We're coming to expect good things from the Pod Hotels restaurants. After April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman (of The Breslin and The John Dory Oyster Bar at the Ace Hotel New York) opened Salvation Taco at Pod 39, the bar was raised. We wondered what dining concept the original Pod Hotel on 51st Street would come up with to match. We liked the cafe just fine but wanted something more.
The answer is the soon-to-open Pop @ Pod a new craft beer gastropub off the hotel's lobby that shared an aesthetic with the original Pop Burger in the Meatpacking District.
Leona Helmsley had a reputation for mean-spiritedness, and was famously known as the "Queen of Mean," but there was something sweet about the tyrannical hotelier -- a small, white, fluffy Maltese named Trouble, who, herself, was a very rich lady.
Helmsley, who was the original owner of the 909-room The New York Palace, demanded that Trouble be called "the princess," never "the dog," and bequeathed the pampered pup a $12 million dollar trust fund when she died in 2007. The New York Palace, as part of the luxury hotel's $140 million renovation, has just opened a new bar named Trouble's Trust in honor of the pooch.

While anxiously awaiting the opening of Sam Nazarian's new SLS New York (coming
mid-2013 2014) we decided to take a quick peek at the site at 444 Park Avenue South.
The Philippe Starck-designed 190-room hotel claims to be "bringing new restaurant and nightlife concepts and an exclusive rooftop experience to bring something truly dynamic, vibrant and timeless to the community." Of course, it's difficult to discern much under all that scaffolding, but it does look like something interesting is going on up on the roof.
Over the past spring and summer, the five-star New York Palace has been having a little work done.
The $120 million renovation, guided by San Francisco-based design firm BAMO, includes refurbished Tower rooms and suites on the 41st floor and above; an overhaul of the former Le Cirque restaurant (set to be a new venture from chef Michel Richard), and an increase in the number of rooms from 899 to 909. Work is still ongoing (and is being completed stage by stage so as not to cause too much disruption) but the hotel, no longer a part of the Dorchester Collection, has unveiled its brand new lobby space, which had been closed since June.
Yet another New York City hotel has gotten an upgrade.
With the unveiling of the hotel's 209 Lauren Rottet- (of Rottet Studios) designed guest rooms and suites, The Benjamin's three-year, $10 million renovation is just about complete -- and we got a chance to peek at the changes.
The rooms' redesign is the final part of a project that also included the renovation of the second floor meeting rooms and guest lounge, the opening of Geoffery Zakarian's The National restaurant, and a lobby redesign. Still in the works are a fitness center renovation set for fall (in a partnership with an, as yet, unannounced company), and a 22nd-floor one-bedroom Premier Suite that will be unveiled in early 2014.

We can't help but notice lately the growing number of fancy remotes cropping up in rooms at luxury properties all over the place — and we like it.
On a recent visit over to The New York Palace we discovered another fun little gadget from Crestron that controlled our room's expanse of black out curtains and roman shades with a button tap and set the mood with lighting options like relax and evening (which is just fancy talk to for off and dimmed). This particular one was even kind enough to let us know when someone was at the door (see above). Pretty neat, although an added built-in camera would've impressed the hell out of us.
Only thing is, we couldn't quite how to figure out how it all worked, despite the little pamphlet that came with it. The media button didn't seem to control any kind of media and it certainly wasn't the iPod docking station we thought it was. Yet the volume setting makes us think perhaps we're just not hip enough to understand such high-tech equipment as it's obviously meant to pump up the volume on something. But we're going to keep trying, because it's just so darn fun to press buttons and see what they do.
Styling and profiling on a custom 2013 Bentley Mulsanne is none other than tennis queen herself, Serena Williams! The sports' wildchild was a recent guest at the St. Regis New York and she showed just how to transition from demon on the court to a beautiful coquette.
Ms. Williams was in town for an exhibition match at Madison Square Garden, and after she defeated rival Victoria Azarenka, headed back to the swank hotel. There in the Astor Suite, she changed from her notoriously stylish tennis gear into a glam Alexander McQueen frock for some poses on hotel's luxe auto. Though we are *not loving the hair. WUWT?
This isn't Serena's first stay at the St. Regis, and some say she thinks the Astor Suite gives her good luck. Hey, who are we to argue superstition with a gal who looks like that?
Serena will return to hotel this August for the US Open.
Should you wish to stay in that one-bedroom suite before then, rates in April begin at $1,250 per night. Or you can just be happy to book a superior room--which is nothing to sneeze at with its included butler service—for a mere $795.

