Trump DC Will Open Across The Street From The White House

February 8, 2012 at 8:41 AM | by | Comments (0)

It was announced this morning that, after much consideration, Trump will be the one to revive DC's floundering architectural relic, the Old Post Office, by turning it into a 250-room hotel. According to the Washington Post, quite a few investors and developers (including Hilton) had their eye on the building, which dates back to the 1890s.

Though Trump and his daughter Ivanka have plans to do it up Trump-style (think wall mosaics, temperature-controlled chocolate labs, Louis Vuitton-inspired wine bars), the plan—for now, at least—is actually to preserve the hotel's heritage.

"I think the historic facade of the building will be the greatest signage of all," Ivanka told journalists yesterday. Because, as we all know, it's what's inside that counts.

From A Hotel Standpoint, New York Is Pretty Much Done With the Recession

February 1, 2012 at 9:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

New York, New York—so great they named it twice. But, hey, don't just take our word for it (we live here, so we're a little biased). Talk to all the hotel developers who are buying up hotels left and right. Because of them, New York City alone accounted for 20% of hotel transactions across the entire country in 2011, announced The Real Deal.

In some ways, we already knew this. Well. We didn't know the exact numbers ($3.5 billion in sales, to be exact), but we did know that there were some major hoteliers sniffing out the next NYC locations for their brands. At a glance: Public New York is on its way, Edition New York has already found a location, and two other Marriotts (a Courtyard and a Springhill Suites) will be popping up in Herald Square.

Further downtown, Andre Balazs' Standard empire is steadily expanding eastward. And let's not forget about King & Grove, who recently burst onto the scene with two well-established NYC properties firmly under their belt.

The Belgraves: Less Than a Week From Opening

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 20 Chesham Place, London, United Kingdom, SW1X 8HQ
January 26, 2012 at 4:10 PM | by | Comments (0)

With just six days to go till Thompson crosses the pond and Belgraves opens (finally), we popped round this morning to see how things looked. Would they be on track?

Well, from the face of it, yes. The entrance, lobby and restaurant looked finished, down to artwork on the walls and tables laid for dinner. The hotel sign was affixed to the wall. The imposing doorway was in place. It all looked pretty much ready to go on the ground floor.

Then we looked up and saw what looked like unfinished rooms through the windows – some appeared to have curtains, some not. Will they open with all their rooms on Wednesday? We hope so, but it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker if they didn’t.

Is That Construction Noise Saying Ciao, Cipriani Miami?

Where: 3201 Collins Ave [map], Miami Beach, FL, United States, 33140
January 18, 2012 at 9:14 AM | by | Comments (0)

Last summer, we passed by this building--the site of the perpetually-delayed Cipriani Miami--every day. And it was a dead zone. Nothing happening. Which led us to believe the fancy-pants project was dead in the water.

Not so! A Miami tipster sent us this shot snapped this week, along with word that construction was afoot. At last! But. It may not be a Cipriani.

It turns out that the ill-fated Cipriani development was taken over by Argentine hotelier Alan Faena--yes, of the hip Faena Hotel in Buenos Aires. And here's what he has in store for the site...

On Your Mark, Get Set, Build A Hotel in 15 Days!

January 9, 2012 at 9:11 AM | by | Comments (0)

While other hotels were busy throwing circus parties and locking out their guests, this New Year's Eve proved rather productive for one Chinese architecture company, who managed to set a new record for the speediest construction of a hotel the world has ever seen. Fifteen days is all it took for a 30-story hotel to go up near Dongting Lake in Hunan Province, China.

And if you don't believe us, just watch this 360-hour time lapse video to prove it.

The entire operation was led by Broad Sustainable Construction, who used a prefabricated building system to put together an earthquake-resistant 30-story hotel in just over two weeks. How was it possible? By starting with a complete steel frame, sections of the hotel were then added, fully assembled, one by one, until all thirty floors were in place. Since floor tiles, drywall, electrical wiring, plumbing were already in place, it was then just a matter of throwing in some furniture and putting flowers on the table.

If Only Coney Island's Next Hotel Looked This Good

December 15, 2011 at 1:30 PM | by | Comments (0)

Years after all the old hotels have dried up and disappeared from Coney Island, how will a new property fit into the 'hood's ever-changing landscape? Well, given the hotel's proposed location, we can only come to one conclusion: with difficulty.

According to the Brooklyn Daily, a vacant bus depot on the edges of the Coney Island Creek has been singled out as the potential site of a new hotel. Nevermind the fact that it's surrounded by dismal car dealerships and parking lots. Nevermind the fact that it lies four blocks from the amusement district. The city is looking for proposals from developers by February, and with all the interest being shown in Brooklyn these days, they might just get the response they're after. But we just can't help picturing the god-awful anti-views here.

For a pic of the proposed site, see below!

