The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel Gets Jazzed About Brunch

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel has a long and checkered history that well pre-dates today’s celebrity tantrums and “Super Sweet 16” parties. As a way of hearkening back to that golden-hued heyday, the hotel has started offering a new ”Jazz Brunch” on Sundays from 11:00am-3:00pm.
Since the special brunch starts at $18 per person, it’s actually a pretty good deal, especially for a Thompson Hotel, and especially considering that overnight parking will run you around $30, and the standard rate for a stay at the hotel starts at $225 a night.
If you’re anything like us, you’re naturally dubious about any meal that is accompanied by live music. What is this, the shoe department of Nordstrom’s? But we checked up on it, and here’s the scoop.

Thompson Hotel Toronto To Open (Like a Lion?) in March

While Thompson Hotels is busying itself with "Thompsonizing" The Hotel Sax in Chicago, they shan't forget about our neighbors to the North.
When we last checked in with Thompson Toronto, it was June and they were hinting at a 2010 opening. Judging from Thompson's past hotel opening delays we figured Summer 2010 would be a kind estimate. But Thompson co-owner Stephen Brandman has told us they are looking at March 2010 and they seem very confident in that date.
Now, the old adage says "March comes in like a lion but goes out like a lamb" yet we say that with the Thompson's penchant for soft-openings, TT will come in like a lamb and go out like a lion in June or so, when the rooftop bar and pool are ready to open.
Meanwhile, the Thompson Hotels website still says "Opening 2009."

On December 1st, The Hotel Sax Chicago Will Be Thompsonized

Room 1433 at Hotel Sax Chicago.
We received a couple of tips lately that there was something brewing with Thompson Hotels and usually when more than one tip comes in, we know something's up. But today we have confirmation that indeed The Hotel Sax in Chicago, best known for its RockBand studio and where we recently shacked up the other week, is turning into a Thompson Hotel.
The conversion will officially happen on December 1st and while the hotel was recently renovated a few years ago, we fully expect the place to get "Thompsonized."

Rachel Zoe Switches Her New York Hotel Loyalty
Alright, we'll admit it: we are totally addicted to the Bravo Show The Rachel Zoe Project, which follows top Hollywood stylist Rachel Zoe through runway shows in New York, award show fittings in LA, and everywhere in between. In the first season, Rachel famously occupied the penthouse at the 60 Thompson hotel in the Soho neighborhood of New York City.
When the Thompson LES opened, we knew that it was only a matter of time before Rachel Zoe was calling it "bananas" and making it her new headquartersas she did in the second season during New York Fashion Week. Her husband Rodger her assistants Taylor and Brad all agreed that the view from the LES' penthouse was very impressive, as was the whole space.
So now you can imagine our surprise to discover that Rachel Zoe has decamped to The Standard.

Rachel Zoe Thinks Thompson LES Is 'Kind of Awesome'

Rachel Zoe, stylist to celebs like Anne Hathaway and Cameron Diaz and star of Bravo's The Rachel Zoe Project, set up camp at the Thompson LES Hotel in New York for Fashion Week.
But the super-skinny stylista didn't have time to swim in the Andy Warhol-bottomed pool. Team Zoe was too busy averting fashion disasters like nip slips and ugly taffeta trains in the Thompson Loft, the penthouse suite on the 18th and 19th floors of the hotel. "This is kind of awesome," Zoe said as she looked around the duplex. She and her hubby, Rodger, admired the exposed concrete ceilings and columns.

Digital Nomad Lobbies: Working It Out at Smyth Tribeca
There has been a lot of talk recently about the lifestyle of digital nomads -- folks who work from wherever they might roam. HotelChatter has been covering hotel wifi since the beginning, but as we cited in our 2009 annual hotel wifi report times they are a changin'.
The biggest change on the tech side is the growing popularity of the usb broadband card. As more and more people buy into these cards (and more and more GMs pray to the hotel gods they do) there are a growing number of digital nomads that no longer tap into a hotel WiFi network.
Instead, these nomads are in search of killer hotel lobbies to comfortably work in. That's right, digital nomads have no problem coming in, kicking back on hotel lobby couches and doing an hours worth of work. So once again hotels have a choice -- welcome these folks, pay no mind to them, or actively try to kick them out.
With this in mind, we figured it was time for us to start rating hotel lobbies on their digital nomad quotient. In our latest edition, the The Smyth Tribeca Hotel.

