The Ultimate Survival Guide to The Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island

Bad-ass player pictured here can be found with his friends in the Atlantis Predator Lagoon

For those who have never been to Atlantis on Paradise Island, the sprawling megaresort can be daunting.

Like Disney World, there is nothing quite like it anywhere in the world. And like DisneyWorld, Atlantis has the power to strike fear in the hearts and minds of parents who shudder the thought of wearing adult mouse ears almost as much as they dread hemorrhaging endless streams of cash.

To complicate matters, Atlantis is hard to describe as it's so many different things rolled into one: a gorgeous five-hotel Caribbean island resort, a 140-acre Aquaventure water park, the largest open-air marine exhibit in the world complete with dolphin and seal habitats, countless beaches and pools, a casino, a true culinary scene with restaurants from Bobby Flay and Nobu Matsuhisa, a seriously pimpin’ marina, and more.

All the confusion can make it hard to wrap your head around a visit. Where should you stay? How should you spend your day? What’s awesome and what’s overrated? How expensive will it be? Is there a shred of hope for some adult downtime or is it a kid bonanza all day all the time? You might be tempted to throw in the towel.

Just back from a recent visit, we thought it was time—at long last—to demystify the epic resort. The ins and outs, the highs and lows, and every reason why we’ll be back, slide wedgie and all; find it here in our Atlantis Survival Guide.

Klaus Ortlieb Resurfaces in Reykjavik

April 19, 2013 at 12:32 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's been a while since we've heard of hotelier Klaus Ortlieb, the man behind several hip NYC hotels like Cooper Square-now-Standard East Village Hotel, the excellent LES spot, THOR and even the super skinny Gotham Hotel on 46th Street. But at last we've got some new chatter on KO.

We've learned he's taken his hotel magic to Reykjavik in Iceland for the Hlemmur Square Hotel.

The hotel is described as "affordable yet stylish hostel accommodations" but the joint also promises "luxurious hotel rooms" under the same roof. Bu-bu-but how can that possibly be? Well, it just simply is. The hotel explains on their website:

To us it makes perfect sense, we are able to bring a little luxury to the world of hosteling and a bit of that “get to know your fellow man and buy him a drink” feeling to an upscale hotel. Iceland is the best place for it, always willing to experiment with pushing boundaries.

JW Marriott Makes Healthy Menus for Kids. But Who Wants 'Em?

April 16, 2013 at 10:07 AM | by | Comments (0)

You may not want your children to read this, but it's for their own good, so keep it a secret, if you know what's best for you. In keeping with the well-intended goal of some hotels to provide healthier food choices for the smaller set, JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts partnered with nutritionist and author Keri Glassman to create a new JW Kids Menu, helping the 'tween set try to build better eating habits that can be continued at home.

The idea is to present an interactive menu, which will debut in JW hotels this spring with kids favorites, but with a healthy twist. In other words--nix the fake chicken nuggets in favor of grilled organic chicken tenders and say "peace" to processed meatballs and instead, offer the fresh, turkey-made variety.

We like anything that will keep our kids away from The Colonel, but will it go over well when the little ones want to let their hair down (just like parents do), while on vacation?

“With kids’ food choices becoming increasingly diverse, we are looking to create dining options that are fresh, healthy and imaginatively tasty,” said Mitzi Gaskins, vice president & global brand manager for JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts. “These items will not only delight kids from a culinary standpoint, but will also let parents know the JW Marriott brand cares about the well-being of their entire family.”

As parents, we love the idea of organic foods nd no doubt we'll try this out with our little ones, not yet jaded by BK and McDs ads. But we can't help feel hesitant that our older kids will go for the whole "locally-sourced" spiel. Has JW met a 12-year old growing boy? We've rarely seen a carrot or celery stick win in any food choice with this set--ranch dressing dip or not, without a buffalo wing on the side.

The Peninsula Chicago's Mini Bunny and Other Easter Hotel Hoppenings

Nobody does a holiday better than a hotel but the Peninsula Chicago has really gone out of its way for Easter again this year.

The luxury hotel on North Michigan Ave has decorated a MINI Cooper with bunny ears, a pink nose and whiskers and a poofy tail. The bunny mobile will ride around Chi-town with Peter Cottontail and the Peninsula mascot Peter Bear passing out candy and toy Peninsula bears (dressed up in their Easter finest) to kids throughout the city. So parents, if a car pulls up with a bunny and a bear looking to give your kid some candy, it's actually ok to let them.

