Movie About A Sex Addict Shot Multiple Scenes in (Duh) The Standard Hotel

Michael Fassbender could have just been going along with the Standard New York's exhibitionist trend when witnesses caught him in the act inside one of the hotel's see-through rooms. But as it turns, out, Fassbender was just filming one of the scenes for Shame, a new movie directed by Steve McQueen that follows the life of a sex-crazed businessman (played by Fassbender) in NYC. And, not to condone such lurid behavior, but, man, this guy gets down. Like, everywhere.
Including The Standard, which beautifully sets the scene for two climactic moments in the film. The first happens inside the Boom Boom Room, where Carey Mulligan (who plays Fassbender's sister), made up a little like Marilyn Monroe, treats bar guests to a somber rendition of "New York, New York"—and you can literally see the twinkle of the skyline in the background.
Later on, two of Fassbender's many (many, many) sex scenes take place inside what is clearly one of the hotel's west-facing rooms, though The Standard's name is never mentioned. Shoes fly off, hands are pressed against windows...you get the idea. And if you happened to be strolling the High Line during the day of filming, let's just say you were treated to a real sneak preview.

Your Beer 'Stache Could Win You Two Free Nights At The Standard

Got a good 'stache? In honor of Movember, Standard Hotels is running a Facebook contest that encourages people to send in photos of their frothy beer-soaked moustaches—the winner gets two nights at either Standard Downtown LA or Standard NYC. Plus $200 to spend at the Standard Biergarten. Gotta keep that 'stache good and watered!
Of course, we wouldn't be nearly interested in this if we couldn't take a peek at some of the entries submitted so far. Like contestant Ryan, pictured above, who is in the lead with 103 votes. Though we have to admit—we don't see too much froth happening on that upper lip! Looks like this contest needs some real gentlemen to step up to the cyber-plate.

If You Pay Someone To Compliment You, Does It Still Count?

This winter, both Gansevoort Meatpacking and Gansevoort Park Ave are battling Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) with a new promotional package that includes things like a duplex penthouse suite, a tropical cocktail, vitamin D-infused facial, and beach attire for hanging out in your room. For many people, this might just be enough to lift the heavy winter blues.
But Gansevoort's not stopping there. Taking all precautions, the hotel has also decided to photoshop pictures of you with Santa Claus. And provide you with a "friend for the day" (it's exactly how it sounds). Or, even, if that glum mood just won't pick up, to offer a Compliment Concierge that will shower you with praise throughout your entire stay—by the end of which, no doubt you'll be positively elated.
If not slightly stuck-up.

Beyonce And Her Fashion-Forward Unborn Baby Hit Another NYC Hotel

At five months pregnant, she's still running the world
As we know, the Standard has a way of bringing out the best and worst in people. In this case, it seems Beyonce had a rather positive reaction to the hotel's penthouse space during a recent photo shoot with Terry Richardson.
The iconic photographer, who was shooting her for a Harper's Bazaar cover story, captured the star in all her radiant glory—pink trench coat, sparkly dresses and all—including an equally magnificent backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. Imagine that. Her unborn baby hasn't even taken a breath of oxygen and already he or she has traveled to cooler places than us. Sigh.

Guess Who Was Causing A Bloody Racket At The Top Of The Standard?

It's not an entirely flattering photo of dear ol' Lindsay's back—but it's not an entirely flattering story about her either. The rumor, according to Hollywood Life is that hotel-lover Lindsay Lohan threw a full cocktail glass at a photographer while attending a V Magazine bash at the Standard's penthouse bar, Top of the Standard.
The photographer in question, @Jasper Rischen, is now feeling the heat as conflicting variations of the story arise. Did Lohan actually throw the glass? Or was it knocked over? Did a woman actually fall on the broken glass and slice her arm open? How many french fries were tossed? So many questions, so little time.

They Found What In The Gansevoort's Pool?
UPDATE, 2:07pm: Gansevoort Hotel Group has released a new statement on the incident saying that the information gathered by the Post is "categorically misleading." See the new statement below.
In general, we enjoy our NYC hotel pools like we enjoy an NYC hot dog—don't look too close or you'll lose your appetite. Well. The cover's blown this week, after the New York Post did just that. A water cleanliness test is showing that the rooftop pool at the Hotel Gansevoort is actually dirtier than its New York City public pool counterparts.
Thankfully, this comes just a little over a week after the official opening of the city's 54 public pools, so there are plenty of alternatives. Spots like the Dry Dock Playground in the East Village scored much higher than the Gansevoort, and the nearby Chelsea Rec Center is one of the largest in the city. Not to mention cleaner. We found the Post's Gansevoort findings to be a little stomach-turning, so if you have a weak constitution, now might be a good time to look away....

