Art Series Hotels Launch Another Art Series, This Time With A Fake Warhol

May 11, 2012 at 10:44 AM | by | Comments (0)

In other (not so major) hotel news today, our favorite art-loving Aussie hotel brand, Art Series Hotels, has launched their newest promotion, "Which Warhol." Over the course of the next few months, guests will be presented with multiple Andy Warhol replicas hanging in the hallways, and among the fakes will be an original Warhol, valued at $20,000, which only the keenest of eyes will be able to pick out.

Whoever is actually able to figure out which Warhol is which gets to take it home!

We've always dreamed of hanging an actual Warhol in our bedroom, and never thought that would come about by visiting a hotel in Australia. But now that the possibility is out there...

Kimpton Goes Desert Chic With The New Palomar Phoenix, Opening June 5

Waaay, way back in 2009, we reported on an in-the-works project known as Hotel Palomar Phoenix, to be housed in a 34-story mixed use building known as CityScape. Well, that development took some twists and turns, but now the hotel is finally set to open on June 5 with starting rates of $149/night.

The Downtown Phoenix Journal is reporting that all 242 rooms will have a "desert-infused palette" of espresso brown, gray, beige and "pops" of orange, and its new GM, Jim Hollister, even compares the hotel's stark design to "that show Mad Men."

Although we personally don't let ourselves get too caught up in surface things like paint, wallpaper and fixtures unless the hotel has the goods to back them up. Which, like many Kimpton hotels before it, this one does.

The Algonquin's New Artwork Wants You To Remember What Manhattan Used To Look Like

Last week, we showed you a look at the new guest rooms over at The Algonquin. Lots of changes will be coming to this hotel in the next few months—from the lobby to the revamped Oak Room to the guest rooms, the interiors will certainly have a 'fresher' feel when the doors re-open on May 24.

But, as anyone who's visited here knows, this place isn't all about modernity. So to keep things in perspective, the hotel has installed an exclusive series of black and white photographs in all the guest rooms, which depict Manhattan as it was in the first half of the twentieth century.

Don't Cry If You Have Trouble Finding The Secret Art At W Paris

The W Paris Opera made its grand debut exactly two months ago, and boy! how the time flies. Just when we were thinking it might be worth checking in on them again to see if rates had gone down (they haven't), we came across this awesome-sounding art installation in one of the hotel's suites.

Coolhunting reports that the series, which is found only in suite 112, is the work of French artist Zevs, who covered the walls in dripping Louis Vuitton logos and drew tears streaming down the faces in portraits. What's even cooler, the ink used for the markings is only visible with a black light, so the art itself doesn't truly come alive until it gets illuminated by the right kind of light.

Porcelain Books, Lenticular Art and Coin Sculptures? Toto, We’re Not in a Hotel Lobby Anymore

Ever since the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago rebranded and reopened its lobby and resto space this February, the new restaurant Allium has been getting a lot of buzz. We stopped by to see it out for ourselves and venturing out of the elevator, were stopped by something else: the gorgeous entry that felt every bit a private art collector’s gallery.

Dramatically, big paintings hung across the walls from each other, coin-melded sculptures called from the corners, flower arrangements brightened a table in the center. Had we taken a wrong turn? Where was the front desk? The concierge? Was this even the lobby?

Turns out we were right where we were suppose to be, right in the Four Seasons new hotel lobby, which is suppose to be every bit about art. We spied the registration desk and concierge to the right and more spacious, art-filled rooms flowing beyond it and very much like a museum, only more posh and comfortable.

Who Will Step Into the Role Of 'Cultural Guru' At the Out NYC?

Now in its second month of soft opening, things are only just starting to heat up at the Out NYC. After recently speaking with the hotel's GM, David Lopez, we learned the hotel's big opening is actually scheduled for Gay Pride in June, when a full-force grand opening bash will kick the "straight-friendly urban resort" into high gear for the summer season.

But that's not all. We also learned that Out NYC is planning to hire what they're calling a "cultural guru" to steer the direction of the brand as a whole and curate interesting partnerships among leaders in the fields of art, fashion, design and architecture. Sounds a little like those "connoisseurs" that St. Regis likes to hire. Except the Out NYC is much smaller, and has much more of a targeted audience.

So what exactly does the Out NYC have in mind for its cultural guru? Read on to find out!

