First Look at The Montage Beverly Hills
Update: Eater LA has pics of the resty, Parq.
We had an operative passing through Beverly Hills the other day who peeked into the just-opened Montage Beverly Hills and took these snapshots for us. While we don't have any room photos just yet, we were surprised to see that the staff has such...um...traditional hotel uniforms.
Our spy was also surprised by how the hotel was a bit of a let-down.
The décor falls short, and--dare I say--kind of feels Disney at some points. It's definitely a bit more upscale KB home than it is "Spanish Colonial." I don't get Spanish at all from the feel. The hallways are a bit barren. Not the same delightful California impressionism that you'd see at their Laguna property... I am just unimpressed. but second impressions can be better.
Hmmm...we have to get on over to the Montage and check it out for ourselves. More photos are after the jump.
If you've been by the Montage recently, let us know what you thought.

Top Hat Makes Entire Hotel Uniforms, Not Just Hats

Ever wondered where those goofy uniforms you see on hotel staff came from? Turns out not all of them were made in China: there's a uniform designer and manufacturer that does all the work in New York, called Top Hat Image Wear.
Not that we're personally in the market for any uniforms ourselves, but it is interesting to see what's out there and how bad or how good the staff at our favorite hotels could really look.

Return of the Uncool Hotel Uniforms

With all the news about cool designer hotel uniforms out there, we forgot that some hotel employees are still languishing in ridiculous god-awful get ups.
Like these folk at the Good View Hotel in Tangxia. Lord, this is just too awful to look at! And why do the women have to wear the cowboy boots while the men wear those ugly trainers? Or maybe that's a good thing? Those shoes are pretty awful.

Uncool Hotel Uniforms Wrap-Up
So this week we took a look at the goofy outfits that hotel management force their bellhops and doormen to wear.
But really, we only touched the surface of goofy hotel staff uniforms (have you been to Vegas lately?) So if you see a poor working stiff in a ridiculous outfit, take a pic and send it to us immediately.
If we get the word out there that organ grinder uniforms and leprechaun hats are not acceptable, hotels might begin to listen.
And now, a look back:

Uncool Uniforms: Hotel Polana

We just hope all that "flair" is on his doorman's jacket because he wants it there and not because management at the Hotel Polana says so.

Uncool Bellhop Uniforms: Sir Francis Drake Hotel

Really, there is not much else to say about this Beefeater (and technically not a bellhop) at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco except please be kind and tip him--even if he's just opening the door for you.

Uncool Bellhop Uniforms: Hotel Del Coronado

This outfit is so wrong on many levels.
First off, the hat is terrible. And it doesn't make sense. The Del prides itself on its storied history (Marilyn Monroe and other Hollywood Golden Age figures) but when in history were those derby hats really ever good-looking? The only people who should be wearing those are leprechauns.
Second, the vest with its gold velvet collar and gold buttons is a little ill-fitting and just ill in general. The pleated pants are also not flattering, especially not with those sneakers.
We think this bellhop knows how ridiculous he looks (see forced smile) which is why he has added some sunglasses to a) hide his face and b) attempt to redeem himself, essentially telling us, "I really am cool--deep down and off-duty."

Uncool Bellhop Uniforms: New Otani Tokyo

Blame it on the advent of boutique hotels who started to employ too cool, dressed only in black bellhops to man the doors and cart your luggage to your rooms.
Because now whenever we see a bellhop in an authentic uniform, complete with a goofy cap, we can't help but wonder what who actually likes to see these costumed getups on the hotel staff? And isn't it just a bit humiliating?
Take for instance this bellhop at the New Otani Tokyo Hotel. Although he sure seems happy in his job, we can't believe he puts that cap on every day.
However, he's not alone. This week we'll be bringing you pictures of some more humiliating bellhop outfits. Hope your eyes can handle it.
