Off With The Red Roof in NYC: Introducing Nyma

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 6 West 32nd Street [map], New York, NY, United States, 10001
July 20, 2010 at 10:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

Being a Red Roof Inn may mean instant brand recognition, but the Manhattan outpost of the budget chain is busting out of the box, shaking off that red roof and going solo. Yep, the former Red Roof Inn on 32nd Street is now Nyma—the New York Manhattan Hotel.

This isn't the first time Apple Core Hotels has de-branded one of their New York properties—last time it was The Hotel @ Times Square, which ditched its old Super 8 identity.

Free of franchise rules, the hotels have more freedom to be themselves. And for Nyma, that means a design overhaul.

Buon Appetito! Apple Core Hotels Tempt With NYC Gelato Tours

May 6, 2009 at 1:21 PM | by | Comments (0)

While New Yorkers pray for the out-of-nowhere blustery days to vanish for good, disgustingly hot weather is just around the corner. But it's tutto benne in the gelato 'hood.

Apple Core Hotels (the company behind the La Quinta Inn Manhattan, Red Roof Inn Manhattan, Comfort Inn Midtown, The Hotel @ Times Square, and the Ramada Inn East Side) has put together a "Gelato Tour" package where fancy ice cream fans can sample the Sicilian style giro del gelato throughout the West Village.

Through the room-and-sweets package, aficionados and amateurs get to tour Grom (an Italian gelati chain with old country flair), L'Arte Del Gelato (featuring Italian classics Stracciatella, Cassata Siciliana and biscotti), and Cones (the corn flavor with an optional sprinkle of cinnamon is recommended).

Apple Core Hotels Wants to Find the Fugliest Room in America

April 9, 2009 at 12:42 PM | by | Comments (0)

Got a fugly room in your house? Is your room as fugly as this one?* Or — if this is even possible — even fuglier?

If so, Apple Core Hotels wants to see a photo of it — and not just to gawk at it and laugh at it. No no: this is for a contest. The hotel group, the company behind five budget hotels in Manhattan (The Hotel @ Times Square, The Ramada Inn Eastside, The Red Roof Inn Manhattan, the Comfort Inn Midtown and the La Quinta Manhattan), has been majorly renovating and sprucing up their properties lately. In conjunction with this, they've launched an "Ugliest Room Contest" — and you can win some cashola you have an ugly room to show off.

For those with less than dashing digs, the process is simple. The contest begins now and entries will be accepted through June 30th at midnight. Applicants are required to submit a photo and a brief description of their "ugly" room online here. One lucky winner will receive a $75 American Express Gift Card and the runner-up “ugly” room champ will be awarded a $25 American Express Gift card.

Ha, we love how they say "ugly" with the extra punctuation — like the ugliness of the room in this photo would be up for debate. Beat this pic by submitting your ugly room here.

*Yes, this was actually our bedroom in college once. Yes, we decorated it that way and we sincerely thought it was awesome at the time.

Look Forward to Tax Day with $4.15 NYC Hotel Rooms

March 23, 2009 at 10:41 AM | by | Comments (2)

Just like rhythm, the tax man is gonna get you, and thankfully hotels are more sympathetic this year. In New York, where you'd be hard-pressed to find someone not directly affected by the economy, Apple Core Hotels, a collection of five budget-friendly hotels in the center of Manhattan, are swooping in to save tax day with $4.15 rooms for the first two weeks of April.

The "Tax Time" package, which even includes free breakfast and coffee along with a central location in the Big Apple, can be had by calling one of the five Apple Core properties—Comfort Inn, The Hotel at Times Square, La Quinta, Red Roof and Ramada East Side—and entering your name into a drawing for the rooms, with ten nights at $4.15 up for grabs. In this case, you can score a room in areas like Midtown or next to the Empire State Building for less than the cost of your Turbo Tax software.

Just be prepared to have your taxes done early enough to enjoy a trip to New York between April 1-April 15, when the $4.15 room rate is valid, and make sure to give the Apple Core reservations line (800-567-7720) a call to register for the promo by March 29. Then, if you do get a nice fat refund from the government, it'll be like they paid you to come to New York anyways.

NYC Hotels Starting to Worry About the Economy

October 21, 2008 at 1:30 PM | by | Comments (0)

Well, color us surprised: hotels in New York City are starting to hurt. The end of the year is traditionally the strongest for NYC tourism (with parades and outdoor skating rinks and such) -- but booking for hotels over the next few months is falling below last year's levels, while the number of cancellations is starting to climb.

