitude. childersjk claims to have found a worthy nominee for the dubious title of "Worst Hotel In The World". To the surprise of no one, the nominated hotel is in Italy. We figured, what the hell, the Guardian says we have "a sideline in naming and shaming bad Italian accommodation," so we will go with it. If you have another contender for any of the "Worst Hotel" monikers, send it our way, or better yet, become a Hotel Maven and submit your own hotel story for potential publication. Remember, the below hotel review is just one, very spirited, opinion. Enjoy.]

My husband and I recently celebrated our 10th Anniversary with a Trafalgar Tour through Northern Italy. Rome was amazing; Florence was fantastic; Venice left a lot to be desired. This was due in large part to the extremely rude staff at the Hotel Continental on the Grande Canal.
