Four Seasons San Francisco Now Has a Nissan LEAF Available for Guests

May 25, 2012 at 9:39 AM | by | Comment (1)

San Francisco's a pretty green town but when the U.S. Open golf tournament comes to town on June 11, the place will get even greener. And if you happen to be staying at the Four Seasons San Francisco, you just might be the greenest of them all thanks to the Nissan Leaf that's available for you to rent.

Booking the hotel's new Nissan LEAF package will get you a room at the hotel, two tickets to the California Academy of Arts and Sciences, breakfast for two at the Seasons restaurants and complimentary rental of the Nissan LEAF. If you're not familiar with the LEAF, it's a completely electric vehicle which uses no gasoline and can go about a 100 miles on a single charge. And thanks to the LEAF, The Four Seasons is now the city's first and only hotel to have an electric vehicle rental program as well as charging station.

The iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco will 75-years old on May 27 and the city is going all out to celebrate the milestone from a fireworks cruise, to a dance festival and lots of art and photography exhibits.

And of course, San Fran hotels are getting in on the action, offering special bridge anniversary packages--typically at regular room rates but with some bridge memorabilia thrown in.

But at the Hotel Palomar San Francisco, it's just one special room that's celebrating the bridge--The Golden Gate Suite.

Room 512 was specially designed to commemorate the bridge's anniversary and the nightstand and coffee table were fashioned out reclaimed steel from the bridge by local artist Richard Bulan. Guests who stay in the suite are treated to a complimentary Golden Gate cocktail from the hotel's Fifth Floor restaurant called Vermillion M.E.S. Those initials stand for the architects of the bridge--Irving Morrow, Charles Ellis and Joseph Strauss. The drink's hue is also orange in another nod to the bridge's rusty red color.

Viceroy Hotel Group is Heading to San Francisco

Fortunately, this room won't be around much longer.

Here's some very good news for the Viceroy Hotel Group---they've just nabbed a hotel in San Francisco.

The group has just been selected as the operator for Hotel Milano, a 108-room hotel near the Moscone Convention Center. (The hotel is owned by Pebblebrook Hotel Trust, who owns two other properties that Viceroy manages--The Delfina in Santa Monica and the Viceroy Miami.)

The hotel will undergo a much-needed renovation later this year including guest rooms (thank god!), common areas and the restaurant but it will keep its name and will be relaunched as one of Viceroy's "Urban Retreat" hotels.

With the opening of the Inn at The Presidio earlier this month and now this news about the Hotel Milano, it looks like things might be picking up in San Francisco once again after several years of quiet. Who will be next? (If you've got a hint, let us know!)

There's Still Time for Some Spring Break Fun

March 29, 2012 at 12:04 PM | by | Comments (0)

The Sun Palace, Cancun

We at HotelChatter know Spring Break exists even though our school days are long gone. March and April seems to be the months when kids from elementary to college age are let loose upon the world, meaning vacation time for some lucky adults too. So you know what? We decided we want in, too. There’s still enough time to book a getaway, so with that in mind, here are some vernal equinox escapes, in case you want to get on the bandwagon.

HotelChatter decided to stop by the Inn at the Presidio for a quick peek before its official April 1 opening. We were delighted to discover the historic hotel is actually in soft-opening (seems to be a hush hush deal), as a few guests were there during our visit last weekend. The full skinny on the hotel is in this post, so here’s a little hotel eye candy as well.

No joke, The Inn at The Presidio, the first hotel to open in San Francisco in about three years, will officially open on April 1 and reservations are now open!

The online booking system is a little wonky and rooms are sold-out for the hotel's first weekend but we did find rooms open on opening night for just $195 a night for a Forest Queen room. Kings rooms were going for $300 a night.

Those rates include continental breakfast and complimentary wine and cheese in the evening. But along with taxes, there is also a $6 nightly self-parking charge if you drive your car there as well as a mandatory 14 percent Park Fee since the hotel is located in the Presidio, a national park.

Interested in being one of the first to sleep at the Inn at the Presidio? You better book now. The hotel which was created out of the historic Pershing Hall (where bachelor military brass once lived) has just 22 rooms. For more on what's inside the Inn, read our last story here. And stay tuned for a sneak peek! Wink, wink.