Why Hello There, Hotel Indigo Hong Kong

Where: Queen's Road East, Hong Kong, China
December 15, 2011 at 9:35 AM | by | Comment (1)

Imagine our surprise yesterday when we stumbled out of the maze of assorted stalls of the Wan Chai Market--which sell clothing, jewelry, toys alongside meat and live, still-flapping-in-a-box fish--came face-to-face with this--the construction site for the upcoming Hotel Indigo Hong Kong.

The project was first announced back in 2009 and the dragon-wrapped hotel on the bustling Queen's Road East will open sometime next year. What's that you say, a dragon-wrapped hotel? Yes, the hotel's exterior will feature a "conspicuous dragon in burnished bronze" that will also function as an eco-screen to counteract hot spots and solar gain.

Inside there will be 150 Feng Shui-designed rooms and since Hotel Indigo is all about the local neighborhood, we're guessing the history of the Wan Chai 'hood will be featured prominently throughout.

Williamsburg's Newest Hotel Comes In Three Sizes

December 15, 2011 at 9:10 AM | by | Comments (0)

Though we're all still holding our breath to find out which proposal will be chosen for the new Brooklyn Bridge Park hotel, we've now been alerted to yet another hotel project sparking on the Brooklyn waterfront, this time in Williamsburg.

According to Arch Daily, Oppenheim has designed three skinny, overlapping rectangular buildings, each with a different height. The tallest of the towers, at 440' high, is intended to act as a "third pillar" of the Williamsburg Bridge. We're pretty sure the original architects only intended for the bridge to have two pillars in the first place, but hey. If Williamsburg isn't the place to be adding new pillars where pillars aren't needed, we don't know where is.

Tryp By Wyndham Gets A Sign

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 345 W 35 St [map], New York, NY, United States, 10001
December 13, 2011 at 10:45 AM | by | Comments (0)

It looks like things are coming along at the new Tryp By Wyndham near Times Square. Though the hotel has definitely breezed by its planned November opening, a near-finished lobby (see photos below) and newly-installed signage should mean we start to see some action here after the holidays.

This is of course just a fraction of the mega hotel explosion that New York City is about to endure over the next few years, as per Bloomberg's vision. But all 7,000 hotel rooms are not created equal—nor do they simply appear overnight. For instance, over the next few months, we should be looking at a new Conrad New York (fancy art), a Hyatt in Union Square (super awesome location), and the elusive NoMad (has a glass pyramid). Not to mention The Out NYC (NYC's first gay hotel).

Rich Swedes are Mad About Plans for a Tiny, Seemingly Non-Posh Hotel in Their 'Hood

Where: Stockholm, Sweden
December 7, 2011 at 4:34 PM | by | Comments (0)

Engelbrekt Church, a Stockholm monument near the site of a proposed boutique hotel that has locals "up in arms"

Residents of one of Stockholm's most well-to-do neighborhoods are throwing a ritzy hissy fit over the construction of a new hotel, though it's unclear whether they take issue with the fact that the boutique property will require converting a historic building, because it won't live up to their posh standards, or a combination of both.

The Only Way Is Essex For England's Latest Hotel Venture

November 23, 2011 at 1:41 PM | by | Comments (0)

Mick looking Grand

Ladies and gentlemen, forget Ian Schrager and Andre Balazs and even the Donald: there’s a new hotel baron in town. He’s a silver fox, he has a charming twinkle of the eye, and he definitely has a way with the ladies, by the looks of the people he’s pulled. His name? Mick Norcross.

Now, you may not have heard of him if you’re in the States. You may even not know the name if you’re in the UK; but you’ll definitely be au fait with what’s made him famous: The Only Way Is Essex.

For those who need to come up to speed: TOWIE is kind of like the UK equivalent of Jersey Shore (only way, way better), set in Essex, which is kind of a cross between New Jersey and Vegas, with a little bit of Reno thrown in. Kirk Norcross is one of the main characters, kind of a hybrid of Pauly D (though he owns a club, rather than DJs) and the Situation (pulls lots of ladies but appears to despise womankind). His dad, who’s the money behind the scenes, is Mick. Mick likes hanging out with Kirk’s friends and coming onto ladies a couple of decades younger than himself.

Caught up? Anyways, according to the fount of all knowledge, the Daily Mail, Mick has bought the dilapidated (or, as the FailMail writes, “debilitated”) Grand Hotel in Leigh-On-Sea (a former grand dame, built 1896, that’s since fallen into gross disrepair), and plans to magic it into a boutique hotel, complete with restaurant and spa.

The Virgin Hotel Chicago Building from Every Angle

November 8, 2011 at 4:48 PM | by | Comments (2)

More than one year ago, Virgin Hotels launched a website. It was real, it was happening, it was the first step toward Virgin Hotels becoming a solid thing. At the time, there was a list of potential US cities for the first location—New York, Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, DC and Boston. Notice what's missing? CHICAGO, the newly announced winning location for first Virgin Hotel in the world.

The site at 203 North Wabash sits on the very northeast border of the Loop; in fact it's catercorner to a bend in the El tracks (here's hoping for good soundproofing) and just one block south of the Chicago River. Enough about the ideal location. Let's look at it:
