Here We Go Again: The Regent Bal Harbour Is No Longer a Regent Hotel
| June 24, 2009 at 1:36 PM | 3 Comments

The Regent Hotels has a problem picking and sticking with hotels. Today, tipsters sent us word that the hotel management company has effectively stopped managing the The Regent Bal Harbour in Florida. The hotel will now be known as The Bal Harbour Hotel.
The Regent brand dismissal is actually due to the bankruptcy of the hotel's owner, WCI Communities. Regent Hotels has put forth this statement:
Regent Hotels & Resorts is proud of its tenure managing The Regent Bal Harbour since its opening, having achieved strong positioning in the South Florida luxury hotel market. For example, the hotel was ranked by Travel + Leisure magazine among "15 hotels to watch" in the most recent "World's Best" issue. The brand is continuing to expand globally, including the opening of eight new hotels over the next three years in locations that span the world, from Puerto Rico to the Maldives.

The Predictably Romantic Regent Maldives Probably Opening Soon
| June 8, 2009 at 10:10 AM | 0 Comments

The Regent Maldives might've been slated to open in 2008, and then the first quarter of 2009, but we're kind of used to the Regent Hotels people rescheduling their opening dates. Now we're hearing late 2009 for the Maldives and some rumors are going solidly for December 1, 2009. We've gotta say, though, that this place looks like it'll be worth the wait.
Of course, it's easy to look gorgeous when your hotel is made up of 50 luxury villas on a private coral island. To be precise, the Regent Maldives is on Maalefushi Island, eight hectares of tropical plants surrounded by white beaches. That's easy to love.
Of these 50 villas, 23 of them are planted on the beach and 27 of them are overwater villas; they've all got private plunge pools, indoor and outdoor showers and vast wooden decks where you can enjoy the view. But what really tweaks our romantic bones is this:
Small uninhabited islands near The Regent Maldives can be arranged as the perfect venue for romantic dinners or private parties with bonfires, barbecues and traditional Maldivian drum music under the stars.
No word yet on opening rates (we're guessing they won't be too cheap) and their website isn't allowing bookings yet. Is that because December's too far away or they're not quite sure they'll be ready? We don't really mind, we're just waiting to hang out on our special uninhabited island.

If You Play Your Cards Right, You Can Score 20% Off Regent Hotels
| May 12, 2009 at 9:51 AM | 0 Comments

The Regent Hotels chain has a deal going for anyone visiting their three European hotels: the Regent Esplanade Zagreb in Croatia, the Regent Berlin in Germany or the Regent Grand Hotel Bordeaux in France (they're adding a fourth hotel in Dubrovnik next year).
It's not a mindblowingly-fantastic deal compared to some of the discounts out there, but it's better than nothing: if you stay two nights including a Saturday, or three nights including a Tuesday or a Wednesday, then you'll get a 20% discount on your room rate. You can book this deal through til the end of August for stays all the way through 2009.
This is clearly a deal targeted at filling gaps in their booking schedules and while we think it's a bit complicated to plan your trip around the nights hotels are typically emptiest, these three hotels are worth trying. In Bordeaux you can get really fresh lobster, the Berlin Regent is well-located and fancy-looking and the Zagreb location earned some great feedback from one of our readers well, apart from the complaint that the hotel toiletries seem a bit male-oriented. Ladies might need to use some of cash left over from the 20% savings to get some prettier-smelling stuff instead.

Regent Breaks Ground in Puerto Rico; Will They Break the Deal, Too?
| October 13, 2008 at 10:30 AM | 0 Comments

Regent Hotels broke ground last week at what will (probably) be the Regent Palmas del Mar Puerto Rico come December 2011.
We say probably because we haven't got a whole lotta faith left in Regent Hotels and their properties--remember they palmed a few places off to Vincci Hotels and Four Seasons and didn't even finish building the Boston Battery Wharf property before they dropped out of the deal.
Assuming Regent sees this one through, the Regent Palmas del Mar will be a 150-roomer about half an hour away from San Juan. It'll have plenty of the usual resort trappings and included in the spa complex will be five over-water spa suites, which we like the sound of. And you'll be able to get married there with a chapel and ballroom just ready for vows. But be warned, anything could happen between now and December 2011.

