'Wynning' While Reading the Wynn Magazine

October 14, 2010 at 4:01 PM | by | Comments (0)

iPads, be damned, we're loving our stroll through print land and our ongoing look at a dying hotel amenity--The Hotel Magazine. Sure, most hotels stock their guestrooms with the trendy magazines of the day or at least place some localized publication on the desks but there are actually a few hotels out there that still publish their own magazine. We've got our hands on a few copies of these rare breeds and we'll be documenting our finds for you here. Know of a hotel magazine we should see before it goes out of print? Send it to us!

We don't really need to tell you what Wynn and Encore Las Vegas are all about but in case you've been undergoing some cryogenics therapy since the early 2000s and have only awoken now, just know that Wynn and Encore are all about luxury. That is all.

Now, anyone who's ever stayed at these twin towers in Vegas will know that these are the classiest rooms on the Strip. While there are good and bad rooms in every hotel, all of the Wynn/Encore rooms are superior to most other Vegas hotel rooms.

So naturally, the Wynn Magazine is all about luxury, specifically the luxury found inside the Wynn and Encore.

'60 Minutes' Gives 13 Minutes of Love to Steve Wynn

April 13, 2009 at 8:56 AM | by | Comments (0)

Last night, CBS' 60 Minutes aired a segment on Steve Wynn, aptly titled "The King of Las Vegas." We assume it was mostly supposed to focus on exactly how Wynn — "The Man With the Midas Touch — has kept his company afloat and has even managed to open up a new property (Encore Las Vegas, if you're just tuning in) during these tough economic times, but it was mostly a Steve-Wynn-is-awesome piece. Which we don't mind at all, because Steve Wynn is pretty awesome.

So: Charlie Rose attended the opening of Encore to interview the King of Las Vegas and to check out just how Steve Wynn — whom Rose has known personally and professionally for a number of years — operates. Naturally, one of the first questions he asked Wynn was why he opened Encore in such tough economic times, to which Wynn candidly replied, laughing: "If I had any idea that this [recession] was going to happen, I wouldn't have. We started this project four years ago."

Will Steve and Elaine Wynn's Divorce Affect the Company?

March 11, 2009 at 11:16 AM | by | Comments (0)

Some sad news today: Steve Wynn and Elaine Wynn are officially getting a divorce. Recall that we'd heard some rumors that the emperor and his wife were in the middle of a very quiet split a couple months ago — a PYT was allegedly involved — but the couple was still on good terms.

For those who haven't followed our somewhat gush-y coverage of the almost-former Emperor's Wife: Elaine has been more than Steve's spouse; she's also been fairly involved in the company, overseeing the retail shops at Wynn hotels and acting as a director on the company's board.

Is Steve and Elaine Wynn's Relationship Now Strictly Business?

January 28, 2009 at 9:39 AM | by | Comment (1)

Oh noes. We're hearing that the Emperor's Wife is maybe notsomuch the Emperor's Wife at all these days.

Elaine Wynn, Steve Wynn's wife and business partner (she oversees the retail shops at Wynn hotels), has married the Vegas hotelier not once but twice: the pair wed first in 1963, then divorced in 1986, then remarried again five years later. We've always loved her because she's come off as a smart, savvy businesswoman and also, um, Jason Kidd randomly gave her his Olympic gold medal once.

When we last checked in on Elaine Wynn, Jason Kidd had given her his U.S. Olympic Gold Medal. Um. Right. So what is Steve Wynn's wife up to now that Encore Las Vegas has just opened?

Well according to the LA Times, the emperor's wife is busying herself with helping the flailing Las Vegas economy. Mrs. Wynn has a real job at Wynn Resorts as a director and she oversees all the retail shops at the hotels. And what a fun job it must have been to select the stores for Encore.

The project, billed as the Wynn hotel's "sexy little sister," includes several boutiques -- Hermès; the new Chanel Ultra-Luxe boutique (the first in the U.S.); the edgy multibrand Ensemble with new styles by Ossie Clark, Thomas Wylde and Philipp Plein and vintage finds such as a 1966 Paco Rabanne Lucite and metal chain-link dress ($10,780); In Step, a temple to over-the-top shoes such as Nicholas Kirkwood's platinum crocodile spaceship-like stilettos ($7,995); and Wynn and Company Jewelry, home to those sliced diamonds.

What's probably not fun? Trying to sell all those luxe goods in a recession. All of this extravagant inventory was ordered before the economy started to tank so the Wynns will have to be more careful about what they order the next time around.

Still, while the Wynns are scaling back in some places (they canceled a black-tie gala for the opening of Encore), they still firmly believe in giving guests a brief chance to experience the high life. As Elaine herself says, "If people can't afford to indulge themselves, they can still appreciate the artistry." We'll try to restrain ourselves.

WTF Hotel News :: Jason Kidd Gives Elaine Wynn His Gold Medal

USA b-baller Jason Kidd is fresh off his gold medal win in Beijing and guess what he's doing? No, he's not going to Disney World. He's going to give his gold medal to Elaine Wynn, wife of Steve Wynn.

Since we could not do this sort of explanation any justice, we're giving you Kidd's own words:

"Last summer, we stayed at the Wynn for (what seemed like) a lifetime, close to three weeks," Kidd said. "We met at a banquet, we got to talking, and she really understands the game.

"I told her I'd make a deal with her, that if we won the gold medal, I'd give it to her. She thought I was kidding. But I told her I had one already, and the way they treated us at the Wynn, it was the least I could do."

While some folk might think this idiotic, we say, "Brilliant." Kidd will always have a VIP room and service awaiting him at the Wynn Las Vegas. And that will probably be comped. Man, it's genius. So genius we feel like training for the Olympics now.

In the latest issue of Vogue we get an inside peek at the woman behind Steve Wynn -- his wife Elaine.

While we were desperately hoping for her to say something stupid, act like a total snob, or both, we found her a downright normal business lady, at least in this interviews. A woman who just happens to be the First Lady of Vegas with top jewelers and clothiers at her fingertips -- most of which end up in her hotels.

She takes the time to get to know each of her staff and their families, and smoothes things over after her husband barks at them.

Mrs. Wynn does occasionally drop some "youthful" slang for the kids. In one instance she referred to her cushion-cut (i.e. expensive) diamond ring as "some bling" she wore to match her rhinestone studded belt.