W Times Square to Host First Instagram NYC Exhibit, and They Want Your Photos

April 6, 2012 at 4:57 PM | by | Comments (0)

We don't have to tell you that we're pretty crazy for the social photo sharing app Instagram and its potential for peeking into the hotel rooms of other travelers. This week saw the launch of Instagram for Android and now, more good news:

The W Hotel Times Square will open New York City's first Instagram photography exhibit on May 1. On display in the hotel's Living Room lobby area through June, the photos consist of works from five of the most popular Instagrammers in the Instagram NYC community. BUT! There's still a opening for one more, thanks to a contest of course. The details:

What's Inside The Mystery Art Deco Chamber At Jumeirah Essex House?

When we slipped in through the back entrance of the Jumeirah Essex House last week, we hardly were expecting to stumble upon a mini treasure trove of an art collection. In fact, we were actually just looking to use the bathroom.

But a pair of heavily gilded double doors proved too alluring NOT to open, and curiosity got the better of us. So we entered through the doors, and found ourselves in a little room—more of an antechamber really—that was so exotic and bizarre, we had to linger for a few minutes taking pictures (and hoping no one from security would show up and eject us Jenna Talackova-style from the premises).

Though it now effectively functions as a coat room for the larger (and less exotic) conference room beyond it, the "Red Room," as we've nicknamed it, was full of panther statuettes, art deco-inspired furniture and gold-framed mirrors.

Kimpton's First Art Gallery Opens At The Palomar San Diego

Though many of Kimpton's spaces have a sort of art-y feel, there hasn't in fact been a dedicated art gallery space in any Kimpton hotel until now, at Palomar San Diego. A small portion of the lobby (above) has been converted into Salazar Contemporary Art Exhibits, a cozy nook that will showcase the works of local, up-and-coming artists.

The display will rotate about once a month, and hotel profits will be donated to a local children's charity that supports the arts. We don't really know how Kimpton has found the time to organize any of this, as we know they've been busy over the last few months dominating one hotel after the other.

Floating Beds and Outdoor Bathtubs: Inside Singapore's New Majestic Hotel

What did TripAdvisor rate "Trendiest Hotel of 2011?" This one: the Hotel New Republic in Singapore's Chinatown. Don't let that color your judgment however, since our recent stay proved that "trendy" here doesn't mean it's overcrowded, packed with scensters or cheap furniture to look "cool." Instead, the New Republic is a quiet 30-room design-focused hotel that has expertly renovated a historic Chinatown shophouse into a place we sincerely wish we had booked for more than one night.

To be completely honest, of all the hotels we've experienced in Singapore, the New Majestic is the first one we'd return to on our next trip. It is ideal for travelers who seek out unique spaces that reflect the spirit of the destination (ah hem, not a big chain hotel) and for those who desire to be outside of the business district, in the heart of culture. And maybe those who want a funky pool too.

Rooms at the New Majestic begin around $200 per night, which we paid. There really aren't any bad rooms, but we'd try for the second floor where each room has either a balcony or a patio, some of those patios with outdoor soaking bathtubs. It's details like this—and there are many of them—that give you a sense that the New Majestic is having fun...fun with design, fun with being in Chinatown and fun with having you there, doing things like taking an al fresco midnight bath by the light of a lantern.

Which Corridor Will You Get Sucked Into At the Vincci Bit Barcelona?

A well-known Spanish brand of hotels, Vincci Hotels, will be opening their newest hotel, Vincci Bit in Barcelona next month, and guests will be treated to some pretty interesting hotel art. Unlike other places, where artists get commissioned to make specific pieces or installations just for the lobby, Vincci Bit has tapped seven artists to paint seven different murals in the corridors of the hotel.

Other murals, which are still being completed, have been done by artists from Italy, France, Japan, and, of course, Spain. The above shot is of the fourth floor, where American muralist Matt W. Moore decided to focus on triangles. Lots of them. The whole job reportedly took about 14 gallons of paints and two weeks of painting.

Kevin Costner's Dunbar Resort Never Happened But Some Bison Did

Where: SD, United States
March 21, 2012 at 11:20 AM | by | Comment (1)

We knew that Kevin Costner liked hotels, especially hotel massages, but we didn't know that he liked them so much he was going to open his very own resort.

The key phrase, however, is "was going to open" because his Dunbar Resort in South Dakota (yes, named after his character in Dances with Wolves) never got off the ground.

But the failed resort has made the news recently because artist Peggy Detmers is claiming that she has not been paid for the gigantic 17 bronze horse and bison sculptures that Costner commissioned for the resort and which took her nine years to build.

During that time she claims she had to turn down other commissions and so missed opportunities, leading to a loss in her business. She is now facing the Hollywood actor in South Dakota Supreme Court over the contract they signed in 2000. In the contract, Costner promised to either build the resort by 2010, put the sculpture in another agreed place or sell it and split the profit.
