Get Ping Pong, Potent Cocktails and Snacks at Seattle's Red Lion Hotel

TGIF! It’s no secret we at HC love hotel rooftops, inventive cocktails, and inexpensive happy hours (though we’re fond of non-boozy afternoon tea, too!). Still, how awesome is it when we get a trifecta of all three, namely Frolik Kitchen + Cocktails--the new restaurant and bar just opened at the Red Lion Hotel in Downtown Seattle?
Set on the fifth floor of the Fifth Avenue building above the bustling streets below, Frolik guests are in for a treat when they come to the city’s largest outdoor deck—4,000 square-feet worth—and indulge in the all-evening happy hour (from 4-10pm). One can choose to chill by the firewall or the communal fireplace table, all while enjoying the Puget Sound views and bumping music.
People pretend to come for the drinks, but we know better. What they really want? A hearty game of ping-pong and shuffleboard. Don’t do a double take, there’s a reason why people get aggressive with that paddle and tiny ball, and Frolik knows it.
That's why they're well prepared for sports and serious sipping.

We're Feeling A Bit Catty About Red Lion Hotels' New Leo Collection

When was the last time you stayed at a Red Lion Hotel? It seems the hotel gets a bad rap of the Super 8 and Motel 6 variety, though we seem to see plenty of good reviews overall. A Hilton it's not, but it'll do in a pinch. Well, it looks like the company wants to up its game and add a third brand of hotels to their corporation called the Leo Hotel Collection. The second sister is Red Lion Inn & Suites.
Each Leo hotel will be an independently owned franchise property that is “unique, boutique and/or historic,” according to Red Lion HQ. At first we thought this meant they were going to roll out a bunch of funky new properties, all with a different look a la Pasadena Quality Inn—but that doesn’t seem to be the case. It appears more like an opportunity for already established hotels to join up with the brand, and slap the Leo name on their doors.
We worry.

Hotel Loyalty Programs Are Not Just For People

We just adore our doggies and kitties, so how cool is that the Red Lion chain has started up a pet loyalty program?
To start with, Red Lion is now offering no extra charges for your pet to stay in your room with you at any of its hotels that's the suitably-named "Pets Stay Free" program. But your dog or cat can also earn 500 points per stay if his or her owner (that would be you) enrolls in the Red Lion R&R Club, and once they save up some points, your four-legged family member can redeem the points for "desirable gift redemption options just for pets."
On top of that, any pet which stays before the end of September gets to enter a drawing to win a year's worth of pet food for free. Red Lion hotels think that the recession will keep people traveling closer to home by car just the kind of vacation you want to bring your pet on so everyone will be a-checkin' into their place. Well, actually their press release says the dogs and cats will be begging their owners to book into a Red Lion, but we're not convinced that our pets actually understand the concept of hotel reservations. Unless said reservations somehow involve bacon.

It's Your Own Private Idaho at Templin Red Lion

Okay, we haven't celebrated the summer equinox yet but aren't you wondering what you'll do over July 4th weekend? Ever been to Idaho in the summer? You probably thought it was just for snowbirds, potato heads and indoor waterparks right? Wrong.
Besides powdery slopes, complex carbs and wet screaming kids, Idaho can be a fun summertime getaway. Casinos, canoeing and river rafting, ghost town visits, rodeos, paragliding and lots more, including a pretty good nightlife. Seriously, Idaho has a nightlife. You learn something new everyday.
