Indulge Your Lederhosen Fantasies With The Standard's Biergarten Shirt

Where: 848 Washington Street [map], New York, ny, United States
January 5, 2010 at 9:04 AM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

The winter weather might be keeping The Standard New York's Biergarten restaurant shuttered 'til springier temperatures, but that doesn't mean the faux Oktoberfest frivolity has to stop. To make sure you are always properly dressed for slamming steins, The Standard has rolled out T-shirt versions of the traditional German dirndl and lederhosen outfits.

You can get them for $35 each in The Standard's online store, keeping company with such personal favorites as The Standard's grey flip flops and their $425 bed coverlet.

The men's version, after the jump.

After reading the last award for Hotelier of the Year, it's no surprise that this year's People's Choice Award is The Standard NYC.

Whether it was the man candy opening the doors, admiring the stunning room views, looking at the boldfaced names that graced the Boom Boom Room or catching up on the latest in the "Who Got Naked at The Standard?" saga, you guys just couldn't get enough of this hotel, as it was the most viewed hotel page of 2009.

We stayed here right around when it first opened and here are some of our initial thoughts on the place.

Courtney Love to Brings Her Special Brand of Crazy To The Standard on NYE

Even though this is a post about a New Year’s Eve party, consider it a Public Service Announcement: Courtney Love is performing at The Standard NYC on New Year’s Eve.

Now, we made that bold but we feel like it deserves flashing red warning lights around it. We can’t think of anything worse than spending the first moments of 2010 with Love, but maybe you’re the kind of person who digs watching train wrecks happen right before your eyes, and can steel yourself for an awkward emotional outburst from the messiest person in the room come midnight.

Maybe you’d even like to spend $250 and up for that honor? That’s the starting price for tickets to this “party”—and they go into the thousands if you want a table with views of the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty.

Cheerio and Hola! Standard Hotels to Open in London and Costa Rica

December 3, 2009 at 12:34 PM | by juliana | 1 Comment

[Update]: A Standard rep says that London and Costa Rica are high on Andre's list but "as of now there are no confirmed plans." So expect these to open, as reported, "eons from now."

We always suspected that hottie hotelier Andre Balazs would soon be expanding his Standard Hotels brand but we haven't quite been able to follow his mysterious plans. We thought for sure Seattle and then we thought definitely somewhere in the Caribbean with his Maison Tropicale.

But now the PX This blog writes that Standard Hotels will be taking their show on the road to London and Costa Rica.

Your beloved chain of snazzy flophouses, by your favorite cute diminutive hotelier, is expanding to include locations in both London and Costa Rica. Plus, you can probably expect to see some familiar faces to welcome you with open arms when the awesome formidable projects are finally (eons from now) consummated.

Ugh. We were excited until we read "eons from now." But we're gonna guess that the London property will be very much like the Standard NYC (A future HC headline: "Brits showing off naughty bits!") and that Costa Rica will be more of a retreat a la Standard Miami.

We've put in a call and an email to the Standard Hotels rep and we'll update you when we have new info. Until then, send us your own scoop or drop your thoughts in comments below.

Turkey Dinners at Both L.A. Standard Hotels

Here’s a Thanksgiving conundrum we face every year: after starving ourselves all day, we finally get to chow down on a huge family feast at about 4pm, finish at 7 (or 8 if you help clean up), and then…nothing. What are you to do for the rest of the evening?

Sure, there’s a little apathy-inducing tryptophan coma to overcome, but after all that food, sometimes you just want to get out and move around. Or hang out with some people you’re not related to (or married into). Only there’s nowhere to go and no one to go with—unless you end up calling people you used to hate in high school in the hopes that they too have been dragged home for the holidays.

So you end up stuck watching reruns with your family as everyone starts snoring around the TV. Until now.

Both locations of the Standard Hotel in Los Angeles are offering Thanksgiving activities so you can eat as much as you want and stay out as late as you want. They’ll even cook you dinner if you’ve left plans to the last minute, and both are charging a remarkably reasonable rate for their prix-fixe menus.

The Standard Hotel is The Best Building of the Aughts, So Says Curbed

Curbed recently put out the first of what will be many lists across the internet universe, saying goodbye to the aughts. But this being Curbed, they focused on the The Best New Buildings of The Decade for New York City. And wouldn't you know it? The Standard Hotel is the #1 best building of the decade.

Yes, The Standard. Since we tracked the opening of this hotel pretty much from its inceptions, we're a little surprised to see it top this list. We say it looks way better from the inside looking out then just on its own. But we guess naked people in the windows helps.

Here are some of our favorite moments of the Standard NYC...through the years.