PC of 'NYC Prep' Throws a Party at the Six Columbus Penthouse

We totally got suckered into the new Bravo TV reality show, NYC Prep. We have no good reason to explain this except that watching rich teenagers do and say stupid things is hilarious when you're 30 years old and you still drink out of a bottle--a wine bottle that is.
Anyways, every epsiode Bravo likes to have the kids do one of two things--something straight out of Gossip Girl plotline or spend a serious amount of money on stuff that average adults could only dream about. In last night's episode, we had both!
Camille, Kelli and a friend toured Harvard while the guyliner-wearing, 18 going on 30, PC threw a small party in the penthouse of the 6 Columbus, a Thompson Hotel on Columbus Circle.

Donovan House's Pool Looks Like More Fun Than Thompson LES's
Thompson's track record has been not so good with their outdoor pool scene. Well, back up: that's kind of a vast generalization based on the issues the NYC Lower East Side neighbors have (quite vocally) had with the pool crowd at the Thompson LES namely, it's loud and obnoxious.
But mmm, doesn't this shot of DC's Donovan House's pool get you going a little bit? This space, which was (unfortunately or fortunately, depending on who you are) "modeled after the exclusive A60 at 60 Thompson in New York and ABH at Thompson Beverly Hills," is officially called Above D.C. (ADC). We're not quite sure what the scene is like up there during its first seasonal go-round (but feel free to tell us), but it sure does look posh, doesn't it?
It's rockin' a full service bar and lots of food from chef Susur Lee's Zentan, Brazilian Ipe decking and, yes, Cherry Blossom Trees and you can sip on that infamous signature cocktail from A60, “The Thom”, while you're up there.
Meanwhile, we'd like to add this: Zentan needs to get its website together.

Guess Who's Probably Not Allowed at Above Allen or A60?

Ali Wise, the blonde armcandy to Thompson Hotels' Jason Pomeranc for many years, was arrested the other day for hacking into another blonde's voicemail accounts using some computer software called SpoofCard. No one knows for sure why Wise would be so unwise and hack into this person's voicemail but a few reports speculate that it may have something to do with affairs of the Pomeranian...er....Pomerancian heart.
NY Daily News reports that Wise is "cuckoo" over Pomeranc who she split from late last year but has been reportedly seeing on and off. Sources says she may have used the Spoofcard to hack into his voicemails and emails to find out if he was dating other women. CityFile even reminds us that Pomeranc and co. were victims of a hacking incident last year that remains unsolved.
But apparently, it's not just love that drives Wise to obsession.

Gild Hall Now Charging $10 for Practically Dial-Up Internet Speeds
Yikes. We stumbled upon this shot on Flickr and were not pleased to lay our eyes upon it though we were grateful that our own WiFi connections were, um, at least fast enough to load Flickr in a timely fashion.
This is a screenshot from guest evoque, who apparently stayed at Gild Hall and had to fork over a 10-er in order to connect to the WiFi network. At a speed of 512k. Slow. Lame. Boo. The caption on the shot reads:
$10/day for a blazing 512k/512k WiFi connection it's more Internet side road than Internet superhighway.
And we all know that people who are down with clever wordplay deserve faster WiFi, right? Regardless, this could have been forgivable except that we haven't forgotten that Thompson Hotels' WiFi used to be totally free, and they just started charging for it this year. Ugh. If you're going to make us pay for this stuff, at least give us a decent connection to work with.

What is Happening With Thompson Toronto?
Um, remember Thompson Toronto? Perhaps not, as it hasn't opened up yet and there hasn't been a whole lot of buzz about the place in recent months but we assure you, it's still on its way.
At least: we were assured the place is still on its way. We don't have an exact opening date for you, but a fairly official Thompson-er told us the place was set for the end of 2009 (and the hotel's website still exists and lists 2009, which is promising) but all the press releases we'd seen for the Do Not Disturb restaurant group [sidenote: yes, the Thompson dudes started their own restaurant group in case you missed it] seem to be hinting at a 2010 opening.
Here is what we know: there will be a pool and an ice rink, and the rooms will look a little bit like this.
...Annnd that's all we've got. What can you tell us? Any word? Do share.

Inside The Hollywood Roosevelt's Tower Rooms
While off about the world, staying in everything from bed-and-breakfasts to five-star hotels, don't forget that you need some transportation to reach these places. Over at Jaunted, we've been covering the launch of Jetblue's inaugural LAX routes, and the airline was kind enough to put us up at the good old Hollywood Roosevelt, conveniently around the corner from their afterparty at the club MyHouse.
Since we've already been to this hotel previously, staying in a cabana-level room, we'll make this review of our night in a tower-level room short and sweet.
