The NY Times Liked The Curtains At Romera, But the Food, Not So Much

Romera is located in the Dream Downtown's basement, and its chef Miguel Sanchez Romera, is a former neurologist who decided to show the world how he thought molecular gastronomy should be done. But judging from Pete Wells' recent review for the New York Times, the various tasting menus, (6-course, $125 ; 9-course, $185; 12-course, $245) sound more like a tutorial in how to make very pretty food art.

Disappointing—and kind of ironic—for the Dream Downtown, which until now had proven to be an exceptionally pretty addition to the NYC hotel scene. A "Romerian mosaic" (the pattern of brightly colored spices and powdered vegetables seen above, and on many of the dishes) would be great to look at in a museum. But for dinner? Folks wanna munch, not ponder!

40 Nights and 12 Dreams Planned For India

Dream and Night hoteliers Sant Chatwal and his son Vikram Chatwal are in the process of bringing their lifestyle hotel brands to India. In a biiig way.

Last we heard, Hampshire Hotels & Resorts, which manages all the Chatwal properties, was being taken over by Wyndham (yeah, it all gets a little confusing after a while, doesn't it?), which was going to help take the brands "to the next level." The way we see it, Chatwal was so pleased with the success of Dream Downtown, he just couldn't wait to bring a little (or a lot) of that same sexiness to Indian hotel guests. Aiming to pump out 52 new hotels over the next five years (40 Nights, 12 Dreams), now Hampshire/Wyndham just have to convince Indian investors and franchisees to share the 'dream' (get it?).

Well, At Least Lindsay Lohan Can Always Get a Free Room at a Dream Hotel

Ladies, dating the club promoter for the hottest club in town is sooo last decade. The new dating up trend is now hoteliers, or so Lindsay Lohan thinks.

We've long suspected that Lohan has been using dating the Dream Downtown's hotelier, Vikram Chatwal, but now it looks like The Superficial has the proof.

The gossip site posted a series of photos of Lohan and Vik inside Vik's apartment in Soho doing whatever it is two people like Lohan and Vik do. Apparently, these shots were taken before Lohan's disastrous attempt to get into some Fashion Week parties at the Dream Hotel.

When Will We Get To See A Chatwal In India?

A lot of talk is flying around these days about a potential expansion into India (as well as London) by big-time hotelier Sant Singh Chatwal, who is Indian himself. Citing the "maximum potential" and "7%-9% growth rate" of India's current economy in this article, Chatwal makes it clear he has his brand-oriented mind set on expanding his luxury hotels onto Indian turf.

But until we get shots of a construction site, we have to scratch our heads and wonder: when will this Dream become a reality?

The Chatwal Can't Wait For Mad Men To Premiere In March

Folks at The Chatwal (now a Luxury Collection hotel) are so excited about the season five premier of Mad Men, they've gone ahead and launched a brand spankin' new Mad Men luxury package for guests—despite the fact that episodes won't even hit the airwaves until mid-March 2012.

Controversy surrounding the new season has been circulating for a while now, and it was only two weeks ago that the official production schedule get released. So filming starts today. But in as little as three weeks, future Chatwal guests will start enjoying Old-Fashions and 90-minute massages as part of the package.

NYC's Dream Downtown Hotel Owns Up to Its 'Cheesy' Looks

It's official! The still-not-open-but-almost-there Dream Downtown hotel on the edge of Manhattan's Chelsea and Meatpacking Districts has a sense of humor. And truly, if there's something we've learned while observing the lives of the hotels around this area, a sense of humor is a serious key for survival.

The Dream Downtown—or "The Cheesegrater" as we've preferred to call it since last year—owned up to their extreme similarity to the culinary tool by actually sending us a cheesegrater, complete with their logo attached. The Dream Downtown may have been delayed for ever and ever and their website might look like Karim Rashid did it for homework (and he might have; his studio is on the block), but the Dream Downtown knows it looks just like a kitchen utensil and it's okay with that. So rock on, Cheesegrater. We can't wait to see what you've been hiding under the slick, silver exterior of yours this summer.

A pic of the hotel itself, behind the cheesegrater:

What Lindsay Lohan and Vikram Chatwal Have in Common

April 7, 2011 at 11:34 AM | by | Comment (1)

It's an unlikely pairing--that of Lindsay Lohan and "hotelier" Vikram Chatwal but it turns out they have more in common than we thought--they have both given up on their careers.

