These Dog Concierges Have Written a Book, Have You?

It’s that time of the week again: Cute Hotel Doggie Friday! And today we give you not one but two adorable hotel doggies. Because we’re nice like that. Both of these smilin’ fools work for Fairmont Hotels—Catie Copley (the black lab) at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston, and Santol (a Bernese mountain dog cross) at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac in Quebec City.
They have the lofty title of Canine Ambassador, and enjoy all the perks that go with it—business cards, email addresses, comfy beds in the lobby, plenty of attention from guests and staff, and of course, their own kids’ book. Catie Copley’s Great Escape tells the story of Catie and Santol each visiting the other’s hotel. It’s the second book for Catie, who is apparently so popular that she has her own merchandise in the Copley Plaza’s store.

Fairmont Gives You One Less Excuse Not to Work-Out On the Road

We’ll admit we can justify pretty much any detractor as grounds not to exercise — particularly while traveling. Forgotten running shoes? Wouldn’t want to get injured. Alpha male showing off on the other treadmill? Eh, we’ll try again later when things are less intimidating.
Not to mention, personal TV screens — or a kick-butt iPod mix — are pretty much must-haves. Some hotels, for their part, have made it less easy to skip our workouts, like Fairmont Hotels. In addition to partnering with Adidas to provide exercise clothes and shoes, Fairmont is now also letting guests check out fully loaded iPods, complete with songs and playlists.
Of course, there’s one teensy catch: iPods only feature EMI artists (think radio darlings Coldplay, Lenny Kravitz, Norah Jones), which makes sense considering the hotel and label joined forces earlier this year to offer the Fairmont Music Store, an online music shop designed to entice guests to join the hotel chain’s loyalty program.

Luau in San Francisco for New Year's Eve

It's hard to believe, but New Year's Eve is less than two months away, which means a parade of hotel party tickets will soon be—or already are—available to the public. Most of these are highfalutin affairs where you'll find women competing in unofficial "Who has the shortest skirt?" contests, and where bottles of champagne circulate throughout the evening. These swanky soirees are easy enough to find, but for an unusual change of pace, you may want to consider heading to The Fairmont in San Francisco, where an inaugural New Year's luau will be held at the historic Tonga Room.
HotelChatter reader Mark, a long time Tonga Room patron, tipped us off to this unique NYE event and had good things to say about his experiences there:
On ocassion I visit the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar to have a drink and some appetizers. It's a historic restaurant and bar...and unusually so has a rain storm every half hour or so...right in the bar area! I just heard from the staff last week that for the first time they are [having] a luau for New Year's Eve, and this isn't in Hawaii...it's in San Francisco! Kinda off the wall and should be fun.

The Savoy Will Finally Reopen In April Or May Next Year

If it seems like years since The Savoy closed its doors for its £100m restoration, that’s because it, um, is. It closed in December 2007, and was supposed to reopen 16 months later, but of course, 16 months in hotel speak is double the length of normal human time.
But, hallelujah, it looks like we’re coming to the end of the process - Fairmont just announced that they expect it to reopen in Spring 2010. And when we quizzed them what counts as spring, they said April or May. Here’s hoping!
We’re not sure what’s taken all the time up, but they’re adding a new two-bedroom Royal Suite, "remodeling" the River Restaurant, "relaunching" the River Suites, and adding a new bar, the Beaufort, and a rooftop swimming pool. Dare we hope it’s an infinity pool overlooking the Thames?

The Fairmont SF and DC Deliver Luxury and a Lexus Hybrid

Luxury is synonymous with excess, which in the car world usually suggests the use of high smog-emitting vehicles. Bigger is not always better for Mother Earth, with all that carbon monoxide contributing to her degradation.
A depressing reality, to be sure, but with environmental awareness being so very haute these days, tastemakers and luxury providers are striving to make the good life the green life, too. It's no coincidence that you hear blatant plugs for hybrid cars as stars arrive on the Oscars red carpet, you know. Plush comforts and planet-friendly alternatives can coexist, as LuxuryLink, Lexus, and The Fairmont San Francisco and Washington DC are attempting to prove with special Eco-Chic packages.
Included in the three-night deal for two in San Francisco are accommodations in a special Lexus Hybrid Living Suite decked out in all organic or sustainable materials, use of the 2009 Lexus LS 600H Hybrid sedan, organic wine, and passes to three local green wineries in Napa. In DC, you get a two-night stay for four, including Living Suite digs, use of the same sedan, organic wine upon arrival, $150 in hotel dining credits, and a $100 donation to the National Geographic Society.

Fairmont Hotels Go Exotic With Three New Silk Road Hotels

We love new hotels, and we definitely love new hotels in exotic places – so the fact that the Fairmont group have just opened up three new hotels along the Silk Road gets us pretty excited.
The first is the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr in Abu Dhabi – that unusual name means "Gateway to the Sea" so you can guess that it's a beachfront hotel. There's a private beach and two swimming pools if relaxing is on your agenda, but it's also easy to visit the gold markets, a nearby mosque or trek out on a desert safari. Until the end of the year nightly rates start from $230 as an opening special.

Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu Turns 110, Offers Rooms for $110 a Night

Another gimmicky hotel rate! Although, this takes place in Quebec and it's a Fairmont Hotel so it's a little pricier (and Frencher) than other room rate gimmicks we've seen as of late.
The stunning, cliffside Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu is turning 110 years old and to celebrate, the hotel is offering rates for--you guessed it--$110 a night. While the stays are good through December 22, you must book between October 12 to 31. The rate is also open based on availability. The hotel suggests you call in person at 1-888-403-9199 to book. Normally, rooms are about $170CAD a night.
So what do you get for $110 a night? Well, nothing really besides a room which is non-refundable and full pre-payment is required.

The Fairmont Southampton Offering $149 Rates (But Only For 1 Week)

If you're missing your Bermuda shorts now that Fall has arrived and want to take them out for a whirl in the real Bermuda, the Fairmont Southampton is offering rates of $149 per night but only for seven days so get booking.
The offer includes a guestroom, complimentary breakfast, unlimited golf for two at the hotel's own golf course, as well as some resort activities over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
The sale begins today at noon (now) and lasts until 11:59pm on October 13. The hotel stay must take place between November 1 and April 16, 2010. The $149 rate does not include taxes, gratuities or resort fees which are a little overboard here.
There's a $10.20 gratuity per person per night and a $9.65 per person resort "levy." Add in taxes and the room is nearly $200 a night. Also that rate is good for a "Moderate Room" category with "no view" as the room description kindly points out. Deluxe Harbour view rooms start at $199 a night.
To book, use the code PTLZ (It's also a Travelzoo special deal.)

Fairmont Lures Us In With Chocolate and Pinot Noir

Fairmont Hotels may have opened up three new hotels along the ancient silk road yesterday (Cairo, China, Abu Dhabi) but they still have a special place in their hearts for California with their new “Chocolate at Pinot” Package available at their San Francisco and Sonoma hotels.
Some people get their antioxidants from green tea, and others get them from blueberries. Us? We prefer fight free radicals with red wine and dark chocolate. Hey, it still counts, so don’t judge us. Now thanks to Fairmont, we can indulge our (healthy, we swear!) cravings with this new four-day package.
With it, you can spend the first two days, Willy Wonka-ing it up at the Fairmont Heritage Place, Ghirardelli Square, which is actually in the former world-famous Ghirardelli Chocolate factory facility in the heart of San Francisco. Then take the second two days to relax from the bustle of the big city out at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa, a grandiose pink resort with a nearly century-long history of gentrified rustication near many of Sonoma’s most famous wineries, and just a couple miles from the town of Sonoma itself.

Fairmont Hotels Inspired to Give Back by Ken Burns' New Documentary

The Fairmont San Francisco jumps on the state park philanthropy bandwagon, details below
If you've ever seen any portion of the sweeping TV-documentary The Civil War, then you know who Ken Burns is. The PBS mainstay has been producing and directing films for the network for a quarter century about everything from the Statue of Liberty to architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
When Burns speaks, PBS-o-philes listen, and he's not one to shy away from advocating causes close to his heart. His latest documentary The National Parks: America's Best Idea (how's that for a bold statement?) recently premiered on PBS; it takes a look at famous outdoor landmarks like The Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Yellowstone, and the "people who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved."
That's all well and good, but what exactly does it have to do with hotels? The Fairmont has jumped on the Ken Burns bandwagon, promoting park and nature-related packages and making charitable gestures in the spirit of PBS' giving filmmaker. Hey, if The Fairmont Newport Beach can push an Orange County, naturalist-led "Gold Coast" tour and donate 10 percent of proceeds to the California Commission at the same time, why not?

Eloise to Get Her Own Funky Suite at The Plaza

Is the Plaza turning into the ultimate girly hotel? First the ladies of "Sex and the City." Now Bestey and Eloise.
Perhaps realizing what a faux pas it was to mess with Eloise's house in the first place, The Plaza has just announced a partnership with fashion designer Betsey Johnson to create a one-of-a-kind Eloise Suite inside their hotel. Straight from the official announcement:
The Plaza's two-bedroom Eloise Suite will be whimsically decorated in a color palette of "Eloise pink" and black, and will be full of surprises and distinct "Eloise moments" throughout the guest room. The layout will include one room for parents and a separate Eloise bedroom for the young and young at heart decorated by Betsey Johnson. Plans for the Eloise suite at The Plaza Hotel will begin following New York fashion week.
Conveniently, the Plaza's restored Palm Court will be host to Johnson's Spring 2010 fashion show tonight. As for the suite, no word on the pricing but expect it to be extravagant since regular rooms at the Fairmont Hotel start around $500 a night. And the current Live Like Eloise package starts at $895 a night.
Whatever the folks pay, there better be a Nanny and a pet pug for rent and a turtle chillin' in the bathtub when guests check-in. Just sayin'.

'Sex and The City' Filming Outside The Plaza Hotel Today

Yes, Sex and The City fervor has swept up New York City once again and much like the first SATC movie, we've learned hotels will play a part in the show. While The Bryant Park Hotel got love from the four ladies the last go-around, The Plaza, which re-opened in February 2008 after a lengthy renovations process, will make an appearance this time. And we're happy to say the legendary hotel's cameo will take us back to the Plaza's glory days.
