It’s proudly billing itself as the most expensive restaurant in the world, while opening in a time of global financial crisis.
Sublimotion, the restaurant at the new Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza, is clearly not the type of place you or I are going to frequent; and you and I are clearly not the kind of clientele it’s after. Having said that, we were all over the first reviews – which came out this week, following a preview dinner for 12 lucky journalists – like crows over freshly squeezed roadkill. Let’s see how the other half is going to live!
Apparently, you enter Sublimotion with a secret knock through an unmarked door on the street outside the hotel. That leads to a kind of cupboard, then to a lift, and from there to a “high-ceilinged, windowless oblong room – empty but for a single neon-lit communal table,” according to the Daily Telegraph.
The table and walls double as pieces of art with light installations and videos projected onto them throughout the 20 courses. The food (the journos tasted just six courses) is molecular gastronomy crossed with David Copperfield (Bloody Mary in a test tube that shakes itself, anyone? Solidified goops of olive oil pegged to a washing line? Dessert on a levitating plate?). Oh, and the servers are dressed as flight attendants.

A particularly rocking suite
Not content with lowering the tone in peaceful Bali, Palm Springs and Dubai (joking – you can’t lower the tone in Dubai), the behemoth that is Hard Rock will finally have a toehold in Europe this month, when Hard Rock Ibiza opens on June 13 in Playa d’en Bossa. At least they’ve chosen wisely with the party island – in fact, it seems odd that there isn’t already one there.
The room count has risen from the 480 proposed last year to 493, and as well as HRH standard accoutrements (Rock Spa – Ibiza’s largest, don’t you know – Body Rock fitness, Rock Shop etc), there will be an “outdoor concert terrace” with a 2500 capacity. Ellie Goulding, Snoop Dogg, Robin Thicke and, um, UB40 are already lined up to play it this year. Nile Rodgers, meanwhile, will play the opening party on the 13th.

Thinking of heading to the Spanish Balearic Islands this summer? There’s some new hotel competition coming to town on Mallorca and Ibiza, with Mélia’s lifestyle brand ME Hotels arriving on both islands.
Opening in May, ME Mallorca is located on a beach in Calvià (it's the former Beach House Hotel), and being next door to Nikki Beach you won’t have to go far to party. Poolside lounging can be done at the hotel too, at one of two pools, with SkinC spa and fitness facilities. Aura Managers – “the driver of the vibe and the leader of personalised service” – are on hand to help you with whatever you want. The vibe you’ll find in the rooms? Check it out below.
Cancun, Cabo, Madrid ... and, er, Vienna ... ME Hotels sure do love to set up shop in the party places, so we are not surprised to hear where they will be making their next move: the Balearic Islands. Rave on!
ME will be bringing their super-cool vibe, minimalist design, Aura Managers and, we hope, 4AM DJ's to Ibiza in June 2014 and to Mallorca in May. The 200-room Ibiza property will be situated bayside in Santa Eulalia and will have direct access from boat to the hotel. There will be 21 ME+ Suites, which usually means a dedicated host looking after you and a complimentary spa treatment, and the hotel will have two pools, Bali beds, an on-site fitness centre and roof top Skinc spa. Don't expect to sleep because DJs at the rooftop cocktail bar will be playing Ibizan classics deep into the night. Rates start at £200 ($320).
Hard Rock and The Palladium Hotel Group made the announcement this morning to transform two fomer Fiesta hotels into The Hard Rock Ibiza in 2014. The Club Don Toni and the Hotel Don Toni will be connected to each other through a remodeled lobby and multi-purpose space which will house various dining, shopping and entertainment. Upstairs will be a total of 480 hotel rooms, including 235 suites.
The rest of the hotel will be outfitted with Hard Rock Hotel standards such as the Rock Spa, the Body Rock fitness center, the Rock Shop, rock memorabilia as well as a beach club and a kids and teen club. Yes, kids and teens will be welcome here.
But the real focus here is will be the live music and DJ performances especially since Ibiza is pretty much the birthplace for electronic dance music. And foam parties. Do not forget about the foam parties. We'll be tracking the property's transformation from Fiesta to Hard Rock. In the meantime, rates at the Hotel Don Toni start around 300 Euros a night this weekend.
