The downstairs restaurant at Dream Downtown hasn't exactly had an easy run. First, it opened as the "theatrical dining" concept Romera, by neurologist-turned-chef Miguel Sanchez Romera. The NY Times panned it. Then, earlier this year, a BondSt sushi spin-off opened in the form of Japanese-French fusion joint Cherry.

And now, the NY Post reports that, after an "altercation" inside Cherry, hotelier Vikram Chatwal was thrown out of his own hotel. Yikes.

Indiewalls, an online marketplace that connects artists with local audiences, has curated a rotating exhibit at New York City's Dream Downtown.

By showcasing exhibitions in untraditional spaces, Indiewalls transforms walls into galleries and redefines the white cube.

The current display features works by Allan Hasty & Joseph Grazi, Alicia Debrincat, AVone, and LJ Lindhurst, and is on view throughout different areas of Dream, from the Presidential Suite to the staircase and the ever popular PH-D nightclub. Here's a taste of what graces the walls.

Dream South Beach's Serafina Has a Secret Ingredient

We already told you about the arrival of Serafina, the new Italian restaurant at the Dream South Beach. But what we've since learned is that Serafina has something pretty special going for it — something few Miami hotel restaurants get right, including the two chefs who struggled to get this space going in the past 12 months.

The secret ingredient? Common sense. Yes, the Pizza Tartufo Nero (pictured above) is to-die-for. Just like the Prosciutto & Bufaline, the Farfalle al Limoncello and the boozy popsicles for dessert. But it's what all of these dishes have in common that makes Serafina a standout in a city awash in mediocre Italian restaurants: the fact that they're actually perfectly suited to the climate.

Celeb Performance of 2012: Lindsay Lohan Acts Up And Down

December 28, 2012 at 2:19 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's that time of year again: the 2012 HotelChatter Awards! Today and Monday, we'll be showcasing the best (and worst) of hotels over the past year. But we couldn't do it without you! Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or shoot us an email. And the Award goes to...

Some would say “performance” is a euphemism for “acting out”. We’ll go with either of these defintions, because it doesn’t matter really—girl Lindsay Lohan has been doing all that and then some.

The acts of cray-cray have been numerous this year, from racking up a ridonkulous $46K bill at LA’s Chateau Marmont, the hit and run pandemonium of the Porsche variety outside NYC’s Dream Downtown, and then there was that abuse incident with not-so-BFF congressional aide Christian LaBella at the W Union Square, which involved a physical altercation between the pair and a pulling of a fire alarm. Mercy! And these were just acts that involved hotels! There's a laundry list of more mayhem we're too tired to get into.

When restaurateurs and founders of Serafina Restaurant Group Vittorio Assaf and Fabio Granato were lost at sea, the friends made a promise to one another that if they eventually saw land they would open the best pizza and pasta restaurant they could think of.

Years later, they’ve launched close to a dozen locations of Serafina everywhere from New York City to São Paolo – and now in Miami in the Art Deco and super swanky Dream South Beach.

The new location, which focuses on northern-Italian cuisine, features family recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation. Plus, it boasts a traditional wood stone oven to make the more than 24 varieties of pizza on the menu.

Last month, we told you about an incident that happened outside of The Mercer, involving a red Ferrari supposedly running over the foot of an NYPD officer. The whole bizarre episode was caught on video and made the rounds on YouTube, and then we thought we were done. But no!

For the latest installment of over-dramatized, minor car accidents causing scenes outside of trendy Manhattan hotels, we turn to Lindsay Lohan, who got arrested last night after hitting a guy with her Porsche in front of the Dream Downtown.

Hotels To Chow Down During The NYC Wine & Food Festival

September 10, 2012 at 11:47 AM | by | Comments (0)

Hot on the heels of Fashion Week, the next big NYC event on everyone's lips is the Food Network New York Wine & Food Festival, which runs from Oct 11-14. Taking place in different venues all over the city, the various food-(and wine-, duh!) related events are a great excuse to indulge our two favorite hobbies: stuffing our face, and hanging out in hotels.Much of the finger-lickin' action will be restricted to a few select places that have made their mark as either a reputable dining establishment, or just a place where celebs like to hang.

