Shhh. There’s a new hotel – or hotel chain – gearing up to hit Manhattan, but it’s preparing under the radar. Why? Our best guess is that they don’t want any riff raff hearing about it.
Or any raff, at least. Riff is just fine – fitting, in fact. Because the chain will be called Riff Hotels, and the first property – opening next month – will be Riff Chelsea, a “musically-inspired” 44-room hotel at W30th St and 8th Avenue.
The creative theme is in its genes – formerly the Chelsea Star (indeed still the Chelsea Star for now – it’s remaining open, while being converted room by room, and will be officially rebranded in August), it was a pulling point for artists in the 1980s. Madonna stayed here, and
the hotel rumor has it that Lucky Star was inspired by the hotel.
The Chelsea Star looks pretty non-descript right now, but as the Riff, the hotel will be channeling the 80s: the lobby will house pictures of early New York Madonna by Richard Corman, there’ll be a performance space curated by artist collective Chashama, and rooms will be “retro-contemporary”, designed by Steed Hale, who worked on Studio 54. We don’t have pictures or even renderings yet, but you’ll need sunglasses at the ready if they’re anything like the hotel is promising:
Bold colors and eye-catching graphics will make every guest room different, with pop-art photography, edgy graphics, and bold, buzzy Jonathan Adler wallpaper.

Amsterdam is kickin’ ass and takin' names these days. It's just that simple. With the re-opening scheduled this year of the Rijksmuseum after a 10-year reno and the Van Gogh Museum after a much shorter reno, the 400th anniversary of the canals, and the re-opening of the Stedelijk modern art and design museum, the city’s hopping.
Hotels, it seems, have all been preparing for the buzz of 2013: the Hotel de l’Europe had major work done, the Andaz Amsterdam opened its doors, as did the Conservatorium Hotel. Earlier this week we also told you about the opening of The Waldorf Astoria expected in early 2014 so everyone's getting in on the act.
They say a picture speaks a thousand words so have a look at the Image Gallery to see what your next trip to Amsterdam might look like.

We're not haters or anything, but we've had to endure reruns and all types of holiday delays. And then we had to get back to work on the 2nd. Hell, some of us working stiffs didn't get much vaca at all. So, we're just wondering why these celebs still seem to be taking a break. Do they not have movies to shoot? Tracks to record?
OK!We admit it--from the pics we're seeing we're just jelly we're not in their spots. So we'll once again just live through them. And seethe from afar.
Madonna and her brood (including her 25-year-old boyfriend Brahim Zaibat) headed to the resort town of Gstaad, Switzerland, for New Year’s. It seems Anne Hathaway and new hubby Adam Shulman were around for the holidays, too. While the Material Mama spent time attempting to ski and bit the dust a few times, it seems 16-year Lourdes was smoother on the snowboard.
Madonna's brother, Christopher Ciccone, has literally written the book on becoming famous by association. And now that hype for his 2008 memoir has died down, he's moved onto the next logical step: shoes.
The Ciccone Collection is a Georgia O'Keeffe-inspired footwear line for men, women and children that debuted at London Fashion Week. There are rain boots, wingtips and sneakers. The collection will likely be sold in Nordstrom and Macy's. And if that alone didn't seem far-fetched enough, The Daily Beast reports that the Ciccone Collection brand will eventually expand to include clothing, accessories, home goods, and, yes, a Ciccone hotel.

While Madonna's entourage shacks up in the modern room of the hotel, she herself likes four magnificent, chandelier-dripping, silk-lined suites in the older section. In a sitting room larger than most apartments and with a view to the river Tagus, the Material Girl might work through some dance steps on the inlaid wood floors but her preferred sleeping suite is the Dom Manuel with the huge bed fitted with Armani sheets. We're not sure what other requests she has but we're sure she still has plenty.
Now, here's a little history lesson on the hotel that you might enjoy:

We would have thought that having the red carpet rolled out for you at every new five-star hotel you check into would preclude the need to make room adjustments. Except when you're Madonna, that is. It turns out the pop diva is pretty choosy about the look and feel of her room, and has a whole laundry list of items that need to be added to (or taken away from) the room. Before she even sets foot in it.
Want to find out how to Madonna-fy your room in three easy steps? Read on!
Madonna is now facing criticism for squandering money while she neglected to pay up the millions she pledged to Malawi, the homeland of her adopted children, David and Mercy James.
The money was supposed to fund schools, orphanages and hospitals, but Madge has been instead using her loot to store gym equipment in a hotel in the African country.
According to Daily Mail, the Material Girl's staff had to book two rooms in Malawi's most upscale hotel to store all of her fitness equipment for three years, just in case she ever returned to the country.
Madonna, sans bottoms, makes an appearance at the Sunset Tower Hotel with daughter Lourdes.
It's no contest that the hottest post-Oscars spot is the Vanity Fair bash at the Sunset Tower Hotel, an uber-exclusive party attended by A-listers like Madonna, Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal. But don't even think about sneaking in to the star-studded soiree.
Apparently, it's easier to get into Fort Knox than to crash the Sunset Tower Hotel party. After all, the highest security is needed when guests like Justin Bieber come with throngs of screaming, crazy tween fans.

Everyone's still buzzing about last night's Oscars, including the predictable winners, the red-carpet ups (tangerine-clad Jennifer Hudson) and downs (Melissa Leo's heavy doily dress). But the real thing to gossip about is what happened at the the after-party: Justin Bieber and his cougar Selena Gomez came out as a couple at a hotel bash. Twelve-year-olds everywhere are crying.
Earlier in the day, the Never Say Never star Bieber and Gomez stepped out at the St. Regis Monarch Beach, as documented by some totally overwhelmed fans. They were spotted in the lobby and were then bombarded by eager Biebers hoping to get pictures of the heartthrob while he was waiting for a car outside of the hotel.
The Dream Hotel is suddenly experiencing a bit of pop culture popularity. First, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills had their insufferable showdown at the hotel and now the hotel has received a visit from Madonna who brought her latest toy with her. And it dances!
Page Six reports:
Her Madgesty, 52, and dancer Brahim Zaibat, 24, were spotted at the Ava Penthouse Lounge at the Dream Hotel on Thursday night.
A source told us, "Madonna showed up to help celebrate her kabbalah teacher, Eithan Yardeni. But she brought some of her dancers, including Brahim. They hung out drinking Veuve Clicquot Rose until 1 a.m."
It's the endless summer of celebs in Paris!
We'll always have Paris...and Madonna to show us what the latest fashion trends are and for Fall 2010 it looks like wide-legged trousers are in. Madge (not so gracefully) modeled the new trend while exiting the Ritz Hotel on Place Vendome. She's been in France shooting "W.E." a biopic about the affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson.
Now, we know that Madonna and her brood are not slumming it in one of the hotel's regular rooms which start at 550€ a night. The question is--which one of the Prestige Suites is she staying in?
It looks like we weren't the only ones frothing at the mouth over the Diane von Fursternberg rooms at the Claridge's Hotel in London. At a party to celebrate the new rooms, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow "happily posed" for the cameras putting the rumors to rest that their "besties forever" relationship was over.
Also attending the celebration were DVF herself, Tom Ford, Victoria Beckham, fashion designer Valentino, Jimmy Choo's Tamara Mellon and supermodel Natalia Vodianova. Apparently not in attendance? The DVF rooms!
Marie Claire attended the party as did Grazia which was held in the hotel's ballroom with a pre-war theme, but no one snapped any pics of the rooms! We've been hounding the hotel's PR team and they keep telling us there are no photos just yet. Normally, we think begging is unattractive but screw it--please send us photos of the DVF rooms at Claridge's if you got 'em!
