Hurrah! The NYLO Warwick is Reopening on Monday

It took more than a year after much of the hotel was damaged during massive floods but finally, after extensive renovations, the NYLO Hotel in Warwick, Rhode Island will be open once again this Monday. Business Week reports:
Susan Shaw, the new general manager, said the 163-room hotel will open with between 35 and 40 employees, down from 60 at the time of the flood. It will add employees and should reach full capacity by early next year, she said. It will look much like it did before it closed. The restaurant will offer a new menu and have what Shaw described as a more "mellow" feel.
Heading to Warwick and want to give the NYLO some much-needed love? Glass king loft rooms start at $149 a night on Monday and yes, that includes free WiFi. Oh and a cute little toy!

NYLO Goes Back to Dallas for Thirds

It's been a long time since we've heard some expansion news from NYLO Hotels so we were uber-excited to hear that the company is finally opening up another new location. However, we're slightly bummed it's in the Dallas-Forth Worth area...again. (There's already NYLO Plano and NYLO Las Colinas).
Nevertheless, it's definitely their most exciting property yet.
The NYLO Dallas South Side will open just three blocks from the Dallas Convention Center and adjacent to the upcoming 1,000-room Omni Dallas Convention Center Hotel (the developer of this NYLO is also developing the Omni.)
The hotel will have five stories with a total of 76 rooms, a destination roof top bar and pool, a lobby bar and restaurant and fingers crossed, a LEED Silver Certification (helped along by NYLO's "Everything Green" eco-friendly practices policy.)

NYLO May Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Kansas for Its Next Hotel
Where: United States
NYLO Plano at Legacy
Start-up hotel chain NYLO Hotels must have taken Dorothy's words to heart when she said, "There's no place like home." A tipster told us that NYLO is looking to expand into Kansas. The company has its eye on Wichita for its next project.
According to our source, it will be a 125-bed hotel tailored to business travelers and entertainment consumers. The as-yet-unnamed hotel will be part of a mixed-use commercial development set on 33 acres. The hotel rooms will resemble loft apartments, the signature of NYLO's other properties.

NYLO Warwick Still Closed After Rhode Island Flooding

Even in a year of earthquakes and snowicanes, the recent flooding in Rhode Island and other parts of the Northeast was some of the worst weather the region has seen. And for the still-new NYLO Warick the results were very bad indeed.
Two weeks after the storm, the hotel is still closed and may stay that way for up to four months, according to Hotels magazine. Local news channels in Warwick reported that two feet of water flooded the first floor of the hotel, which was being ripped out and replaced by clean-up crews repairing the damage.

NYLO Las Colinas' First Baby Steps Appear to Be Steady
NYLO Las Colinas opened its doors in July with a lovely ribbon-cutting ceremony, after lots of anticipation and a whole lotta slowdown with the chain's expansion. Better late than never on this one, we suppose the NYLO chain has been a fave of HC's since the first property opened in Dallas in winter of 2007, and its middle child was born in Warwick, Rhode Island and now Irving, Texas (Las Colinas) boasts the third property in the still-young chain.
So, how does property number three appear to be faring? So far, so good at least according to the lone review of the place on TripAdvisor.

WTF: NYLO vs. Wynn Re: XS
Okay, kiddies. Can't we all agree that suing each other over the gimmicky use of two consonants is a little...excessive? Or should we say "XS-ive"?
According to local Las Vegas news station KVBC, Wynn Resorts filed a lawsuit on Monday in U.S. District Court against NYLO Hotels. The dispute? Who has the rights to "XS." Yes, really.
Reportedly, NYLO had "asserted rights" to the trademark "XS" perhaps a marketing tie-in for their yet-to-happen XP brand? and had "offered to let Wynn pay a licensing fee to use the name for the club at Encore." How generous of them! The suit Wynn is filing against NYLO says its use of "XS" doesn't infringe on anyone's rights.
We're not going to take anyone's side here, but we only have this to add: let's not forget that neither one of these hotel companies had this cutesy "XS" idea first. Just saying.

The World Gets Its Third NYLO Hotel Today
Ah, yes, it is Monday, we're all in a poopy mood but what a glorious day! NYLO number three opens today!
Today marks the grand opening of NYLO Las Colinas (in Irving, Texas just outside of Dallas) and, according to the website, it seems you can even rest your head on one of those brand new NYLO pillows this evening: the hotel's website is showing availability starting at $139.00 per night (a special opening rate, down from what appears to be the standard rate of $159).
Or, if you're up for it, you can book yourself a sweet themed Dallas package. For $186, the Explore Dallas gives you tickets to the zoo, museum or aquarium and a 4:00 pm checkout; For $176, the Fit For You package includes a free breakfast, transportation to and daily passes for LA Fitness.
Check out other package rates and availability here; a big ol' congrats to NYLO for getting their third hotel open, even if they're a little bit behind schedule on the whole expansion thing. Slow and steady wins the race!

Brands Born in the Recession: Where Are They Now?

It's no secret that the economy has had a massive impact on the hotel industry. Hotel openings have been delayed; construction has been halted on properties in development; jobs have been lost; room rates have been slashed but the last several years also saw a boom in the introduction of new brands and a handful of entirely new, supposedly game-changing segments (the "budget chic" pack, for example).
Naturally, with the introduction of each new brand came a wave of hype and some big, big expansion plans and then came the recession. Needless to say, those big plans changed.
Here's a look at the current state of some of those newer brands a progress report, if you will that outlines how many properties each brand had planned on when the concept was introduced, how many properties they've actually opened as of mid-2009, and, of course, how they're faring out there in the cold, brutal world.

The Newest NYLO is Gonna Be a Bit Greener

We were surprised when we heard the Dallas suburbs were getting another NYLO before anyone else, but we're also surprised (in a good way) to hear that the NYLO Dallas/Las Colinas (yes, that's the clumsy official name) is not only about to open, but is also going to be really green.
NYLO has signed a deal with TXU Energy which makes it the first hotel in the area to purchase 100% of their electricity from a certified renewable energy source. They've also been green during the building process: they used construction techniques which "reduced the need for excessive materials" (we hope they still used enough, though) and they've installed hi-tech electrical and plumbing systems which are aimed at lowering energy consumption.
They're also doing the "little green things" that add up to a lot: air-conditioning turns off automatically if you leave your room, and the preservative-free toiletries are provided in recycled bottles.
It's good to see things on track after NYLO Las Colinas had a setback last year when funding (and therefore, construction) slowed down for a while, but now they're ready to open soon. Book your $139 room for July 27 while you still can.

NYLO's Third Property Set to Open July 27
Good news! Our fave budget-chic brand, NYLO, is opening up its third property in Irving, Texas (Las Colinas in the Dallas area) on July 27th. The brand's expansion has been going pretty slowly since the first property in Plano, Texas opened up in December of '07, but we'll take what we can get here and remain hopeful that NYLO and their spinoff brand, XP, will pull through and keep opening up hotels as planned.
We dropped in on the NYLO site today and noticed NYLO Las Colinas is taking rezzies starting on July 27th (that's a Monday), and they're running a special opening rate promo with rates down as low as $139.00 until September 7 (when they'll go up to around $159-ish).
Check out the hotel (and the sweet-ass pool with an outdoor bar) here, and cross your fingers for no delays on this bad boy.

NYLO Ventures Into the Student Housing Business
What was your college dorm like? Er, sorry your "student housing"? Cinderblock walls, nasty communal bathrooms, anti-alcohol posters and construction-paper event-calendars peeling off the walls? Yeah, ours too.
But the kiddies these days are going to be getting some digs that are a total departure from the ol' vomit-colored carpet and stale corridors well, some of them, at least. Check this one out: NYLO Hotels (the still-tiny, budget-chic brand we all seem to heart around here) is venturing into the student housing biz.

Breaking: New Brands Not Growing As Quickly As Originally Planned
Remember when Aloft, NYLO, Element and Indigo were announced [Ed Note: wow, that early Aloft post makes us feel as nostalgic and wistful as our high school yearbook], back in simpler times when the insanely rapid expansion plans of the mid-priced hip hotel brands seemed only sorta-insanely rapid but still somewhat feasible?
Ah, those were the days...and those days are gone. A New York Times article ran today that spelled out just how much the growth of those new budgety brands has varied from those rather-hopeful initial goals due to the recession and its impact on travel.
NYLO, for instance, had always planned on a franchise model for growth but they'd planned to build and operate the first few hotels themselves and then franchise the rest, and had 40 franchises in the works when the brand first launched but now a rep told the Times that they'd be "lucky 30 hotels open by the end of 2011."
However, the NYLO exec still seemed to have high hopes for their spinoff XP brand, which he hopes, once the economy turns around, will be a little bit easier to "build and sell" than a NYLO-branded hotel because it is a limited-service brand, not a full-service hotel like NYLO.