Which Hotels Are Doing Good For Heart Disease Awareness Month?

February 3, 2012 at 10:50 AM | by | Comments (0)

It's National Wear Red Day, and across the country, the American Heart Association is urging everyone to raise awareness about women's heart disease by wearing the color red. And since we've already done our work pointing out the best Valentine's Day hotels (for both NYC and Miami), here's a look at some heart-conscious hotel efforts happening this month.

First stop: Kimpton's Hotel Palomar, which is offering a new gluten-free minibar to provide guests with healthy snacks when they get back to their rooms. Our favorite item? The KIND fruit and nut bars, which we always make a point of slipping into our carry-on whenever we travel. So fruity and chewy and delicious! The minibar will also be stocked with Izze soda, Glutino pretzel twists, and Lundberg rice chips.

Finally, there's a pulse on the hotel scene of San Francisco. News is out today that The Inn at The Presidio will open in April, making it the only new hotel to open in EssEff in all of 2012.

The 22-room hotel will be created out of the historic Pershing Hall which was previously where all the bachelor military brass stayed when the Presidio was a functioning military post. (Now it's an urban national park as well as a National Historic Landmark District.)

Seventeen of those rooms will be one-bedroom suites but all guests will have access to the expansive front porch with rocking chairs, a landscaped terrace with a fire pit, a guest lounge, complimentary continental breakfast, wine and cheese receptions in the afternoon and the glorious bay views.

With the Presidio being such a historic spot, the Inn will certainly pay homage to the military days of yore. From the press release:

In the ever-expanding universe of Twitter, there is one particular trend @HotelChatter happens to quite enjoy: candid hotel photos. These Twitpics range from stunning views to anti-views to celebrity tomfoolery and everything in between. And we can't get enough of 'em! Every Monday, we will feature one "Twitpic of the Week" to commemorate our favorite hotel-themed snapshot. Got a favorite of your own? Want to show off your sweet suite? Send it in!

We caught Conan O'Brien with his goofy hotel cookie last week, so we thought we'd change the mood today with something a little more...picturesque. @dens, also known as Dennis Crowley, co-founder of Foursquare, tweeted this shot from his room at San Francisco's Parc 55 Wyndham last Wednesday morning, capturing some brilliantly illuminated boats out in the bay.

HotelTonight Bounces Back With New String of 'Getaway' Destinations

September 30, 2011 at 9:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

Hey Boston, wanna go here?

Amidst all the talk about Priceline's new last-minute mobile booking feature, Tonight-Only Deals, comes an announcement that rival HotelTonight will be adding new "getaway" destinations for four major cities. This should be particularly gratifying to those who feel slighted by the ever-soaring rates afflicting key cities like New York and San Francisco.

Under the listings for each of the four cities (Boston, San Francisco, New York and DC), you'll now find a separate listing for that city's "getaway" destinations. Want to go antiquing in Martha's Vineyard? No problem. Been itching to go wine tasting in Sonoma? Now's the time. Ready to shut out the world in a lodge in Coastal Maine? Done. These tucked-away spots are an over-worked, stressed-out city dweller's dream come true—mostly because they take the far-off fantasy of wanting to 'just get away for a night' and make it a solid reality.

OK, Priceline. Your move.

EuroCheapo: Not Strictly Euro But Still Cheapo

September 20, 2011 at 9:25 AM | by | Comments (0)

The other week we helped out a tech reporter looking for a hotel room under $200 in San Francisco's Union Square.

But if you're in need of a hotel room for even cheaper (like under $100 or even under $50) then consider the ultimate cheap experts--EuroCheapo.com which just launched a San Francisco budget hotel guide. Yes, despite their name EuroCheapo has branched out beyond Europe to New York City (that guide launched a few years ago) and now to EssEff.

All of the 25 recommended hotels (including B&Bs and hostels) in EuroCheapo's San Fran hotel guide are not just wallet-friendly but they've been snuffed out by the site's editors with in-depth write-ups and best of all, their own photos so you can see just exactly what you're getting for your $100 or less.