It's been nearly four years since Lohan was arrested for her DUIs and she has yet to find redemption in the eyes of the American public and the legal system. Meanwhile, it's been nearly four years since Vikram hit his "finest hour" as a hotelier. After that, it seems he has largely been letting his father, Sant Singh, run the Vikram Chatwal Hotels business which includes the Dream and the Night Hotels brand (now in partnership with Wyndham.)

So maybe it was only a matter of time before these two met up.

We thought we spied Vik in one of these pics of Lohan out on the town in New York. Plus when we heard Linz was staying at a hotel in midtown we wondered whether it was the Dream. But as it turns out Vik put her up in the new luxe Chatwal Hotel. Page Six reports:

Could the Dream South Beach Be Opening April 1st, or is This a Foolish Thought?

Ooh la la, would you look who's stripping off and unveiling themselves to the world? Well, almost. Yes, this is what the Dream South Beach looks like behind that scaffolding that, until recently, still declared the hotel was opening in 2008.

But when is the long-awaited hotel opening its doors? Could it be April 1? That's what it says on Dream SoBe's Facebook page, in a reply to a customer dated March 3. But, hey, that's April Fool's Day. Are we really going to fall for that?

Chatwal's Cheesegrater Pushes Opening Back to Summer 2011

Checking in on The Cheesegrater—aka the Dream Downtown hotel in New York City—we discover that the opening date has again been pushed back. Last we heard, Vikram Chatwal's newest hotel would be opening it's shiny silver doors in March 2011, but a recent press release firmly changes that to "Summer 2011." Okay, so we've got to wait a few more months before checking out its 316 "loft-inspired guestrooms," but it's not like the hotel is filling a need in the neighborhood; its Swiss cheese facade cuddles right up against the rear of the similarly holey Maritime Hotel.

The Dream Downtown Looks Like a Robot, Finishes up Construction

We've been checking in on the construction for years now, but Vikram Chatwal's Dream Downtown hotel is finally looking like a habitable building now. The odd structure, which butts right up against the rear of the Maritime, has less aesthetic charm; in fact, it looks like a robot and is obviously aiming at what looked cool back in 2001, rather than 2011. Silver? Really? But then again, it is on the border of the Meatpacking District and Chelsea, so perhaps it's hoping club-hoppers will be attracted by its shininess?

Hey, we don't have anything against the place so far except for the fact that it's offending our eyes, and maybe the fact that those rooms look a tad tiny. See what we mean this way:

Liked The Chatwal? You Can Expect More of Them in The Future

August 30, 2010 at 2:15 PM | by | Comments (0)

Vikram Chatwal lives! The WSJ has an in-depth look at the hotel business of Vik and his father, Sant Singh Chatwal, who just opened his Chatwal Hotel the other week. You can see our tours of the hotel here and here.

From the article, we learn some rather interesting things like the genesis of Sant Singh's hotel business in America and his trips and falls along the way. We also learn Vikram has moved in across the street from the Soho Grand Hotel into a $5.4 million townhouse at Soho Mews. (pic of Vik's building.)

But the most surprising news is that aside from opening The Dream Downtown, the Chatwals have another hotel planned for NYC's NoHo nabe which will open in Spring 2011 AND the Dream Hotel South Beach will actually be two hotels called The Dream and The Night. (Currently, it's half-open as the Palmer House. That property will now open in October.) (False Alarm! We read the article too fast. The Dream South Beach will be one hotel, one dream and no Night.)

But they won't stop there.

A half-Dream.

We've been a bit exasperated by the deferred Dream South Beach and the other week when a Twitter follower sent us a Twitpic of the hotel's seemingly slow-going construction, we were disappointed to say the least. (Remember, this hotel is only half-opened right now as The Palmer House.)

However, two commenters in South Beach strongly disagreed with us, saying the hotel is hard at work on opening. The first commenter said the photo we posted was "unfair as it fails to show the incredible progress the building has made, the sky bridge and the huge crews working on the building daily."

He also mentioned that the staff at the Palmer House will also be the staff for the Dream when that side is completed and noted that the hotel has already received great reviews on TripAdvisor.

Another commenter has more helpful info, saying:
