Another Orient-Express Hotel Leaves the Collection

Just over a week ago we told you that the Observatory Hotel in Sydney will leave the Orient-Express Collection come summer to be part of Langham Hotels. By then, Orient-Express will no longer have a presence in Australia; earlier this year its other property Lilianfels Blue Mountains made the transition to Starwood's Luxury Collection, marking this collection's debut in the country at the same time.

Lilianfels is set a few hours outside of Sydney in the village of Katoomba, the heart of the Blue Mountains national park in New South Wales. As you can see from the aerial shot, the famous Three Sisters are just a few minutes' walk away. Inside the historic mansion that was once the residence of New South Wales Chief of Justice, Sir Frederick Darley, you'll find 67 traditionally decorated rooms and 4 suites, with 22 of the rooms and 3 suites having views of the Jamison Valley.

What is This at The Nines Hotel in Portland?

March 7, 2012 at 12:00 PM | by | Comments (0)

We like to keep it fun but informative here at HotelChatter so our newest series, What is This? is devoted to odd-looking items in hotel rooms that upon first glance look as if they serve only a decorative purpose. But everything happens for a reason, right? And we're here to tell you what these things really do.

When we visited The Nines Hotel in Portland over the summer, it was nearly love at first sight in the guestrooms which feature jewel-toned furniture, sumptuous beds and original artwork on the walls.

But when we sauntered over to the desk, we were struck by the silver, beaded handles on the desk. What a darling touch! But it turns out the drawers do much more than look pretty.

It's Guess the Hotel revealed!

Were you able to figure anything out from the video we posted on Friday? Two people called out The Chatwal, which was correct! We were there last week, in the Producer's Suite on the tenth floor, to watch a new promotional video by Luxury Collection called HERE.

If you're at all restless like us, you might wind up booking an impromptu trip to Vermont, Scottsdale and/or Hawaii after you watch it. The 15-minute film is set at Equinox Resort & Spa, The Phoenician and The Royal Hawaiian, Waikiki successively, and each hotel comes off looking more idyllic than the next.

Over on Jaunted, you can get our inside looks at some of the world’s best airline lounges, so we thought we’d do something similar here and start talking about some of the hotel lounges we’ve frequented lately for our new series on Hotel Club Lounges. Today, we check out the lounge inside the fashionable Nines Hotel in Portland, Ore.

The Nines Hotel has some of the prettiest hotel rooms we've ever seen. (You can check them out here.) Which is why we expected a little more flair inside their Club Lounge on the 12th floor. But alas, we'll have to make do with some plaid pillows.

All guests who book club level accommodations will get a guest room on the 12th floor as well as a daily light breakfast, mid-day snacks, hors d'oeuvres, chocolates and "cordials" and an all-day open bar. You also have a dedicated concierge at your disposal.

Last week we gave you a little video tour of the prettiest girl in Portlandia, The Nines Hotel. But there's so much more to the room than what you saw on a few minutes of video and we've got all the eye candy for you to look at right here from the sumptuous beds to the jewel tone furniture, the Bee Kind toiletries, original artwork, local munchies in the snack bar and the cleverly hidden plug panels.

Again, this is a deluxe queen corner room on the 9th floor with views overlooking Pioneer Square. Superior rooms have the awesome atrium views while king rooms are slightly smaller.

Rates are totally doable too starting around $200 a night. But what really make The Nines a perfect 10 is the free WiFi. Sigh. We wish all hotels could be so nice.

Nearly three years after opening the Nines Hotel in Portland still looks fabulous. And considering that the hotel is housed in the former Meier and Frank department store, that's not really a surprise.

But what was surprising was just how many fascinating things there are all over the hotel. We got an in-depth tour earlier this week and could hardly stop clicking our camera. There's soo much to see here as evidenced by the hotel's awesome atrium action. But for today, we'll start off with a video tour of a deluxe queen corner room on the 9th floor with views overlooking Pioneer Square.