Now that Cinderella, Prince Charming, and a 1,500-lb dog have all graced the New York Palace with their presence, the midtown luxury hotel will tend to a little housekeeping. And by little, we mean a royal $120 million renovation.
Set to be completed in June, the first phase has kicked off in the top 14 floors, also known as The Towers. It's where, if you can afford it, the name of the hotel begins to make sense with its 176 residential-style accommodations and skyline views.
So, yada yada, another hotel renovation... why do we care? Well, we feel that renovations give a glimpse into changing (or not changing) hotel trends, and for this one in particular, we're looking outside the box at two things: The death of the light switch and the end of the overpriced, in-room movie.
It seems this whole Crestron control unit thing a ding we told you about is catching on with hotels across the country, meaning less wandering around the room looking for the appropriate switch. In addition, the rooms at The Towers will all be equipped with television systems that can sync with computers and personal Netflix accounts. We're sure we've said it somewhere before, but let us once again wave adios to the ten-dollar in-room movie rental(that we fall asleep halfway through). Good riddance, and let's keep this trend rolling, please.
Looks like we’re in the midst of another specialty holiday time, this time it’s called >National Sleep Awareness Week, which runs through March 10th. This is in conjunction with the return to Daylight Savings Time, when clocks move ahead and hour and most people lose an hour of sleep (but gain an hour of sunlight!).
Still, many people have trouble adjusting, especially those who travel a good deal. So, if you happen to have business in NYC, it might be worth it to stay at The Benjamin. Not only is this the place with a dedicated Sleep Concierge, but now they’ve instituted a “Work-Down Call”. The only way to describe it is that’s it’s the reverse of a wake-up call, they actually give you a ring and tell you when it’s time to call it a night.
That’s right, they know you’re still up in your room alone sending just one last email, making one more call, or, or…and the next thing you know it’s the wee hours and you've got to be up soon, walking into a meeting bleary eyed, despite sleeping on a cushy bed with 500-thread count sheets!
According to a New York Times story, NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne said last weekend two dapper dons (one sported a trench coat) walked into the hotel's lobby at 2 a.m. and while one distracted a member of the staff, the other took a sledgehammer and smashed a jewelry display case. He grabbed $167,000 million worth of goods, from watches to chains, all from Jacob & Company, aka "Jacob The Jeweler" as Mr. Arabo is known in the hip-hop community. Initial reports from the New York Post stated the value of the stolen goods was close to $2 million. When interviewed, Mr. Arabo, who has spent some time himself on the other side of the law, wondered why his jewelry was targeted with this statement
"This is small-time, running into a hotel, smashing things with a hammer. Unfortunately, it happened to me. How come it was my window, when there were other windows with jewelry in the hotel?”Jacob thinks he's special, obvi, but then he must have contemplated it more and answered his own question with this lightbulb thought: “I think they would recognize my name more than anyone else’s, from the magazines,” he said. Indeed, Jacob has been mentioned in many songs from Notorious B.I.G. to Kanye West to 50 Cent. The beloved provider of all things ice, whether tasteful or OTT is now considering putting future jewelry displays behind bulletproof glass, though we're not sure that will help with, you know, sledgehammers.

It's truethere are quite a few hotels around the world with the word "Palace" in their names. It's at the New York Palace Hotel, however, that you actually find a prince and princess. Cinderella and Prince Charming showed up to the hotel's Madison Avenue courtyard yesterday evening to kick off the holiday season, light the Christmas tree, promote the upcoming Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella Broadway musical, and hint that they'll be dropping back in every so often during brunch at the hotel.
Stopping into the couryard to view the tree is free, of course, but to try a little of Cinderella's NYC lifestyle you'll have to pay. The season brings not only a special weekend brunch, but also a Cinderella-themed room package.
