We promised you a closer look at W Sentosa Cove when we discussed those nifty moveable phone ‘booths’ in the lobby just over a month ago, so here we are today with a gallery full of shots from the 240-room resort on Sentosa Island, a short hop from Singapore’s CBD.
Particularly popular with Singaporeans for a weekend stay-cation, the hotel has everything you expect from one of the latest W properties: slick rooms, lots of facilities that incorporate a W in their name (WET pool, AWAY spa, W lounge, Wired Business Center), and an atmosphere that is, let’s say, party-friendly. We wouldn’t bring the kids, is all we’re saying (notwithstanding that we did see some).
We like to keep it fun but informative here at HotelChatter so our series, What is This?, is devoted to odd-looking items in hotels that upon first glance look as if they serve only a decorative purpose. But everything happens for a reason, right? And we're here to tell you what these things really do.
When it comes to hotel choices in Singapore, you’re likely to think mostly of modern high-rises, or possibly something a bit more colonial in the midst of all the skyscrapers. Just a short taxi ride away from all the frenzy, there is the option of a completely different experience on Sentosa Island, at the less than a year old W Sentosa Cove.
As to be expected, there is a lot to see here – from giant tables hanging upside down from the ceiling in restaurant Kitchen Table, to an even bigger gold-wrapped piece of candy art in the middle of the lawn out back.
Walking past reception, we also came across these three wood-and-fabric, multi-faceted ‘things’ hanging from the ceiling at different heights. So what are these? Read on for a shot of that piece of candy and the answer.

Just the other day we thought we had covered all that was new on the Asian hotel scene but it turns out there's yet another hotel to watch out for---W Sentosa Cove in Singapore, a 240-room property on an island outside Singapore's city center.
The resort was initially set to open in August but now it's set for September 16. And to celebrate the opening the hotel has put together two "Welcome" packages, the first which starts at $306 US a night.
The Island Glamour Welcome package includes one night in a Wonderful room, breakfast for two at the Kitchen Table, and cocktails for two at the hotel's WOOBAR. The Marvelous Welcome package, on the other hand, ups the offerings with a stay in a Marvelous suite, breakfast for two, cocktails, a bottle of Veuve Clicquot and complimentary two-way airport or local address transfers. A minimum stay of two nights is required and the package starts at $627 a night.
We found rates for the Island Glamour package are actually going for $309 US a night so it's slight $3 increase but the good news is that the welcome packages are both available through December 30th. Sadly, it doesn't include internet which is about $15 a day.
UPDATE, 6.21.12: The W Sentosa Cove is now opening September 16th while the W Guangzhou is set for December 31, 2012.
While the latter is scheduled to open in October, W Sentosa, located in an upscale marina residential community outside of Singapore's city center, is gearing up for an August opening. Which is good news for any Lady Gaga fans who heard about her recent stint in Sentosa, and have been wanting an excuse to go see the place for themselves.
But out of all the new Ws opening this year and next, which one in particular strikes your fancy?
