Last time we checked in on Yotel Times Square—aka the $10 hotel for ants—the lobby bathroom was suffering from some major door malfunctioning. They appear to have addressed the problem, and have since added a rather interesting moose to the lobby decor. But we were left wondering to ourselves: what is actually going on over there?

After opening to such fanfare with a mammoth performance piece that literally spanned 100 rooms, we haven't exactly heard much from them since. Oh, except for this bizarre Sunday brunch invitation that showed up in our inboxes yesterday. A baby, gnawing on a plate, with the caption: "Eat Yo! Brunch". Well, it's not a jelly doughnut pancake, but they have our attention!

The hotels on the Collins Ave stretch of South Beach are known for their kick-ass pools. But, alas, also for their wallet-breaking rates. Which is why we love hearing about new ways to park ourselves poolside without staying the night (or jumping the fence).

The National Hotel is our latest hero for helping in that department. The under-the-radar Deco property has just launched its new Sunday Brunch menu, for $39 per person.

Or, if you're like us, and need the sustenance of nonstop Bloody Mary or Mimosa refills, make that $49.

Forgo Pub Fare in Favor of These London Hotel Brunches

February 18, 2011 at 1:03 PM | by | Comments (2)

The Hoxton Grill

This week, HotelChatter is paying special attention to London. The city of grey and rain is gearing up for yet another Fashion Week and impending royal nuptials, along with continued preparations for the 2012 Olympic Games, so our lady on the ground, Heidi Atwal, is guiding us through some of her favorite places.

The UK prides itself on traditional Sunday roasts, not champagne brunches as we're accustomed to Stateside. Stellar eggs benedict and fluffy pancakes (be aware that "flapjack" refers to something else entirely across the pond) are ever elusive menu items, especially among hotel restaurants. In a city where midday weekend meals start off with a pint rather than a mimosa, we've managed to track down three hotel outfits that do brunch particularly well. Read on for our suggestions.

If you head to the Sir Francis Drake for brunch, you might make the mistake of hitting up Scala's Bistro to taste former season-four Top Chef contestant Jennifer Biesty's rustic Italian fare. But those in the know head to the hotel's Harry Denton's Starlight Room to share their eggs with a bunch of drag queens.

The five-year-old "Sunday's a Drag" adds some flair to the weekend brunch routine. Mimicking the old-time variety shows, "Sunday's a Drag" features decked-out drag queens performing stand-up comedy, doing impersonations and lip-syncing ditties.

April 1, 2010 at 9:28 AM | by | Comments (0)

The Taj Boston will serve a view with Easter brunch.

Here's what's fun about Easter: bunnies, holiday candy and good eats. What's not so fun about the holiday is cooking said good eats and, even worse, doing the dishes. This year, get out of the kitchen and let someone else do the Easter cooking.

We rounded up five places you can get a tasty hotel brunch, so that you can focus on chillaxing with family and friends rather than cooking and cleaning.

The Weekend Brunch Scene at Andaz Wall Street's Wall & Water

February 12, 2010 at 9:34 AM | by | Comments (0)

After sampling the delicious veal cheek and winter veggies from Wall & Water at Andaz Wall Street’s opening, we were keen to get back for a meal once the restaurant had opened to the real world. Only we’re a little scared of bankers so we instead of dropping in on a bustling weekday morning, we met a friend there on the traditional day of brunch, Sunday.

So, how was it? In a word: quiet. But that’s more than OK with us. We’ve always liked exploring the Financial District on weekends, when the only people walking around are residents and tourists taking photos outside the NYSE. The Andaz lobby was quiet, and the staff welcoming and friendly. Up those white marble stairs we were greeted with this tableau of fruits, juices, and pastries, and a hushed scene at Wall & Water.

What $64 for a Hotel Brunch in The 'Burbs Will Get You

So you might be wondering why we've headed to the 'burbs for a hotel brunch but the landmark Garden City Hotel on Long Island (built in 1874!) actually draws lots of business travelers because of its central location and because it's only about 30 miles from New York City. American Idol finalists and other celebs stay there because of its proximity to performance venues like Nassau Coliseum and Jones Beach. But locals head to the hotel for Rein's super-expensive $64 Sunday brunch from Chef Steven De Bruyn.

We broke out our credit card and our biggest-waisted pants, and tried the all-you-can-eat brunch. After the jump, we'll tell you whether it was worth 64 smackers for breakfast foods.

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel Gets Jazzed About Brunch

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 7000 Hollywood Blvd. [map], Los Angeles, CA, United States, 90028
November 20, 2009 at 3:04 PM | by | Comments (0)

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel has a long and checkered history that well pre-dates today’s celebrity tantrums and “Super Sweet 16” parties. As a way of hearkening back to that golden-hued heyday, the hotel has started offering a new ”Jazz Brunch” on Sundays from 11:00am-3:00pm.

Since the special brunch starts at $18 per person, it’s actually a pretty good deal, especially for a Thompson Hotel, and especially considering that overnight parking will run you around $30, and the standard rate for a stay at the hotel starts at $225 a night.

If you’re anything like us, you’re naturally dubious about any meal that is accompanied by live music. What is this, the shoe department of Nordstrom’s? But we checked up on it, and here’s the scoop.

The Pearl Pours a Brewski Brunch for San Diego Beer Week

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 1410 Rosecrans St. [map], San Diego, CA, United States, 92106
November 6, 2009 at 9:14 AM | by | Comments (0)

The Pearl Hotel will toast to San Diego's Beer Week (November 6 to 15) with a poolside beer brunch on November 8 featuring suds from local artisan brewery AleSmith Brewing Co.

The beer brunch will have four brewski-and-eats stations at each corner of the pool. At one station, the Belgian-style Grand Cru will be paired with a smoked ham and roasted pear croque monsieur. Another will offer the Speedway Stout, an imperial stout with coffee, to complement the hazelnut French toast and Tahitian vanilla custard. Old Numbskull, a West Coast-style barleywine, will come with house-smoked bacon, sunnyside-up quail eggs and bird's next hash browns.

The last station will pour Anvil, the brewery's signature beer, to go with the raisin rum coffeecake.

We Do Brunch at The Breslin and the Verdict Is: It's Ace

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 20 W 29th St [map], New York, ny, United States, 10001
November 2, 2009 at 9:39 AM | by | Comments (0)

At last! The Breslin restaurant inside the Ace Hotel New York is open, and HotelChatter was there on Saturday to sample the goodness. Either the hotel was well-booked this weekend or just as many New Yorkers have been salivating over this opening as much as we have, because the Breslin was jumpin’. We started at the bar, which is always a nice way to pass the time while waiting for a table, but in this case it was not the best introduction to a delicious meal served with just the right amount of attention.

The first sign that the staff are still finding their groove was the wait itself. We needed a table for two—and could see a smattering of them in the dining room—but we were still told the wait would be about 10 minutes. (The Breslin doesn’t take reservations so that was not a factor.)

Settling in at a rickety bar table, we decided to order a Bloody Mary (yes, they are serving booze, despite complaints from the mosque across the street), but just getting the bartender’s attention took 10 minutes itself. Even though there were two other people behind the bar with him, busying themselves with unknown tasks.

Waiting in this brand new but decked out to look old space is not a chore, at least this early in the game, but we hope the staff get into the swing of things soon.
