Not Surprisingly, Paul Ryan Shacked Up at a Fairfield Inn before VP Announcement

Just before presidential hopeful Mitt Romney mistakenly introduced his running mate, Paul Ryan, as "the next president of the United States", Ryan spent the night at Fairfield Inn in North Carolina, ordering take-out from Applebee's.
Given that Romney was once on the board of Marriott Hotels, which is the parent company of Fairfield Inn, this isn't a very surprising hotel choice. (Although, the Applebee's bit is. They do take-out? Interesting.) Of course, the Romney-Ryan ticket isn't exclusively beholden to Marriott hotel brands. Back in April, Ann Romney confessed to staying at Hampton Inns for the free WiFi. For more on the Romney ticket's hotel spending, check out this report from USA Today.
And from now through November, Romney and Ryan will be hitting up all different kinds of hotels on the campaign trail like the Venetian in Las Vegas tomorrow. We have to say that's definitely an improvement from Fairfield Inn, except the WiFi isn't free.

Fairfield Inn Is Fairly Smitten With Mexico

Following up on last week's news that Marriott would be opening a new hotel in Haiti, plus expanding into Serbia, Fairfield Inn announced that it would be setting up a new property in Cabo San Lucas. And not only that: Fairfield's partnership with Mexican operator Pulso Hotelero has proved so successful that they plan to open another 35 Fairfields throughout Mexico.
For those who know the brand's "select-service" appeal (meaning no added frills like a restaurant, bar, or room service), this is good news for jet-setters on a budget.
Rooms at the new five-story Fairfield Los Cabos will start at just $99, and are located just a few minutes' walk from the Marina. Oh, and free wi-fi in all the public spaces. You're already planning your post-New Years getaway, aren't you?

What Is This At The Fairfield Inn & Suites Brooklyn?

We like to keep it fun but informative here at HotelChatter so our newest series, What is This? is devoted to odd-looking items in hotel rooms that upon first glance look as if they serve only a decorative purpose. But everything happens for a reason, right? And we're here to tell you what these things really do.
You'd be surprised at how easily we amuse ourselves in an unfamiliar hotel room. Flipping mystery light switches. Opening closets. Experimenting with the thermostat. The possibilities are endless. But on a recent visit to Brooklyn's second-newest addition, the Fairfield Inn and Suites Brooklyn, we were immediately drawn to the brightest thing in the room—this candy red furniture piece, tucked daintily under the desk. But what does it do?

Would You Live In A Hotel If You Could?

Making the internet rounds yesterday was the story of Joy Bricker, a 79-year-old woman who has spent the past ten years living at the TownePlace Suites Falls Church. And not 'living' as in, she commuted every week between the Virginia hotel and her home. No. The hotel itself was her home, and she loved it.
As she numbered off to the Washington Post the perks of living in a hotel—no utility bills, free breakfast, free wi-fi—we were suddenly struck with the idea that we, too, might enjoy the prospect of life in an extended stay property.
For starters, the cleanliness! We'd never have to do another house chore in our life. And if we chose our room carefully, we might wind up with a killer view right next to our bed—now that is something we'd never get tired of.

Marriott to Build Swankier Fairfield Inns All Over India
Where: India

Just a day after Starwood's W Hotels announced their intentions for India comes news that Marriott Hotels is also expanding in India, this time with their Fairfield Inn brand.
And these Fairfield Inns will be a whole lot jazzier than their U.S. counterparts as Marriott has redesigned this brand specifically for the Indian market.
The WSJ reports:
The result includes a full restaurant, expansive lobby and meeting space, none of which exist in Fairfield hotels in the U.S. The chain also has created a palette based on saffron, turmeric and Indian embroidered textiles.
The brand's first few hotels will be in fairly central locations in major cities such, as Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
And we're hoping the free WiFi in the lobbies and the guestrooms will remain too. Are we right?

