Standard Grill Finally Welcomes The Plebes, But Only For Dinner
| June 30, 2009 at 9:07 AM | 1 Comment
After weeks of taunting us with their under-wraps preview dinners for the people on the fashion and social scene, The Standard NYC's Standard Grill restaurant finally opened to the public this last week, and boy it is a drool-inducer.
Our first few cloak-and-daggers glimpses of itsee our spying here and here revealed luscious dark tones and an artfully-constructed faux-vintage/industrial interior, proper of a restaurant underlying the old High Line railway tracks.
This week however, Gothamist got a proper reveal of the glory that is their bar room and their main room, and we couldn't be more excited about eating eggs benedict in these booths.

The Standard Grill Opens at The Standard New York Today
| June 22, 2009 at 5:58 PM | 1 Comment

The Standard Grill has finally opened to the public at the Standard New York and its debut seems to be the only bright spot in the rain-soaked city. Chef Dan Silverman of Lever House has created the restaurant's chophouse fare but the restaurant is still in a soft-opening phase so only dinner is served. Breakfast, lunch and late night service will begin "in the next two weeks or so," according to a hotel rep.
Some background on the restaurant: Hotelier Andre Balazs wanted this restaurant to fit in with the rest of the Meatpacking district, having devised a somewhat elaborate story as to how this restaurant would have come into existence otherwise. According to him, it would have been a butcher shop before expanding to serve some light fare and drinks and then finally becoming a full-fledged restaurant. Indeed, the restaurant looks like it was here first even though it's adjacent to the funky Standard Hotel. And inside you can almost see the evolution Balazs envisioned.

Bruce Willis Strips For The Standard New York
| June 16, 2009 at 10:00 AM | 0 Comments
Although The Standard NYC had their first porny photoshoot over two months ago and the voyeur stories have already poured in, the hotel has curiously lacked any high fashion spreads.
Until now, with the newest issue of W Magazine and its uncomfortably-S&M-ish series of images of Bruce Willis and newest wife Emma in dramatic poses throughout the building. Called "Honeymoon Hotel," the glossy photoset includes some snaps taken in a plywood elevator hallway, like in the photo above, while other shots feature the Hudson-facing bathrooms inside the guestrooms, the emergency exit stairwell, and even the hotel's kitchen.

The Cooper Square Panty Girl Has Nothin' on Standard NYC Guests
| June 11, 2009 at 6:35 PM | 0 Comments
Haha. Some fun news to end your day with (er, or maybe not that fun, depending on how you look at it): apparently New Yorkers are getting some pretty explicit views of the sexytime going on at the Standard NYC. The High line just opened, and there are puh-lenty of people bouncing around the Standard's 'hood looking around with their eyes wide open and they are seeing puh-lenty of what's going on inside the rooms at the Standard. Which also involves, er, bouncing around.
New York Magazine reports:
Our Tim Murphy found a visitor to the High Line who spotted a naked hotel guest midway up the hotel, and there’s even some evidence of nudity online. But a couple of locals tell us they’ve witnessed more than a couple of pressed hams. Meatpacker Ricky Serling begins his day with a view of the hotel from the meat co-op on Little West 12th Street. “I’ve seen men and women, women and women, men and men [in the windows],” he says, modestly. “Lights, leather, chains. Everything.”
Whoops! NY Mag interviewed someone who worked at nearby bar Hogs & Heifers, and he went into some pretty nitty-gritty detail about what he saw (ha, we're not going to post it here go there and look). Seems like the Standard is fast turning into the official sex hotel of NYC now #151; what with the pornsy photo shoots and all this public-ish sexytime.
Yeah, Cooper Square panty girl: you've got nothing on these people. Er, because these people have nothing on.

Something's Finally Cooking at The Standard Grill
| June 11, 2009 at 9:17 AM | 0 Comments
It's been two months since our first, revealing brush with the finished Standard Grill Restaurant at NYC's Standard Hotel, and even though the High Line Park above is open, the dining action below remains on the DL.
Although the tables have had place settings for these two months, the restaurant has only recently entered into friends and family mode so that both front and back of house staff will be well trained come opening night. Let's face it: recession or not, this place will be packed all summer with folks coming off the High Line, shacking up upstairs in the hotel, window shopping in the Meatpacking District and West Village, or just looking to lick the newest plate in town.

Video Exhibit at L.A.'s Standard Hotels Anything But Standard
| June 8, 2009 at 4:22 PM | 0 Comments

For the next six months, guests and passersby at the Standard Hotel’s two L.A. properties will be treated to a video art show by artist and Guggenheim fellow Kalup Linzy, whose works have also appeared at New York’s MoMa, and the Whitney.
Entitled Key to Our Heart and SweetBerry Sonnet, Linzy’s works are meant to raise questions about gender, sexuality, race, class and popular culture by mocking soap operas’ and Hollywood films’ storytelling conventions—and many of Linzy’s works feature the male artist dressed in outlandish women’s clothing for an added impact.

