Folks On Twitter Remind Us That Hurricane Hotel Stays Can Be Fun Too

With over 7,000 flights to and from the Northeast canceled last night, plenty of folks are suddenly facing the reality of being stuck in a hotel until the storm passes. Hotels, of course, aren't complaining because, hey, business is business. And just like we saw last year, many hotels are going out of their way to offer special discounts to stranded travelers.
So far, it seems Kimpton, Loews and Ritz-Carlton have been the most vocal about reaching out to guests.
But what about the travelers themselves? We did a quick little scan of hotel guest reactions on Twitter, and, for the most part, it looks like people are making the most of the situation, just relaxing in their hotel rooms, while everyone else scrambles to prepare for the 'worst storm of the century.'
· For comedian Mike Birbiglia (@birbigs) and a few others, the first order of business was scoping out the minibar for emergency food rations: "Sure hope the mini-bar in my hotel has enough food for the apocalypse. Day 1: peanut M & Ms. Day 2: nut assortment, or maybe Coke." Nothing says a complete meal like candy and soda!

5 Fried Chicken-Loving Hotels To Make Azealia Banks Swoon

Hip hop star Azealia Banks—whose hit song "212" went viral in early 2012—took a moment on Twitter yesterday to proclaim the wonders of sitting in hotel rooms eating fried chicken and watching BBC documentaries. Which we can totally identify with.
So for her sake (and partly our own), we decided to put together a handy Top 5 list of US hotels that serve awesome fried chicken, to be enjoyed either in-room or at the restaurant. As for the BBC docs? Less of a concern.
#5. Revel in Atlantic City made a big splash at the start of the summer by opening with a Beyonce concert. Well, we got to take a look around the hotel last month, and particularly enjoyed the fried chicken with garlic mashed potatoes ($23) we sampled at Central Michel Richard. Who needs taco trucks anyway?

For Better Or Worse, NYC Hotels Got Their Fair Share Of The Spotlight This Week

They say there's no such thing as bad publicity, so we'll just go ahead and assume that somehow Grand Hyatt, The Mercer and Peninsula New York have managed to find the silver lining in the torrent of media attention that has come each of their ways this week.
First up: The Mercer played a starring role in an absurd incident involving a red Ferrari 458 Spider, an NYPD officer's foot, and The Hills star Stephanie Pratt's boyfriend. And, as luck would have it, the whole thing was caught on film and posted to YouTube.
To recap, a cop was issuing the car a parking ticket when the driver, Julian Chabbott, stormed out of the hotel, got into the car, and started trying to drive away while the cop was standing there. In a matter of seconds, he'd been pulled out of the driver's seat, shoved against the side of the car and thrown to the ground because he allegedly ran over the cop's foot. Hooray for innocent passersby armed with smartphones!

Get a Free App (The Kind You Eat) at Fairmont Hotels on Social Media Day

A few years ago, we fully embraced using social media when staying at hotels. Finally, you could publicly tweet out a complaint (or a compliment) on Twitter and get some instant notice from the hotel, as opposed to calling down to the black hole that is sometimes known as the front desk.
You could also check-in to Foursquare and get a discount on your hotel stay or a drink at the hotel bar and by liking a hotel on Facebook you could see their latest promotions and participate in contests for a free stay.
But not long after, the fun wore off. The discounts and promos weren't worth the effort that it took to remember to check-in, Tweet or like a hotel every time we entered one. Yet Fairmont Hotels might just win us over on Social Media Day which is happening this June 30.

Twitpic of the Week: Here's Why You'll Love Staring At An Empty Wall At The James Chicago
In the ever-expanding universe of Twitter, there is one particular trend @HotelChatter happens to quite enjoy: candid hotel photos. These pics range from stunning views to anti-views to celebrity tomfoolery and everything in between. And we can't get enough of 'em! Every Monday, we commemorate our favorite "Twitpic of the Week." Got a favorite of your own? Want to show off your sweet suite? Send it in!

It's no secret that the James Chicago likes to offer fun little "extras" at the hotel: whether that's a pop-up ice cream shop, or a noteworthy artist-in-residence program or an in-room cocktail amenity. And so we weren't too surprised to see a recent guest tweet this photo of one of the hotel's 26 in-room DVD projectors.

