Williamsburg Is Just The First Of Many 'Surprises' From King & Grove

Yes, we were already introduced to the Hotel Williamsburg four months ago, but since it's no longer called the Hotel Williamsburg, and will be undergoing several major changes over the next few months, it seems we'll have to get re-acquainted with this place all over again.

And in the process of doing so, it might be worth exploring how much Williamsburg will be a representation of future King & Grove hotels to come. For example, will all K&G hotels exist slightly outside of major metropolises (like in South Beach and Montauk)? Will they share any common design themes? Will they all have pools?

Hotel Williamsburg Gets Re-Christened As King & Grove Williamsburg

In other (not so) surprising developments today, it looks like King & Grove have finally made a move on the third property in their rapidly-growing portfolio of US boutique hotels. Starting today—as in, right now—the Hotel Williamsburg will be known simply as King & Grove Williamsburg, with a bunch of other changes on the way.

They still have all the old Hotel Williamsburg logos and branding up, but new signage will gradually be popping up over the next few months (which is a relief—we always found the promo images clashed with the conservative look of the actual hotel).

Add to that: a fresh re-design of the rooms, plus a new restaurant and bar concept. Hopefully, something beyond the whole farm-to-table gimmick, which is not only played out, but will also be featured in King & Grove Williamsburg's new neighbor, The Wythe.

Is This King & Grove's Second Hotel in Miami?

Where: 3425 Collins Ave [map], Miami Beach, FL, United States, 33140

Wow, King & Grove sure is growing fast. The still-new hospitality company with two properties in Montauk and one in Miami has hotels in the works in L.A. and New York City. But what's this? It looks like there could be a second Miami hotel coming to their portfolio, too.

We heard a rumor that King and Grove was working on renovating Miami's Versailles Hotel (formerly a condo-hotel), which is located on Collins Avenue in the 30s. Positioned to become the hot new spot on Miami Beach, the stretch is already home to The Palms and The Edition South Beach, with Faena Saxony (the hotel formerly known as Cipriani Miami) on the way. Adding a King and Grove property to the mix would cement this as the most exciting couple of blocks in Miami Hotel Land.

From A Hotel Standpoint, New York Is Pretty Much Done With the Recession

February 1, 2012 at 9:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

New York, New York—so great they named it twice. But, hey, don't just take our word for it (we live here, so we're a little biased). Talk to all the hotel developers who are buying up hotels left and right. Because of them, New York City alone accounted for 20% of hotel transactions across the entire country in 2011, announced The Real Deal.

In some ways, we already knew this. Well. We didn't know the exact numbers ($3.5 billion in sales, to be exact), but we did know that there were some major hoteliers sniffing out the next NYC locations for their brands. At a glance: Public New York is on its way, Edition New York has already found a location, and two other Marriotts (a Courtyard and a Springhill Suites) will be popping up in Herald Square.

Further downtown, Andre Balazs' Standard empire is steadily expanding eastward. And let's not forget about King & Grove, who recently burst onto the scene with two well-established NYC properties firmly under their belt.

Hotel Williamsburg's New Owners Shut Down Pillar & Plough

Boy, if we had a HotelChatter Award to give out for the most short-lived hotel restaurant, it would for sure go to Hotel Williamsburg's Pillar & Plough, which closed this week—after only two months of being open. Funny, because when we stopped by there recently to ask about the new ownership, an employee told us he didn't think the acquisition would create any immediate changes.

Well, this is quite a change.

Eater's got the scoop on the deal, which Graves Hospitality (the hotel's current operators) confirms is related to the King & Grove takeover. But, interestingly, they're also saying the deal hasn't officially gone through yet. Apparently, the mere prospect of an acquisition was enough to prompt the restaurant to shut down until further notice.

Evidence of King & Grove Inside The Tides South Beach

So now that King & Grove is on a whirlwind takeover spree (see Los Angeles, The Hotel Chelsea and The Hotel Williamsburg), we thought it was high tide, er, time we popped into one of their hotels to see what all the fuss was about.

Yet as far as we can tell, there's not much too fuss over.

We casually strolled around the Tides Hotel in South Beach last week and aside from a sign near the hotel's Terrace (aka streetside) cafe and a business card holder atop the maitre'd stand, everything seemed very Tidesian.

King & Grove Swoops Down On Hotel Williamsburg As Well

Only two months after officially opening, the Hotel Williamsburg has been acquired by King & Grove, a new(-ish) boutique brand that's wasting no time getting its name on the hotel map. Just three days ago, it was announced they'd be taking over one of New York's most prized historic hotels, the Hotel Chelsea.