Softcore Porn Proves A Hit At The Standard NYC
It was quite a lively scene on Wednesday night when we visited the Standard New York to check out graffiti artist André Saravia's short film, The Shoe. A little perspective for you: Saraiva wrote the script on a whim after sharing a productive plane ride with Purple Magazine editor Oliver Zahm, who already had roots at the Standard via last September's well-attended Purple Magazine fashion week party. Sure enough, the word for Wednesday evening's event was spread. And the ensuing twenty-minute film proved, once again, the hotel's insatiable appetite for all things sexy.
The third-floor, 1440 square foot, wood-paneled Highline Room was so packed that surplus audience members had to plop down on the floor in between the already-filled chairs. Posters (see above) were on display by the elevators, but didn't explain much. To say the least, we were curious what all the fuss was about. A quick sum up: a leather-jacketed, slick-haired, cigarette-smoking male goes through the course of his day in Paris—wake up, pick up girls, have sex in their apartments, steal their boyfriend's shoes, get beaten up, take his revenge, go back to sleep. You know, the usual.

Exhibitionism Of A More Clothed Kind At The Standard NYC
One of our favorite hotel-related activities – staring in the windows to have a perve peek at what the guests are doing. And when you’re in a hotel which has built its whole reputation on, uhhm, exhibitionism, like the Standard NYC, then we can’t help feeling the guests are fair game.
Which is why we glanced up as we walked the High Line last week and were entranced by these two gents in their respective stairwells. Penny for their thoughts? The guy on top looks like he’s getting some practice in for the J Crew catalogue. The one below looks pensive – hope he’s ok!

The Standard NYC Has a Ginormous and Very Shy New Friend
There's something new at The Standard. But reallywhen isn't that the case? Where the ice skating rink brought joy through the winter, now a statue sits, causing more curious and confused stares than anything else. What is this thing exactly? Officially the title of the art piece is "Companion (Passing Through)," and it's a large-scale sculpture of one of artist KAWS' trademark figures.
KAWS, real name Brian Donnelly, is a born-and-bred NYC-area kid, all grown up and a commercial art success. His work adorns $260 hoodies, special-edition bottles of Dos Equis, and even items as mundane as zipper pulls and plain bath towels. We kinda liked his work two or three years ago before the cross-marketing went gangbusters, but his bringing in this massive piece brings the attention back. Plus, the ginormous piece will have pride of place in The Standard Plaza all the way until October of this year, at which point the hotel will probably begin making preparations to re-install the ice rink.

Who Spilled The Rosé Wine On A StndAir Flight?

When we originally told you about the Standard's new seaplane service between NYC and, well...pretty much anywhere within a 300 mile radius, we admit there were still a few questions left hanging in the air. Do the seats recline? Is it a bumpy ride? Do they serve the wine in glasses or just pass around a bottle?
So we thought we'd turn your attention to an account by the man who actually rode with Balazs on the seaplane's inaugural flight. Gossip columnist Marshall Heyman was hand-picked for the debut trip (if you ever want to be invited to fancy things, start by becoming a gossip columnist for the Wall Street Journal), which apparently also included artist Marco Brambilla (remember that creepy video installation in the Standard's elevator two years ago? Yeah, that was his).
But nevermind Brambilla's nightmarish creativity. Elevators only go up and down. Heyman's ride out to Shelter Island, however, is depicted as a wonderfully sweet—if not slightly surreal—experience.

Emma Roberts and Chord Overstreet Make Music at the Standard NYC
Emma Roberts doesn't seem to mind smooching trouty mouth. The Scream 4 star was spotted cozying up to Chord Overstreet, who is teased on Glee for his big lips at the Standard Hotel in New York City.
The cute couple, who according to HollywoodLife, are officially dating, went to the screening of Thor and then headed to the hotel's 18th floor bar for some post-movie canoodling and lounging.

When Caribbean Week Hits NYC, A Flip-Flop Ball Will Hit The Plaza
Visiting New York's famous Plaza Hotel is a dream for many people, but what about mixing The Plaza's upper-class hoighty-toightiness with some good ol' casual fun? Now that's something we could get into, and it looks like we won't have to wait too long. A Flip-Flop Ball will go down at The Plaza on June 10, in celebration of "Caribbean Week" in NYC.
The event is open to the public, so long as you cough up $350 for a ticket (most proceeds go to scholarships "for Caribbean nationals pursuing careers in tourism").
From the ankle-up, you should dress as if you're attending a regular floofy ball at The Plaza. However, from the ankle down, feel free to bust out the plastic flower-bedecked thongs, your favorite pair of cozy $2.50 Old Navy flops, orour personal favoritesthe Reef sandals with bottle-opener soles. That little extra gadget surely helps cut some of the time waiting for your beer at the bar.
Oh, waitdid we mention there'll be Caribbean rum tastings all night? Stay tune to their Facebook page for when they release the tickets for the ball.