The NoMad/NoChe Expansion Continues With a New Fairfield Inn

That weird pocket of Manhattan that some call NoChe (North Chelsea) and some call NoMad (North of Madison Square Park) has seen its fair share of new hotels lately. Everything from Fashion 26 and Eventi to Gansevoort Park and The Ace--with The NoMad and the Flatiron Hotel still on the way. But it's not just the cool kids who are moving in. The area is also getting a brand new Fairfield Inn.
The Fairfield Inn & Suites New York Manhattan/Chelsea is set to open in October, just around the corner from Eventi, and across the street from Hotel Indigo Chelsea.

Fairfield Baltimore Offers Green Rooms for Labor Day Weekend
Eco-conscious travelers heading to Maryland over Labor Day weekend can bunk at Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott - Baltimore Inner Harbor, the city's first green hotel.
The limited-service Fairfield Inns aren't exactly the most exciting of Marriott's brands. But the Baltimore outpost tries to make itself stand out from the ho-hum hotels by monopolizing on its building, converted from a brewery, and adding a bar, and by going green.

Another Tri-Pack Hotel is Now Two-Thirds Open in Times Square

How could we forget that the Tri-Pack hotel in Times Square would have some competition. We got a press release today saying that the Four Points Times Square has opened. When we checked our archives to see what else we have written about this hotel, we found this story which focused largely on Gene Kauffman's Tri-Pack Hotel.
However, we also wrote that he was working on a similar packaged hotel at 40th street that would include "a Four Points by Sheraton, Fairfield Inn and Staybridge Suites, each more than 30 stories tall." For clarity's sake we'll call this new one Tri-Pack BT (Business Travelers.) The other Tri-Pack will have the more budget-y brands of Holiday Inn, a Candlewood Suites and a Hampton Inn.
Now the Four Points is open at Tri-Pack BT but Staybridge Suites won't take guests until January 16, 2010. On the other hand the Fairfield Inn is already open with rooms at $199, making this Tri-Pack hotel two-thirds open.
And yes, that's a Starwood property, an ICH hotel and a Marriott brand all sharing the same space. (Btw for giggles, check out the Staybridge Suites rendering on their site which shows the building as a standalone.)

Fairfield Inn Scores Cute Soccer Guys to Star in New Video
Where: United States
Marriott's Fairfield Inn & Suites has taken to YouTube to promote their bright, contemporary new look. And what they've come up with is actually pretty fun.
Fairfield enlisted a few pro D.C. United soccer players to star in the video, which features them playing an impromptu game of soccer in the lobby. (That’s right, the new lobby design is so hip, pro soccer players can’t resist playing ball in it!)

Fairfield Inn's Makeover: Now In Living Color
We brought you news of Marriott's Fairfield Inn & Suites brand getting a stylin' new look this week, and now we've got the results of the makeover live and in living color.
Check out this video, with more than a few shots of the room and the revamped lobby at the official unveiling of the brand's new look and kicked-up amenity offerings. Watch as wide-eyed guests get excited over the vibrant colors and iHomes!
Bonus: David Marriott weighs in on the "fresh, hip feel" of the new Fairfield.
As for when you can expect to check it all out for yourself: we're told there are 50 properties sporting the style now, and as hotels open and renovate in 2009, the number will grow. They've got about 180 new hotels in the pipeline for the upcoming years, and those properties will all have the new décor package when they open their doors.

Marriott's Fairfield Inn Brand Gets a Fly New Look
If you walk some of Marriott's Fairfield Inn properties, you may start to notice that some of them have a fly new look. We got word from the Marriott Twitter that the brand is getting a bit of a makeover to lend a bright, contemporary look to the hotel's spaces.
The refreshed lobbies will have lots of room for seating and socializing, plus a significantly breezier, more upbeat look, with blues, greens and reds dominating the decor. The yummy-looking complimentary breakfast offerings might put Fairfield in the running for the best budget hotel breakfasts we've been discussing lately, with "delicious breakfast sandwiches and healthy items like fruit, yogurt and whole grain cereals" (anyone tried these? Let us know!)