Back inside the hotel, the Lobby restaurant and The Children's Lounge will feature children's activities and of course, an Easter egg hunt. Looking for a last minute room at the hotel this weekend? Rates start at $350 a night.

You already know, the Trump Soho ticks off all the boxes of a sleek luxury hotel. Soho nabe? Check. Fendi Casa furniture? Check. Bathtubs with killer views? Check. Special events for Fashion Week? Check. Models AND sushi? Check and check. Yet despite all these cool requisites, the hotel is actually very kid-friendly.

We detailed our surprise last summer with their Lather Baby toiletries but they've upped the ante since then, adding a Hop Skip blue whale faucet cover for bath time along with Go Fish baby shampoo and bubble bath, a loofah glove, squeaky toys for babies and a step stool for those sorta-older kids who need just a bit of help inside the shower. Trump even has children's robes in three sizes along with kid slippers.

January 14, 2013 at 11:57 AM | by | Comments (0)

If you have ever stayed in a hotel with children, you can only pray that the weather is nice enough to ensure the kids are not cooped up inside and, ultimately, annoying any and all adults in the hotel. Novotel UK comes to the rescue with special Rainy Day Toy Chests overflowing with toys to keep everyone from going stir-crazy.

All 30 Novotel properties across the UK, understand the weather can sometimes be grey and rainy ruining excursion plans. That's why they partnered with Hasbroto supply the toy chest in their family rooms with My Little Ponies and Transformers to keep the kiddies entertained during inclement weather. And just to ease the entire family's frustration, the chests also have family boardgames and active games to tire the little ones out.

Along with the toys, children stay free (breakfast included!) when accompanying parents or grandparents. If a shared room is too close for comfort, the hotels will offer a 50% discount on adjacent rooms for those under 16. This along with in-room Cartoon Network and video games and it sounds like Novotel has a winning combo for families.

We love hotel that make children feel at home when they’re visiting. Many places exude a “don’t touch” aura-- a major turn-off for the toddler-toting set in what’s become an increasingly hostile travel environment for families.

Listen, we get not every hotel will be kid-friendly. We celebrate them, too. But when see that a place like the Four Seasons Boston has not one, but three special programs for little tykes, we can’t help but give them major props.

From in-room cupcakes, and free cookie-making classes, to “raid-the-fridge” days, who said luxury hotels were snooty and stuffy? We can’t, not with frosting gluing our lips together.

Earlier this summer, we took a look at some of the family and kid-friendly offerings out there in the hotel world and we even did an up close look at the amenities offered to kids visiting Chicago. Today, we've got another kid-approved hotel in Chicago to add to the list--The Waldorf Astoria Chicago.

The hotel is now stocking augmented reality wall decals from RoomMates for their pint-sized guests. When families check-in, the kids can choose from six different Disney designs to be stuck on the room walls. (Don't worry, they peel off easily.) The designs include Cars 2, Phineas and Ferb, Agent P and Dr. Doofenshmirtz, The Muppets and Mickey Mouse.

Aside from giving the little ones something fun to look at, the decals are also interactive. Just download the BoostAR app from iTunes or Google Play, then hold your phone or tablet up to the decal and voila! The decal will unlock interactive features, videos and games for the kids to play.

Best of all, the wall decals are totally complimentary. That should make you feel a little better about spending $300+ on the room.

July 19, 2012 at 1:16 PM | by | Comments (0)

There's even more hotel news flying around this week and we don't have time to give each and every story the love and attention it may deserve, so you will have to settle for some news briefs.

· Is the Hotel Costes Coming to Tribeca?: The Tribeca Citizen has discovered that a building at 443 Greenwich Street is turning into a hotel and that it may possibly become the New York outpost of the hip Parisian Hotel Costes hotel. A Sotheby's agent tweeted the Hotel Costes news but Tribeca Citizen hasn't been able to confirm anything just yet. What is for sure is that Tribeca is definitely getting a hotel at 443 Greenwich Street (pictured above.) And we're totally down with that!

· Sean Mac's Hotel Plans Materializing on W. 8th Street: When we last checked in with hotelier Sean MacPherson we could only guess if his plans to turn the Marlton House, an SRO building in Greenwich Village, would actually come to fruition. Well, according to this piece in the NY Post on the revitalized W. 8th Street neighborhood, his dreams are coming true. The building will be transformed into a Parisian-style 120-room boutique hotel. Even better, it will open by the end of the year.