It's Official :: Fairmont Battery Wharf to Open in December
| September 18, 2008 at 12:25 PM | 0 Comments
Earlier this week, we revealed (courtesy of a lovely tipster) that Fairmont had snatched up the Boston Battery Wharf property that Regent Hotels had dropped.
Good news: we just got the final word from Fairmont that they've officially taken over the property and have scheduled it to be open and ready to go as soon as this coming December.
Word from the official press release:
The contemporary hotel will feature 150 elegantly appointed guestrooms, including Fairmont Gold, the brand's exclusive lifestyle offering featuring warm and personalized service with amenities such as private reception and a comfortable guest lounge. Guestrooms will be spacious with a large work area, marble baths and all of the technology features consistent with five-diamond standards. The décor will be residential in style and inspired by the property's harbor side location.
And yes, Fairmont is keeping with Regent's plans to feature a restaurant "designed with guidance by" acclaimed chef Guy Martin. Thanks for saving the day here, Fairmont.

Fairmont Hotels Will Take Over The Regent Battery Wharf Hotel in Boston
| September 15, 2008 at 4:42 PM | 0 Comments

Remember way back to the beginning of Summer when Regent Hotels totally dropped out of their Battery Wharf Hotel in Boston before the place even opened, leaving residential owners and future hotel guests totally screwed out of the Regent experience?
Well, Fairmont Hotels has come and saved the day. Reader Kal B let us know that the Canadian chain has snapped up the Battery Wharf hotel. (See this page, under "In Development".)
We are hoping that Fairmont will keep whatever was originally planned for the hotel like the 18,000-square-foot Guerlain spa and the 80-seat Sensing restaurant from acclaimed chef Guy Martin. But all that is definitely still be worked on and we have no idea when it will actually open, other than the ambigous date of "2008."

Regent Bal Harbour Offsets Sky-High Rates With Money For Airfare
| August 15, 2008 at 9:45 AM | 0 Comments
The recently-opened super-luxe Regent Bal Harbour -- whose opening rates of $775 made us shake in our Louboutins (or Louboutin knockoffs, as the case may be) -- is tryin' to throw us a bone on airfare, presumably so we can spend more money on our room or even all the fantastic shopping in the Bal Harbour area once we arrive.
See all the breakdowns after the jump.

If You're Going to Splurge at the Regent Bordeaux, You Might as Well Order the Lobster
| July 22, 2008 at 10:00 AM | 0 Comments
We've heard there's been a "culinary renaissance" going on in Bordeaux, Paris' vino-licious sister, as "new Bordelais chefs have been invigorating the culinary scene."
Meanwhile, the Regent Grand Hotel Bordeaux, has been busy invigorating the hotel scene as the first amd only five-star hotel to open its doors in Bordeaux.
Inside the hotel, the 48-seat Le Pressoir d'Argent, serving up haute seafood cuisine, and has already established a reputation for an elaborate lobster dish that may be worth the trip:
This intricate menu item involves the restaurant's namesake silver lobster press, one of only five in the world. An elaborate gastronomic production, a choice Breton lobster is first presented live, then brought to the kitchen to be pan-cooked and served atop fresh pasta. The dish is completed in the dining room. The lobster's shell is compressed in the elegant silver press, using the lobster's essence to create a reduction to accompany the dish.
Oh lord! Maybe you'll hit the wine bottle before this whole ordeal so you don't have to think much about seeing him alive before he gets in your belly.

Room With a Killer View: Regent Esplanade Zagreb is Picture Perfect
| June 19, 2008 at 9:00 AM | 0 Comments
We are suckers for a room with a killer view. We find that we are even more likely to forgive some minor hotel inconveniences if we can stare out the window at something pretty--yeah we are that shallow. Let's help out our fellow hotel mavens by uploading rooms with killer views to the HotelChatter/Flickr photo pool, or by sending the photo along to us. We will feature our favorites in this space from time to time. Remember to tell us the name of the hotel and the room number of the hot view.