Here's a look at what's happening at which hotels, and where you'll want to be staying.

By far, the most active hotel on the lineup is Standard High Line, which will be hosting a total of nine events throughout the four-day festival, many of which are part of a "Wine Seminars" series presented by Food & Wine magazine. And though the hotel will no doubt be jam-packed the entire weekend, rooms are still available, starting at $585/night for a Standard King.

Meanwhile, the following hotels will also get their fair share of the booze-y action...

We Got a "Dream" of a Deal With Hotel Tonight

We know, we’ve kind of been obsessed with HotelTonight lately, but we promise it’s for the greater good of all! Call us the Rebels of Hotel Rates, but there’s just something about getting kick-ass deals on normally outside-your-budget hotels.

Case in point: Last Thursday we needed to stay in New York City for a night but weren’t sure what hotel rates would be. Rock bottom because of the impending Labor Day weekend, or sky high because of just that? That morning we checked the usual suspects, Quikbook, SniqueAway, and Jetsetter and everything seemed to be around $250 a night and more. ‘Not bad, for NYC!’ you might think. Well, we just didn’t/couldn’t/wouldn’t PAY those rates. Something in our gut told us things would get better if we just waited until noon.

When the clock struck 12, we opened our Hotel Tonight app and the gold was there. Dream New York for $155 a night! . With a rate that's been more than $269, we knew we had a winner.

Dream Downtown Will Open a BondSt Sushi in Place of Romera

Despite the whispers of a possible sale, the Dream Downtown remains a hot place to be. Why just the other night, Kanye West was at the hotel's PH-D nightclub where he unleashed some previously unreleased tunes (so says Page Six.)

Now comes word that the hotel's shuttered Romera restaurant downstairs will be replaced with a BondSt sushi spot. Word is BondSt partner Jonathan Morr is teaming up with Republic and Studio Gaia to redesign the spot.

Well, we guess that answers our question about the sayings from neuroscientist-turned-chef Miguel Romera that were etched into the bathrooms and staircases, like "I am a doctor who cooks, and not a cook who doctors food."

Once the redesign's complete, the restaurant will then serve up its signature tasty version of Japanese fare which includes not only sushi and sashimi but also entrees such as the kabocha "gnocchi", squid ink pasta and a New York strip steak.

Update: We just want to reiterate that the Dream Downtown's possible sale to the Sahara Group is just speculation at this point. Now get back to your regularly scheduled Dreaming.

Everyone's going down, down, down downtown, including some deep-pocketed Indian investors who recently fronted $570 million for a controlling stake in the Plaza.

The Sahara Group, who also picked up the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in late 2010, is reportedly on a spending spree, and New York hotels are hot, so hot right now. The NY Times reports that Sahara Group may be about to acquire Chatwal's Dream Downtown.

How Easy Is It Getting Up To The Dream Downtown's Rooftop?

Oh, Dream Downtown. In a perfect world, we'd love you all the way. But you sure don't make yourself easy to get to!

Back a few weeks ago, we thought we were doing y'all a favor by posting our list of which hotel rooftop bars to hit up on which days of the week, but since we've gotten some flack on the feasibility of actually getting past the door and up to some of those places, we thought we'd offer some advice on entering one in particular, PhD at Dream Downtown.

Weeknight Rooms At Dream South Beach Going For $200, Chocolate Covered Strawberries Extra

Starting on June 1, Miami visitors can try out a King room at Dream South Beach, which is now in its second year, for $199/night, which is slightly higher than last year's opening rate of $149/night. But we're going to assume that after a year, they've had time to tidy up the edges and can get away with charging more.

The 108 rooms at the Collins Ave hotspot all have access to a rooftop infinity-edge pool, plus Geoffrey Zakarian's restaurant Tudor House, which we sampled last summer.

As a bonus to the $199/night rate, the hotel is also throwing in continental breakfast for two, a bottle of Perrier Jouet champagne, and chocolate-covered strawberries for an additional $50 fee. Which is another way of saying the room is actually $250/night, but with some light nibbles thrown in that still won't really fill you up so you'll just end up heading to Tudor House for dinner and drinks anyway.
