W Bangkok Loves Their Room-Wide Tech, And So Do We

There's no question we were enamored with all of the shiny objects the W Bangkok had to offer us from the moment we stepped foot into gem-toned guest room. The one thing that managed to take us away from the glitz and glam trance was on the bedside table. No, it wasn't the notepad and pen, it was their high-tech wireless tablet that's like a little handheld butler.

The tablet, tempting us with the message, "Do what you want, I'm yours" couldn't get into our hands fast enough. After a few minutes we were trying out all the different settings from the do-not-disturb sign to the climate control and even the preset lighting option; all right from the comfort of our dragon-emblazoned bed.

More Thai Talk: Inside the W Bangkok

Last week, we gave you a sneak peek into Bangkok's shiny new W Bangkokand now we'll pull back the bejeweled curtain and show you the glam rooms. Being in a world-class city, you can expect a new hotel to have all glitz and shine; the W Bangkok doesn't fail the 'come to the party' test with its rooms fit for a jewel smuggler.

From the moment we stepped foot in the door, we knew we were somewhere special. Not only did we notice that 'new hotel' smell--it welcomed guests just 2 months ago--we may have been blinded by the shimmer and sparkle of the rhinestones, like everywhere. We will admit, we like a hotel that can successfully use lots of bling and, in true W style, this hotel has pushed the envelope.

W Bangkok Wows, Leaving Us Wanting Way More

What could be better than sexy design, familiar, yet thoughtful amenities, all the pizazz you can imagine and that new-hotel smell? Not much and that's why we are absolutely loving everything about recently opened W Bangkok.

Here's a little peek into the glam that is one of the city's newest hotels hotspot. Everything you expect from the edgy brand and more featuring glass block room dividers, rich jewel tones and more sparkles than any hotel room we've stayed in, these are the digs that inspire home renovations that fail to hit the mark.

There is a little part of us that feels like we'd been teleported from Southeast Asia to a jewelry gallery mixed with a prize fighters house. Stay tuned for a full review and pics of all of the little touches and pieces of sparkle from the lobby to the room. In the meantime, just simmer in these sexy snaps.

W Times Square Goes Old School Cool With EWOW Suite

Today's sweet suite comes courtesy of the W New York Times Square, which has tickled our fancy by renovating their Extreme WOW suite (aka EWOW) and giving it the theme "Peep Show", which is meant to remind guests of "Times Square's Notorious Past Meets Its Amusement Park Present". And it's managed to do exactly that by seemingly bringing you right inside the New Year's Eve ball--one that's been smashed to pieces, that is.

Starwood's design team spent $2 million for the reno to create an effect that says "welcome to the disco". The gist? There are lights everywhere. The custom, mirrored LED light fixture creates so many different moods, you may require medication to stabilize them after you're done experimenting with the four different elements. Want to begin the evening in slow motion? There's a tempo and a color for that. Y'all want this party started right and quickly? Choose another hue and a different beat and watch as the lights dance on the ceiling. It's trippy, it's tricky, it's fun. And yes, you can shut it off so you're not waking up to a visual rave.

Speaking of waking up, it's hard to avoid the cliche of not wanting to leave the circular, pimp-style bed (the pillows are made out of old ticket stubs) that commands the bedroom and faces the New York City skyline, but it's truly gorgeous.

...The W Hotel Bali!

Yesterday, we teased you a bit with how hotels are gearing up for Summer with heat-wave worthy cocktails. Well, there's a place that only really sees summer year-round and knows how to serve up some easy, breezy drinks to soak up the sun. Bragging about their near-perfect weather, the W Hotel Bali just posted an Instagram that will stir envy with all of their followers.

Rooftop bars are cool and very few hotels do them as well as a W, so why not showcase the super hot sun and tropical libations with an over-the-top fabulous shot? We really can't find an answer for that, and we're totally alright with it.

There has to be something that is retro chic about lounging around surrounded by all things paradise, not to mention it makes us want to head back to Bali as soon as we can. With a few warmer days here in the 'nifty fifty', there is a glimmer of hope that Summer is right around the corner and we can find our position at our favorite roof-top hangout. This snap from the tropical island has us hoping the the mercury rises quickly because we might need a healthy does of vitamin D.

Amanda Bynes Bunks at the W Times Square...With No Pants On

We're no strangers to celebs having total meltdowns in hotels (hi, Charlie Sheen! hi, Lindsay Lohan!), so when we read about 27-year-old actress Amanda Bynes' recent spaz-out at the W New York Times Square, we thought to ourselves, "Of course."

In Touch reports that Bynes was enjoying a month-long extended stay at the hotel recently, when her erratic behavior started to creep out employees in a big way. According to the article:

"…an employee 'found her curled up in the corner of the gym smoking — with no pants on!'"

Apparently, Amanda never got around to reading our handy guide on "What Not To Do In a Hotel". Because we'd definitely file that one under "do not do." Ever.