We are definitely intrigued by the Regent Esplanade Hotel in Zagreb, Croatia, because HotelChatter readers keep mentioning it to us. Last year it was Maureen's review--very glowing, apart from a complaint about male-oriented toiletries--and now we're thanking mhodges for dropping a killer view from the Regent Esplanade into our Flickr pool.
Yep, this picture-perfect view was taken from a hotel room window of the Regent Esplanade, which actually belongs to the Radisson SAS chain, but originally dates back to 1925 when it serviced passengers arriving on the Orient Express. These days it's still just as regent but not exorbitant--nightly rates for double rooms range from 150 - 300 (US$230-$460).

WTF Hotel News :: Regent Hotels Drops Another One; Backs Out of Boston Property Before Opening
| June 11, 2008 at 3:20 PM | 0 Comments

Amazingly, Regent Hotels have done it again--that is, dropped out of another hotel project. This time its the Regent at Battery Wharf in Boston that was dropped.
The Boston Globe reports:
In a joint statement, Regent and Battery Wharf said they have "entered into discussions to terminate" their agreement, and blamed "philosophical differences on strategies for the project." Regent spokesman Thomas Polski, declined to comment further.
Ah yes...the old "philosophical differences". Otherwise known in these parts as money.
The hotel will now be known as The Battery Wharf Hotel and will not open until sometime in the Fall. The hotel also has 105 condo units attached which are priced from $1 million to $4 million but only 22 have been sold. Now the hotel must find a new comparable luxury hotel operator to install in the place.
Regent also recently backed out of a management agreement with the Regent South Beach after about a year. We even asked back then if they would drop out of the Boston project after a year too. But we guess they decided to jump ship earlier.
Thanks TonyT for the tip!

Boston Foodies: Get Excited for the New Regent Hotel at Battery Wharf
| May 27, 2008 at 9:00 AM | 2 Comments

We love any hotel that puts us in close proximity to great restaurants--especially of the Italian variety--which is largely the reason we're eagerly awaiting the debut of The Regent at Battery Wharf.
Located in Boston's North End, a.k.a. the city's Little Italy, the 150-room hotel is set to open in July with 26 suites and an 18,000-square-foot Guerlain spa. Three-star Michelin chef Guy Martin helms the 80-seat Sensing Restaurant; plus the area is home to a host of ethnically diverse eateries.
But is that the hotel's only draw? Boston news outlets are more focused on the mixed-use project's 104 condo units, which cost upwards of $1 million for 900- to 2,500-square-feet of space. Even the little information available about the hotel on Regent's web site notes that the property is located in a "residential neighborhood," within walking distance to Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the Financial District and TD Banknorth Garden, to which we say, eh, give us something closer to Downtown Crossing.
If you've got the scoop on other area enticements, let us know, because we would hate to be outted for the gluttons that we are.

A Fuddy Duddy's Choice Hotel in Berlin, The Regent
| May 16, 2008 at 10:15 AM | 0 Comments

For those of you who want a more traditional hotel in Berlin rather than a trippy experience like the Propeller Island City Lodge, consider the Regent Berlin. It sounds regal and it looks it too.
With one of those fancy-looking chandelier and marble lobbies, you can guess it's going to be a bit pricey and considering the fact that accommodation prices in Berlin are usually really reasonable, a starting rate of 315 (US$490) for the basic "superior guest room" is quite a lot.
Is it worth it? The location at the Gendarmenmarkt is pretty classic Berlin, and you can walk to many of the best spots of the city. Service is nearly always impeccable and the rooms are both large and full of neat stuff.
Perhaps the only complaint we'd have is that it all sounds a little bit too formal and even a bit on the pretentious side. In a city as fun as Berlin, that might not be exactly what you're looking for; but if you are happy with luxury and a regal feel, then the Regent is what you need.
