Scoping out Andre Balazs' Future Standard Hotel London

With news having come down the wire that Andre Balazs will grace London with its own Standard Hotel, we had to head over to the city’s King’s Cross area to have a look ourselves. Smack in the middle of one of the city’s largest construction and regeneration projects, the former Camden Town Hall Annexe site (above) doesn’t bring a lot of aesthetic desirability to the table in its current form.

EstateGazette previously referred to “refurbishment” and “additional floors” being proposed, which could mean the existing structure will be used as a base. The additional floors are likely to upset some people, with debate about height restrictions for the building and in the area going back as far as two years. Nothing on or around the building indicates its future as a Standard Hotel at this point, aside from notices that the Camden council is moving. Initial information indicates it will take at least two years to redevelop the building.

At Long Last, Andre Balazs Will Open a Standard Hotel in London

June 10, 2014 at 4:25 PM | by | Comments (0)

The Chiltern Firehouse in London has no real rooms open but it's restaurant has already been declared a success. (If you can count Lindsay Lohan dropping by every night a success). So it's not surprising that working off of the Chiltern's good vibes, hotelier Andre Balazs is now planning a Standard Hotel for Londontown.

EsatesGazette.co.uk has the full scoop:

André Balazs Properties is partnering with Crosstree Real Estate Partners to convert the 150,000 sq ft Camden town hall annexe, WC1, and open the first Standard Hotel outside the US.

Balazs has entered an exclusivity agreement with Crosstree to open a circa 250-bedroom hotel – its sixth Standard – on the site of the former council offices.

Now this is exciting. Because it might mean that we could actually stay in the Standard whereas the Chiltern operates a bit like Balazs' ultra-exclusive Mercer Hotel in Soho, NYC. And because it's a Standard, we can also expect a cool F&B and possibly a rooftop bar. We're also loving the convenient location across from King's Cross St Pancras Station.

We just hope the security team gets a stern talking too about releasing elevator footage of celebrities.

Someone in Hotel Surveillance is Now Looking for a New Job

May 15, 2014 at 9:09 AM | by | Comments (0)

Your elevator shenanigans at The Standard New York are safe once again.

According to the Washington Post, The Standard Hotel has identified and fired the person who sold the elevator surveillance video of Solange beating up Jay-Z last week. Word is TMZ bought the video for a reported $250,000.

The hotel hasn't named the person (darnit) which only fuels our new theory that Beyonce leaked the footage because she was pissed at Solange for beating up her man. But drunk in revenge conspiracies aside, The Standard also said they would turn over "all available information to criminal authorities.” It's safe to say this person will never work in hotels again. So spend that $250,000 quick!

Also, whoever you are, The Dorchester Collection thanks you very much for taking the heat off them for a little bit.

The Standard Hotel Gives a Statement About the Solange & Jay-Z Surveillance Tape

The Standard Hotel in NYC came under fire yesterday after the surveillance footage of Solange slugging her brother-in-law Jay-Z was sold released to TMZ. And they should be feeling the heat. Are elevator rides no longer sacred?

But we digress. Apparently, the hotel has released this statement to the media and as we suspected, they are cleaning house when it comes to their surveillance team.

"We are investigating with the utmost urgency the circumstances surrounding the situation and, as is our customary practice, will discipline and prosecute the individuals involved to our fullest capacity."

Meanwhile, every hotel that caters to celebrities (and non-celebs!) better redo their security and surveillance contracts.

Did Someone at The Standard Hotel Sell The Surveillance Footage of Solange Attacking Jay-Z?

Celebrities are just like us! Their sisters try to beat up their husbands in hotel elevators!

Just when we thought Beyonce and Jay-Z had the most amazing drunk in love sort of fabulous life, comes this surveillance footage of B's sister, Solange, hitting and kicking Jay-Z in the elevator at The Standard High Line Hotel after the glamorous Met Gala last week while Beyonce stands by.

Who knows what set Solange off but what has set us off is that it looks like someone at The Standard Hotel decided to sell this footage to TMZ. Um, aren't hotels supposed to protect their guests' privacy? Especially those of such high-profile guests like Beyonce and Jay-Z? Fun fact: Beyonce shot one of her recent music videos at the hotel last year.