Bynes has certainly been having a tough time lately (On Thursday, a day after her 27th birthday, she announced she had an eating disorder). And she was also photographed wandering around Times Square (probably en route to her hotel) holding a FedEx package, but then explained on Twitter that the girl in the photographs "was an impostor." Um, right…

As we see it, the W Times Square might actually be her best bet for the time being: earlier this year, the hotel was offering a detox program with supplies for a six-day juice cleanse (the promo's expired, but then again, we're sure they could bend a few rules for the former star of She's The Man.

The W Westwood is Rolling Out a Mobile Fashion Truck

Go To The Hotel's Web

We thought maybe this was just another April Fool's Joke but the W Westwood is actually offering a fashion pop-up shop in the form of a mobile truck. Think food truck but with all the latest fashions!

The Le Fashion Truck will come to the hotel every second Friday of the month this spring and summer, starting April 12 and running through August 9. Inside the stylish pink jalopy will be a variety of merchandise from handmade jewelry, handbags, designer tees, vintage fashions and more. There will even be a dressing room on hand so you can try stuff on before plopping down the cash (or let's be real, plastic.)

Even though the W Westwood is walking distance to the shops in UCLA village and the new City Target as well as Brentwood and Beverly Hills, having Le Fashion Truck outside will make it more convenient for guests who need something special for their night out in LA. Rates at the W on April 12 start at $246 a night.

Celebrate Pi Day With These Delicious Hotel Pies

March 14, 2013 at 12:22 PM | by | Comments (0)

Today is Pi Day (3.14/Π) and if you need a quick geometry recap, that's the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Pi is abbreviated to 3.14 but continues indefinitely, to over 1.2 trillion digits, in fact. Basically, this is a math geek day of celebration (hey, the US House of Representatives officially supported the day's designation in 2009).

Naturally the hotel sector capitalizes on it too, by offering gimmicky deals. That's when our ears perk up--because we're not proud of those math grades of yesteryear, so this we can handle. Don't judge. We're sensitive.

The Charles Hotel in Boston says they’re “recognizing the great minds of Cambridge” by moving the decimal point one space and giving a 31.4% discount on room and suite reservations made today for any night from March 19 - April 2, 2013. Rates begin at $339. Book online or call 800-882-1818 with rate code PI2013.

There are five pizza pies on the BLT Bar & Grill menu at New York's W Downtown, and they're pretty fancy. But if you want to show your love of Pi and throw in a little salute to St. Patrick's Day to boot, go for the Brussels Sprouts Pizza, which has butternut squash, bacon, cippolini onions, and a copious amount of shaved green sprouts on the top. Festive!

7 Unlucky Hotels That Just Can't Catch A Break

March 14, 2013 at 10:16 AM | by | Comments (0)

In honor of St Patrick's Day coming up this Sunday, we thought we'd take a look back at a few hotels that just can't seem to catch a break. If any leprechauns are reading this right now, take note. You've got your work cut out for you!

#7: Le Parker Meridien.

We thought it was bad enough when a random construction accident managed to flood the entire Knave Cafe at LPM. But it turned out the hotel had more bad luck coming, when Hurricane Sandy tore through Manhattan, toppling a nearby crane, and causing Le Parker Meridien to be evacuated. Here's to a cheerier 2013.

#6: JW Marriott Chicago.

The JW Marriott Chicago made plenty of headlines (though not the good kind) this past fall when an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease claimed the lives of three guests who stayed there over the sumer. The Chicago Dept of Public Health reported that the hotel "fully cooperated with the ongoing investigation," and concluded by saying there was no further health threat at the hotel. Still, we're probably going to lay off those hot tub parties for a while.

#5: Revel Resort.

This $2.6 billion resort was supposed to be the saving grace of Atlantic City, but after barely a year of being open, it announced it was planning to file for bankruptcy. Ouch! Hurricane Sandy couldn't have helped things either. We feel like they need a lucky charm or something to bring them back from the dark side, but then again, if a four-night Beyonce run during opening weekend didn't manage to do it, we're not sure what will.

Four more unlucky hotels after the jump!

Florence Welch Winds Down NYFW At The W Union Square

Go To The Hotel's Web

February 14, 2013 at 9:03 AM | by | Comments (0)

As quickly as it came, NY Fashion Week is now but a memory, with the final runway shows, VIP hotel events, and Victoria Beckham sightings all coming to an end today. Shortly, the fashion herds will drift east for London Fashion Week, so it's fitting that flame-haired British pop star Florence Welch was on hand to send off NYFW with a bang.

Plenty of parties peppered NYC hotels last night, though we managed to find one in particular that made us feel more Studio 54 than Devil Wears Prada. Over at W Union Square's basement club Lilium, Welch was the feature presentation, decked out in her trademark white, gauze-y nightgown and daisy chain crown, presiding over the crowds not as a singer but as a DJ. And she sure got folks dancing.

The tunes were hip-hop-y, ranging from Justin Timberlake to Drake, but by far the best part of the evening was Welch's infectious cheer. Not only was she frequently seen jumping up and down on the dance floor along with everyone else (good thing there was a backup DJ), she even joined us for a few quick drunken snapshots inside the club's free photobooth.

Oh, and she managed to go the entire evening without setting fire to the hotel. Best NYFW ever!