A Hotel Stay Is Never Boring When Jedis Fight In The Lobby

We don't know exactly what might have prompted this awesome public display of nerd-dom (Star Wars convention? Flashmob? Family reunion?), but we are so very glad @k4ng took the time to capture these saber-wielding Jedis in the lobby of the Renaissance Austin. And what better place: with all the rooms looking down onto the lobby, pretty much every guest had front row seats to the show!
On our last visit to Austin, most of the hotels were full up with SXSW musicians, filmmakers, attendees and media types. But clearly, the real magic happens about a month later...

The Best Hotel in the World, According to DVF
You know what the beautiful thing about celebrity Twitter accounts is? Oftentimes, they actually are controlled by the celebrity, and wethe listening publicget to know what they really think. Very occasionally this even includes hints on hotels. Keep An Eye On The New World Trade Center From Your Room At Trump Soho

The NY Daily News did a story last weekend on the rapidly-rising World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan, which just recently hit the 93rd floor, and is set to surpass the Empire State Building's roof in just a couple of weeks.
Sure, by 2014, you'll be able to actually ascend the tower's 102nd-floor observation deck. But until then, to get a good dead-on look at the construction, we'd recommend booking a room near the top of one of our favorite killer view hotels in Manhattan, the Trump Soho.

Planking is So Over. It's All About Mad Men 'Draping' Now.
As if you aren't being bombarded with ads for the new season of AMC's Mad Men, there's now also a viral stunt making its way around the social networks. It's called Draping, and the idea is simple: mimic Don Draper's pose in the famous Mad Men graphic (with his arm slung over a seatback, a cigarette casually perched between fingers), and post the pic with the hashtag #draping.
If you do some #draping in hotels & want to share, include @hotelchatter in your tweet or instagram, and we'll post some next week!
The character of Don Draper is no newbie when it comes to hotels, and one property that's been around since the days of "Ad Men" is super excited over the whole #draping thing:

Dita Von Teese Picks a Perfect but Pricey Paris Hotel

A "Salon Room"
In 2009, burlesque performer and all-around awesome celeb Dita Von Teese tweeted a Paris hotel recommendation to her followers. At that time, she named the art deco Hotel Lutetia, but in 2012, her loyalties lie elsewhere.
Earlier today, Dita answered the hotel recommendation question again for a fan:
The vintage rooms at The Hotel Raphael @MonsieurDeMatt: @DitaVonTeese I'm going to Paris in May... nice hotels you know?
— Dita Von Teese (@DitaVonTeese) March 20, 2012
The Hotel Raphael is now not only Dita-approved, but moved to the top of our list after only a few minutes' time spent browsing their website. Those rooms! That furniture! The terrace in the Arc de Triomphe suite! Le sigh.
Glamor like this won't come cheaply, however; rooms start at 315 Euro per night, or 465 Euro if you want the lowest level of suite. That said, these rooms would make the perfect setting for a honeymoon, photo shoot, bachelorette night...etc. Thanks again, Dita!

Whitney Houston's Death at The Beverly Hilton Was Not Right, Nor Was It Ok

By now everyone knows that our childhood idol one of the greatest voices ever heard, Whitney Houston, who lived a life full of superstar highs and drug addiction lows, tragically passed away on Saturday afternoon at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. And like so many celebrity deaths in this 24-hour news cycle and info-ravenous age, the details surrounding her death keep on coming.
Houston died in a fourth floor suite at the hotel just hours before she was set to attend Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy party at the hotel. TMZ also reports that she was found underwater in the bathtub, possible from a Xanax overdose and that her last night on earth was spent getting rowdy in the hotel bar.
As if that weren't sufficiently tragic, TMZ also reports that Whitney's daugher, Bobbi Kristina, showed up at the hotel hours after her mother was found dead and demanded access to the room to see her mother one last time. She was later taken away from the hotel in a stretcher and sent onto Cedars-Sinai to be treated for shock, exhaustion and dehydration.
While all this terrible sadness and drama unfolded on the fourth floor, there was a party going on downstairs.