Of course, it would be different if a crime was committed in the elevator and the police released the footage to help with the investigation but we don't think smacking your brother-in-law is punishable by law (we could be wrong!)

The Paris Review is Looking for a Writer to Shack Up at The Standard East Village

Have you got a book to finish writing but can't quite find the right setting to do it in? Consider The Standard East Village.

Once again, the hotel and The Paris Review have partnered up to put a lucky novelist up in a queen room room for three weeks this July (they did a similar stint in January.) The guest/writer will also get daily continental breakfast and unlimited coffee. Alas, you still need to put down a credit card for incidentals.

There are a few other caveats--namely, you must already have a book under contract with a publishing house (not your own self-pub shop) and you need to have at least a description and some sample pages of the project to show before the May 1 application deadline. But still, three weeks in Cooper Square, totally gratis? Sigh. If only we started shopping our hotel blogging memoirs sooner.

Not a writer, but still want to spend a night at the Standard East Village? Rates start at $375 a night in July.

Where Did Beyonce Shoot One of 17 New Music Videos?

The Standard High Line of course.

The hotel's resident "guest," Stan D'Arde, blogged about meeting Queen B in the hallway (or so he says) while she was shooting the music video. Here's how the imaginary meet-up went down:

A few weeks back after a long night at The Top of The Standard, I was heading down to my room to see what was left in my mini-bar and maybe try to get some sleep. When I turned the corner from the elevator bank, I came face to face with Beyoncé and a camera crew…

ME: “Hey, B!”
B: “Hey, Boo!”
ME: “What are you doing?”
B: “Shooting a music video.”
ME: “You never told me.”
B: “I know!”
ME: “Carry on, B. Carry on.”

The whole thing seemed very mysterious, but I trusted her.

That music video turned out to be "Rocket" one of 17 videos she dropped suddenly last night along with her new album, titled, "Beyoncé." Of course. Now, if only we could get other Standard guests to replicate the Beyoncé pose during their stay….cue viral internet meme sensation in 5, 4, 3, 2….

In what may be the coolest writer residency program we've ever heard of, The Paris Review is teaming up with the Standard East Village to offer two lucky scribes three weeks at the hotel to finish their manuscript.

The residency, named the The Standard x Paris Review, will run in January and again in July and is open to writers of prose or poetry, fiction or nonfiction. In addition to their own room, writers will get a daily continental breakfast (which is actually a, ahem, standard right now anyway while the hotel is undergoing renovations) and as much coffee as required to get the creative juices flowing. The hotel expects the writer to stay alone in their room; "within reason" they say, leaving the door open for the occasional hookup.

The Standard East Village has been working hard on eradicating all traces of the old Cooper Square Hotel, hiring a new chef, building a new restaurant and reconfiguring the ground floor.

Yet even though we thought the work would be done by now a tipster who rolled by the hotel last week said a lot of the lobby area was under construction. However, there is a brand-new and very lovely garden open by the side entrance, complete with Standard cruiser bikes and the upside down Standard sign.

5 Hotels In Lower Manhattan For River Gazing

June 18, 2013 at 10:03 AM | by | Comments (0)

For most of us, we're just happy that our hotel room in Manhattan doesn't look out onto a brick wall. But for those of you who are particular about your views, we've rounded up the best hotels in lower Manhattan for river gazing. And no, you don't have to spend a fortune to do it, which is another reason to consider downtown versus uptown when planning your stay.

5 SCENIC WATERFRONT HOTELS IN LOWER MANHATTAN

1. It's all about the views at Ritz-Carlton Battery Park, which also took quite a beating during Hurricane Sandy (everything's back to normal now, though). The 298-room hotel often gets overshadowed by its uptown counterparts (Ritz-Carlton New York Central Park, Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons New York), but actually this place outshines all of them put together when it comes to fresh sea breezes and plenty of open spaces around the hotel The rooms even come with telescopes!
Rates from $395/night.

Four more after the jump!
