Stockholm's Clarion Hotel is Now Testing Keyless Hotel Rooms
It seems as if Holiday Inn isn't the only hotel to begin testing keyless hotel rooms.
The Clarion Hotel in Stockholm has also started to replace hotel room keys with guests' mobile phones. But while Holiday Inn uses Open Ways technology, whose software guests download to their phones, the Clarion is using Near Field Communication technology so that guests can simply hold up their phone to the room door to open it.
The technology also lets guests check-in before arriving at the hotel and to check-out remotely. And the hotel hopes the keyless technology will actually help with guest saftey.
If a mobile phone is lost, the access credentials can be revoked remotely and then reissued. This makes it impossible for unauthorized people to use a lost or stolen NFC mobile phone.

A Hotel Room Where the Drapes Don't Match the Carpets or the Bedspread
Yes, this was once a real hotel room in Las Vegas at the former Greek Isles Hotel and Casino which has now become the Clarion Hotel Las Vegas.
The hotel's management has assured us that the bedding in the hotel has been updated, even though it appears the website photos have not. The hotel has also made upgrades to its restaurant and its business center yet remember, because this is a Choice Hotel, there is free WiFi throughout.
What we're also digging about this hotel is that it's pet-friendly and has a casino on site (Typically, the budget brand hotels in Vegas do not have casinos.) It's location is decent, next to the Las Vegas Convention Center and close to Wynn/Encore. Room rates start around $84 a night and free continental breakfast is included too.
But will we take a chance on this hotel during our next trip to Vegas? Sure, so long as they update those room photos.

The Clarion Sign: An 'Overblown Diorama of the Scandinavian Sensibility'
Scandinavian devotees might very well froth at the mouth over Stockholm’s Clarion Sign hotel — at least if the NYT is to be believed. Declared Stockholm’s biggest hotel, with “550-odd rooms,” the hotel also won Times-er Frank Bruni’s declaration that it’s “quite possibly” the most Scandinavian (based on Bruni’s travels in Norway, Iceland, Sweden, and “Ikea stores in several continents,” that is) — “a sort of overblown diorama of the Scandinavian sensibility.”
But what does that actually mean? Mod Arne Jacobsen chairs and four kinds of pickled herring at the free breakfast buffet, apparently.

Clarion Hotels To Change Brand Name to 'Ascend'

Evidently there's some news to tell from Choice Hotels. While it's gone unreported, for the most part, by those in the know, we did a little research. And now that we know, we'll tell you.
During a convention earlier this year, the staff got to meet and greet the company's new President and future CEO, former Marriott International bigwig Steve Joyce. And once Steve took the mic, he announced something big was in the works.
Seems there's a rebranding campaign afoot regarding the company's more upscale Clarion Collection of hotels. Word is they'll be rebranded as the Ascend Collection, complete with nifty new logo and designations as "historic," "boutique" or "unique." Hmmmm...this also sounds alot like Aloft by Starwood.
While all this news continues to fly under the radar, such is not the case with Mr. Joyce's earnings. Word is his new gig got him a major raise worth $1.3 million in stock incentives before he even officially assumed his role at the company May 1st.
Forget the nunnery, we say, get thee to a job at Choice Hotels.