The Sunday New York Times had a rather lengthy story describing the state of the hotel industry in NYC and how it's faring during the economic downturn -- but what does this mean for the guest?

Interviewed in the article (and serving as the primary focus, really) are chain hotel bigwigs: Jonathan Tisch of Loews and Vijay Dandapani of Apple Core Hotels among them, who both report declining occupancy (though the "situation is not yet dire").

Hotel Blog Watch: Apple Core Hotels Give NYC Tips

September 22, 2008 at 9:30 AM | by | Comment (1)

In New York, the Apple Core Hotels are a bunch of five mid-range to budget hotels that seem to be doing the job of giving decent accommodation for a reasonably decent price. And they're even doing something a little more.

Yep, the Apple Core gang also run a blog called My Day In New York. They don't make a secret of the fact that the blog is sponsored by the hotels, yet it's surprisingly readable and quite useful.

It's not a super-fancy blog, but they post almost daily with tips about what's happening in NYC. For example, last week they mentioned the Women in Jazz Festival that's running until October 12 and the Under the Bridge arts festival, as well as some tips on where to buy toys. They also include news from Apple Core hotels but these snippets are pretty rare.

This isn't the kind of hotel blog we'll get a kick out of reading for fun, but it's got a few useful tips for NYC holidaymakers, so we do give it an overall thumbs up. Although we would like to see a logo makeover, please.

Manhattan Apple Core Hotels Get a Makeover

August 29, 2008 at 9:42 AM | by | Comments (0)

Apple Core Hotels -- The Hotel @ Times Square, The Ramada Inn Eastside, The Red Roof Inn Manhattan and the Comfort Inn Midtown -- are set to undergo a $15-million brand-wide renovation to be completed by mid-September. Apple Core's other property, The La Quinta Manhattan, is set to undergo the same type of overhaul once the other hotels are all done.

They're replacing all the furniture, wallpaper, carpet, lighting and bedding within each property, adding tech amenities like flatscreens, iHomes and free WiFi in all rooms and public areas (hooray!)

Looks like your jaunt at the La Quinta's kickass rooftop bar just got a little more boozey now that you know you'll have super nice rooms in which to crash should things get out of hand.

NYC Hotels Still Going "Waterfalls" Crazy

July 8, 2008 at 9:15 AM | by | Comments (0)

We already told you about a bunch of NY City Waterfalls packages ... but wait, there's more! Almost every hotel in town wants to ride on the back of these waterfalls so here are a couple more deals--take your pick.

First up there's the deal from the Apple Core Hotels called "Sail Along the Falls". From $257 a night you get accommodation, breakfast and a 25% discount off the two-hour Circle Line cruise tour to see the waterfalls. True, this is one of the cheaper packages available but it's only on until the end of July so it probably won't work for everyone.

Apple Core Hotels Postpone Kids' Post-Holiday Meltdown

December 4, 2007 at 9:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

Just when Junior's coming down from his Christmas-induced toy euphoria, postpone the inevitable tantrum with a trip to New York City. For $150 a night, guests get a night's stay and a free stuffed animal making session at the Toys "R" Us Times Square.

After, the little guy can drag his new companion along for a ride on the 60-foot Ferris Wheel, or on a stroll through Barbie's two-story, dollhouse, depending on his disposition. The Apple Core group includes the La Quinta Inn Manhattan, Red Roof Inn Manhattan, the Comfort Inn Midtown, Super 8 Hotel Times Square, and the Ramada Inn East Side.

Apple Core Hotels Give More 'Free' Amenities To Budget-Conscious Travelers

November 5, 2007 at 3:31 PM | by | Comments (0)

The average room rate for NYC hotel has recently surpassed $300. Ouch! But the Apple Core Hotels group is offering some perks to make your trip to NYC a little more bearable.

Their hotels are offering guests free in-room NY state and toll-free phone calls. The hotels also offer complimentary wifi in guest rooms and public areas, daily breakfast (with Red Bull energy drinks!) and complimentary use of the fitness rooms.

Now here's the catch. Apple Core hotels aren't the swankiest in town. They include very budget chain properties such as the La Quinta Inn Manhattan, the Red Roof Inn Manhattan, the smoke-free Comfort Inn Midtown, the Super 8 Hotel Times Square, and the Ramada Inn East Side. However, these hotels aren't getting such bad reviews on TripAdvisor, compared to their counterparts along US highways. In fact, we were pretty surprised at the praise the Comfort Inn Midtown had gotten.