We got a tip from a HW employee on Friday about the deal, which becomes effective in just a few short weeks. Though when we returned the following day to get more details, a Front Desk employee remained tight-lipped about the situation, stating only: "All I know is, I still have a job." That's the spirit! They must be doing something right for K&G to have taken notice in the first place...

Hotel Chelsea Will Still Be All About Art and Music When King & Grove Takes Over

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 222 W 23rd St. [map], New York, NY, United States, 10011
January 13, 2012 at 3:18 PM | by | Comments (0)

The aftershocks of today's news that King & Grove Hotels will be managing the chaotic Hotel Chelsea continue with this bit of info we received from a Hotel Chelsea insider. The source spoke about Patti Smith's private concert at the hotel on Wednesday for the building's new owner and the King & Grove management team (The Thursday night concert for the building's residents was cancelled after they protested.) The source says:

Patti's performance on Wednesday was the inauguration of a series of events related to music, the visual arts, literature and poetry, and film that will be curated by the ownership, management and creative teams of the Chelsea. The Chelsea will have new and established artists of all types performing, showing, creating and living there.

That's the future. What's there today is a decayed building in disrepair with a small minority of tenants who are so adverse to change that they'd prefer to live in squalor and pretend to care about the legacy than risk being a part of a successful restoration and return to relevancy that the Chelsea deserves.

Wow. We are stunned, stunned! The new boutiquey brand King & Grove Hotels will finally get a New York City outpost--in none other than the Hotel Chelsea.

In a Daily News piece over the kerfuffle about songstress Patti Smith doing a concert at the hotel (she later canceled the performance after tenants threatened to burn copies of her memoir, "Just Kids"), it made clear mention of King & Grove as the Chelsea's new management company:

On Wednesday, Smith posted a statement on her website, pattismith.net, defending her decision to work with the new owner of the hotel Joseph Chetrit and the Chelsea’s management company, King & Grove, which is headed by former Morgans Hotel Group CEO Ed Scheetz. On Wednesday night, Smith performed a show for friends and family of Chetrit, King & Grove and architect Gene Kaufman, who is overseeing the Chelsea’s renovation.

King & Grove Coming to LA, Possibly with Two Hotels

December 23, 2011 at 10:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

Lanyard key chains at Ruschmeyer's, a King & Grove Hotel in Montauk.

Downtown Los Angeles is not only getting an Ace Hotel but it's also going to get a King & Grove Hotel, maybe even two of them!

Downtown LA blog Brigham Yen found out earlier this month that indeed King & Grove would open up inside the old Hotel Clark near 4th and Hill Streets in downtown's Historic Core district (and just a few blocks away from the intended Ace Hotel.) A rep for King & Grove confirmed the scoop but was not able to release any further details. Still, Brigham Yen had noticed some renovations going on at the hotel including a new pool deck and some new orange curtains.

But one hotel might not be enough for King & Grove as the blog now says that the old Trinity Auditorium at 9th and Grand Ave in downtown could possibly be a second King & Grove hotel as well.

King & Grove Set to Make Waves at the Tides With FREE WiFi

Go To The Hotel's Web

This is a rarity--a new hotel management company comes into a hotel and instead of doing away with the free WiFi previously offered, they actually put in free WiFi.

That's what King & Grove Hotels are doing next week at their newest property The Tides South Beach, previously run by Viceroy Hotels. So if you're a huge fan of the Tides but always hated paying for WiFi, consider this an early Christmas present! As for the F&B and design refresh, we hear that's underway as well.

When Art Basel kicks off tomorrow, rooms at the hotel are surprisingly still available starting at $765 a night but next week when King & Grove are in the house, the rates drop to about $395 a night on Monday. But they do increase as the week goes on. Good thing that WiFi is now free!

King & Grove to Take Over The Tides Hotel in South Beach

We don't call it Miami Hotel Mambo for nothing.

There's been yet another boutique hotel shake-up on South Beach. Just a month after Thompson Hotels took over the Hotel Victor from Hyatt, we've got word that King & Grove Hotels, known for their intimate Hamptons properties, The Surf Lodge and Ruschmeyer's, will manage the The Tides Hotel on Ocean Drive starting in December. (Just in time for Art Basel!)

For those not already in the know, King & Grove is an indie boutique brand founded by former Morgans Hotel Group CEO Ed Scheetz along with Ben Pundole who was previously the Director of Entertainment at Morgans. Earlier this year K&G received funding from the Chetrit Group to help expand their brand and not-so-coincidentally, the new owner of the Tides Hotel is a company called CG Tides overseen by Joseph Chetrit. Chetrit said in a statement:

We are ecstatic that the Tides will become the newest King & Grove branded and managed property. By partnering with King & Grove, we are confident that our plans to rejuvenate the Tides and establish it as the preeminent luxury resort on Ocean Drive will be realized.