Even If You're a Hotel Guest, The Standard's Boom Boom Room Kicks You Out at 9

Where: 848 Washington Street [map], New York , ny, United States, 10014
November 11, 2009 at 9:33 AM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

Who wants to hear some ridiculous Manhattan hotel news? The Standard's top-floor lounge/club Boom Boom Room (or whatever they're calling it), only allows hotel guests up between the hours of 4-9pm. What happens at 9pm, you ask? Well, a very PYT HotelChatter operative reported back from a boozy evening in the Boom Boom Room that everyone is kicked out at the stroke of nine. This way, the place can be reopened for private and celeb-filled parties at 10pm.

This means no late night socializing and snacking and no nightcaps in the Boom Boom's plush environs, even though you are a paying guest of the hotel. Still, our operative managed to capture a few undercover pictures before the curfew came down, and we see a sampling of the "Sweets" menu above, with a fireplace after the jump.

Finally, Ordering The Humble Pie At NYC's Standard Hotel Grill

As you may have noticed over the last year, we've got a serious thing for the newly-opened Standard Hotel NYC. We've done everything from sleep there to party there, and even walk the High Line below it.

But it was last week that we finally got a taste of the Standard when we had lunch at the Standard Grill, which only began serving meals other than dinner back in late August.

Now that the cold air has settled into New York and kicked out the fair weather friends and put the staff through the paces, we decided it was time to go and see if the grill really lived up to all the hype.

What's On The Block at the Standard Downtown LA?

We continue our What's On The Block: Los Angeles Edition by heading downtown.

So far this week, we’ve taken you to Santa Monica, the Sunset Strip and Beverly Hills, so we thought we’d end our Los Angeles What’s On The Block series with one of our downtown haunts, The Standard.

Sure, there are newer hotels in the area, but we keep coming back to this Andre Balazs property thanks, in no small part, to its central location in the heart of the downtown. At least, the part of downtown that doesn’t get too scary after dark.

Let’s start right behind the hotel at the LA Public Library and Park. The Central Library, which opened in 1926, is a bona fide Los Angeles landmark. Learn more about the architecture and notable art works of the building on a Docent Tour (our favorites are the scary fairy tale sculptures in the children’s court). Try not to get hit by a skateboarder as you cross the little park for a luxe lunch on the patio at Café Pinot.

The Standard's Boom Boom Room Will Now Be Called QT (As In The Old Hotel)

Go To The Hotel's Web

The Standard New York's exclusive 18th floor bar hasn't even officially opened and yet it's already changing its name. Apparently, the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco has sent the club a Cease and Desist letter for using its name (Type in Boom Boom Room in Google and this club comes up first.)

While we weren't in love with the name Boom Boom Room (we always started singing the song, "Boom, Boom let's go back to my room so we can do it all night and you can make me feel right" whenever we heard it), we like QT even less. BlackBook has the scoop on what QT stands for (on the Quiet) but to us, QT will always be Andre Balazs' boutique dorm hotel in Times Square that is now known as Roommate Grace.

Rachel Zoe Switches Her New York Hotel Loyalty

September 30, 2009 at 4:03 PM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

Alright, we'll admit it: we are totally addicted to the Bravo Show The Rachel Zoe Project, which follows top Hollywood stylist Rachel Zoe through runway shows in New York, award show fittings in LA, and everywhere in between. In the first season, Rachel famously occupied the penthouse at the 60 Thompson hotel in the Soho neighborhood of New York City.

When the Thompson LES opened, we knew that it was only a matter of time before Rachel Zoe was calling it "bananas" and making it her new headquarters—as she did in the second season during New York Fashion Week. Her husband Rodger her assistants Taylor and Brad all agreed that the view from the LES' penthouse was very impressive, as was the whole space.

So now you can imagine our surprise to discover that Rachel Zoe has decamped to The Standard.

The Raleigh Hotel Gets Dumped By Andre Balazs

The Raleigh Hotel in South Beach probably won't be getting any more visits from its hunky hotelier, Andre Balazs. The Miami Herald reports that Balazs is close to selling the hotel in favor of doing more Standard-brand positioning. And the sale is nearly done:

The New York hotelier behind The Standard hotel chain said he has a buyer for the 104-room Raleigh and that both sides are all but agreed to a price. He expects the deal to become official within four weeks.

``We've accomplished what we wanted to,'' Balazs said of his seven years with the Raleigh, 1775 Collins Ave., a favorite stop for celebrities and local hipsters.

And while Balazs recently sold off The Standard Miami, his company continues to manage the property--something he is not interested in doing with The Raleigh. But he will take the cash from the sale and start investing it in the Caribbean. So will the Maison Tropicale finally see the light of day? We hope so.