The best place to spend a hot, sticky Fourth of July is in a pool. But to really do it up in style, you'll head to The Joule for its July 3 midnight pool party that's part of a stay-two-nights, get-one-free deal.

The Dallas hotel's pool is incredible—we named it one of our top 10 death-defying rooftop hotel pools. It hangs off of the side of the building and gives the illusion that you are swimming off of the edge. A plexiglass window allows you to see the city while you splash about.

Presidential Suite

It so rarely happens but yes, a hotel has opened--no, not on time, but early. (We know, take a minute to compose yourself.) OK, so we had it listed as May 1 on our master list, but the Westin Lima wasn't really going to open until June and then, voila!, its doors opened, as if by magic, on May 16.

Not only is the property--the third under the Libertardor partnership with Starwood--ahead of the game, it's also quite dashing looking, as you can see from these photos.

Some great news for Starwood Preferred Guest members today--The Chatwal Hotel in New York is about to become a Luxury Collection property.

We noticed the change last night as we were trolling the internet for hotels, like we usually do. And we won't have much longer to wait. The hotel will join the LC group on April 25. That means you can earn SPG points for staying here and other benefits of the SPG program.

But you best have a lot of Starpoints on hand as it's a Category 6 hotel that will cost about 20,000 to 25,000 Starpoints for a free night. Rates for a queen bedroom start at $495 on April 25 while the king rooms are $670.

These Hotel Bars are Letting Us Drink In Spring, Literally

March 28, 2011 at 12:56 PM | by | Comment (1)

There's no more telling sign of spring than colorful flowers popping up everywhere. But instead of stopping to smell the flowers, our inner alcoholics recommend celebrating spring with a flowery alcoholic concoction. Fortunately, hotels are always at the ready to indulge our latest boozy craving by putting blooms in their cocktails with fragrant and tasty results.

If you want a taste of spring, visit these two bars for flower-infused tipples.

Naked Lady Alert In the Lobby of The Nines, Portland

Ok so we knew Portland, Oregon has a reputation of being uber-hip and all, but nakedness in the lobby is something we definitely didn’t expect to encounter – especially as we were staying in swanky Luxury Collection property, The Nines.

But as we came out of the elevator at the eighth floor to make our way to the check in desk, we were confronted by shop mannequins without any clothes on. Whew!

There were three of them round one side of the check in desk, and another one in a flasher’s pose on the way into the atrium and the restaurant Urban Farmer.

Sadly, they were all ladies. Even sadder, the theme did not continue into our bedroom. Although that’s probably for the best – we can only imagine what people might do with them if they did.

Modern art, eh?

How Does One Become the Jolliest Concierge Around? By Starting In Hollywood

Site Where: 326 Broadway [map], San Diego, CA, United States, 92101

Why, isn’t this a jolly looking fellow? Yes, folks, yes he is – and, coincidentally, he’s also one of the friendliest and best concierges we’ve ever encountered in a posh hotel.

His name is Mark Peak, he’s the Chief Concierge at the US Grant in San Diego, and we spent much of this past weekend either following his advice or hanging on his every word. We first met him on Saturday when we asked for advice on where to go to brunch and what to do in San Diego, and he took a load of trouble finding out what we liked before coming up with recommendations that were just right. Then, unprompted, he gave us some free tickets to an 80s band reunion gig that night in the Gaslamp Quarter, and we resolved to like him even more.

But it was yesterday that our concierge crush really solidified. First, he recognized us from across the lobby and asked how our brunch had gone (we love a good memory in a concierge because it makes us feel special).

Then we got to chatting, and he told us all about his past life – he’s been at the US Grant since it reopened in 2006, but before that he was a concierge at the Four Seasons Aviara, and before that – even more excitingly – he worked as a bellman at Four Seasons LA.

Mark’s tale starts like that of many others – he grew up in the sticks (Kentucky) and dreamed of being an actor, so escaped to Hollywood. But when he got there, he realized it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, and also, that he wasn’t as good an actor as he’d thought. So he abandoned the dream and, as he puts it, turned to use his acting skills in another way – the hospitality industry.
