Shanghai's legendary Fairmont Peace Hotel just got even more, wait for it...legendary with the recent unveiling of their Nine Nations Suites and Sassoon Presidential Suite.

The Nine Nations suites were actually a part of the hotel when it first opened back in 1929 as The Cathay Hotel and they paid homage to the "cultural and stylistic influences" of both East and West on Shanghai life.

Now the suites are open again as the final pieces in the hotel's extensive three-year renovation. The Chinese, Indian, English and American suites have been preserved, while the French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and German suites were redesigned but in line with their original concept.

And we've got glorious photos of all the East and West suites as well as the Sassoon Presidential Suite which features 360-degree views of the city from its perch on the hotel's 10th floor. (It's named after the hotel's founder Sir Victor Sassoon who once lived in the suite.) Check 'em out below!

Practically the first thing we do when entering a hotel room is check out of all the in-room amenities from the toiletries to the gadgets to the all-important mini-bar. Our philosophy when it comes to amenities is simple--the more the better!

But we have to say, this amenity found in the rooms at the just reopened Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai is quite interesting.

Travel publicist Geoffrey Weill snapped this shot of a gas mask found in the closet. He writes:

I had visions of World War II attacks or worse. I bravely pulled the golden cord and opened it to discover an anti-smoke mask to use in case of a hotel fire. Phew. But then why doesn’t EVERY hotel have them?"

At least the floors in the lobby are uncarpeted

Did you send them your stolen stuff? Fairmont’s Peace Hotel in Shanghai reopens (or reopened, seeing as they’re ahead of us) today, complete with its museum of hotel memorabilia compiled from offerings from the light-fingered likes of you.

The hotel is throwing around words like “grandeur”, “majesty” and “glamorous” to describe the refit, so as you can imagine, this is not going to be your greige boutique hotel. A copper roof, marble floors and Lalique glass around the place is more appropriate.

The 270 rooms will feature “1930s flourishes” but happily 21st century amenities – LCD TVs in the bath, WiFi and Illy espresso machines. They’re sticking traditional with the toiletries, though, and going with Miller Harris.

When we first heard about Waldorf Astoria coming to Shanghai, we were irrationally excited, and now we've seen renderings like this one of a Waldorf Astoria Club Suite, we're going to call our excitement perfectly rational. The icing on the cake? The Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund is now taking reservations for September 15 and beyond.

This is the first Waldorf Astoria Hotel for China, and the hotel is opening in two stages. The Waldorf Astoria Club building is the one opening first, in the building that used to house The Shanghai Club.

Much as we love our trendy Ws and Andazes, we at HotelChatter have a fond thing for old school hotels. Grand Dames, as long as they’re done well, can be spectacular.

So we’re following the progress of the revamp of Fairmont’s Peace Hotel in Shanghai. It’s now nearing the end of a three year restoration, and to get it ready for its reopening, they’re having a shout out for “memories and memorabilia” from the hotel (which opened in 1929).

The ninth addition to the posh Peninsula collection of hotels, The Peninsula Shanghai, opens on . The first structure to be built on the historic Bund in Shanghai in 60 years, the 235 guestroom (plus 44 suites) hotel is causing a lot of buzz.

The location is out of this world – on the banks of the Huangpu River and conveniently located near the shopping capital of Nanjing Road. But it’s the super huge rooms – larger standard rooms than any other major hotel chain in Shanghai – that have set size queen’s tongues wagging.

Famous Hotel Gets Tagged

Damn those romantic movies! Not only do they make you cry and wonder what is a life worth living without love but they are also responsible for ruining the facade of a famous Shanghai hotel.

Ok, it was just indirectly but still. The historic Bund waterfront Peace Hotel, where Noel Coward wrote "Private Lives," (about ex-husbands and ex-wives) got tagged with red Chinese characters by a crew filming a romantic movie.

The crew painted the characters on to window panes on the hotel's 1929-built north building on Monday night, apparently unaware they were breaking the law, the Shanghai Daily said.

"We have done a lot to protect the environment and architecture," the paper quoted production manager Xu Wen as saying. "If it is still not enough, we say sorry."

The hotel is more than 100 years old and back in its 1930s heyday was frequented by Charlie Chaplin and George Bernard Shaw.

Because the hotel is so old it's protected by a law that declares it a cultural relic from the colonial days when the local was known as the "Pearl of the East" and "Whore of the Orient" for its racy nightlife.