NYC's High Line Has Opened and The Standard Has Front Row Seats
| June 8, 2009 at 1:58 PM | 0 Comments

NYC's new High Line Park is finally opening in the city's Meatpacking district and there is really no better place to view the park it all its restored glory than from The Standard.
We toured the Standard last week and despite the light rain and clouds, the unobstructed views of Manhattan and New Jersey were still killer. And peering down from the hotel's rooftop, we could see the High Line in all its new green glory.
The High Line is actually an old railroad track that was built in the 30s to lift freight trains off the city streets. The first planned section of the High Line park officially opened earlier today. The second part, extending up to 30th Street, will open in 2010.
Room rates for tonight and tomorrow are a steep $395 a night for a standard queen. Request a lower floor room facing the High Line for serious up-close High Line action. And as is the case with the rest of the Standard NYC, voyeurism is a given. Just remember: if you can see them, then they can definitely see you.

Go Between 'Heaven' and 'Hell' Via the Standard NY Elevator
| June 5, 2009 at 1:52 PM | 1 Comment
Whoa. We were just minding our own business around the Twitterverse when the Stan D'Arde Twitter linked to something we sort of can't take our eyes off of: a piece called "Civilization" by artist Marco Brambilla; a "video installation in the elevators at the Standard New York depicting the 'ride' from Heaven to Hell." Wow. Wow. (Note: it sort of looks like Hell to Heaven to Hell to us, but we're not sure).
Watch the whole thing here if you dont want to ride up and down the elevators at the Standard all day; and, um, we're going to just go ahead and say the Standard is lucky they've been getting good reviews because if this place was Hotel Hell, then we'd have a lot of fun writing headlines and puns with this one.

The Standard NYC Finally Gets Its First Nude Photoshoot
| April 27, 2009 at 1:08 PM | 2 Comments
We knew it was only a matter of time before news of sexy photo shoots at The Standard NYC starting pouring in, and luckily we'd recognize this baby diaper-ish bedspread anywhere. First spotted by Fleshbot (Warning: very, very NSFW), these artsy-naughty shots of Standard sex come from notorious lothario Olivier Zahm of Purple Fashion, who it seems didn't have any of the choicest Standard rooms for his frolic.
The gallery features not only The Standard bed and wood bed backsplash, but also actress Paz de la Huerta, whose most recent role was as a sex addict in Choke. Perhaps this night at the hotel counted as research? In any case, we know that housekeeping had their hands full after checkout of this threesome; they had dirty shoes on the bed and you just know that the minibar was raided.

Our Spying on The Standard NYC Reveals Their Restaurant
| April 6, 2009 at 12:13 PM | 0 Comments
Occasionally, we find ourselves strolling through just the right parts of Manhattan at just the right times, and luckily for us and for The Standard's hype, things always seem to happen at the Meatpacking District hotel when we're around to snap them.
Case in point: We took a walk on a lovely evening and happened to roll by The Standard just as workers were removing the paper from the windows of the street-level restaurant, revealing tables already set and booths so round and so red that we started to drool at the thought of sinking our tushies into them. According to Eater, this is the setting for what will be a steakhouse from Dan Silverman, formerly of the trendy Midtown East eatery Lever House. From these first shots, however, we're getting less of a chophouse vibe from the space and more bistro; this is going to a booming brunch spot no matter what.

NYT Experiences Dramatic and Traumatic Views at Standard NYC
| March 30, 2009 at 11:26 AM | 0 Comments

Three months after its soft opening, The Standard NYC got the standard New York Times treatment this past weekend. True to form, the NYT ate up the trendy Manhattan hotel’s cheap soft opening rates (from $195, breakfast included), buzz-worthy location (cantilevered over the High Line near the Meatpacking District), and incredible views.
Like us, the NYT’s Fred Bernstein was less-than-thrilled about the exhibitionist bathroom, in which the toilet is the only thing hidden behind closed doors, while the rest is in plain sight from the bedroom. As Bernstein puts it, “[O]penness has its downside: In our case, a room service delivery arrived when one of us was in the shower.” (AWK-WARD.) Not to mention the pesky steam effect from the shower: “Through fogged windows, the stunning view became a dripping mess.” But there’s no mention of the floor-soaking showerhead, which gives us hope that others have made it work better than we did.

Standard LA Is Totally Having a Rooftop Architecture Party, And You're Invited
| March 27, 2009 at 11:06 AM | 0 Comments
If you're reading this, then we think it's fair to assume that you like blogs, or at least don't mind them. And since you're reading about hotels, then perhaps it's safe to postulate that you may also have a thing for architecture, or maybe trendy interior design? If you're game for a little party involving all of these (blogs, hotels, architecture and design), then the Standard Downtown LA may just have you booked up next week.
