When pinning places to go on your next vacation, hopeful travelers might be surprised to find that Adelaide, Australia is a perfect destination to explore a budding art scene and stay in a new hotel. The city has witnessed a few new hotels enter its borders, but The Watson will be the coolest addition to an otherwise sleepy city.

The Watson is the brainchild of Art Series Hotels (the folks behind Melbourne's The Olson, The Blackman and The Cullen.) Planning to open next week, the hotel will offer up 140 suites, an in-house restaurant and fitness center. If you just need to provide this cool address to friends back home, a few long-stay apartments are available as well.

Self Check-In Is Minimal Hassle At Adelaide's Minima Hotel

Calling all artists...and art lovers...and thrifty travelers. Have we got the property for you. Minima Hotel in the South Australian city of Adelaide

The city's first self check-in hotel and serves up some modern and contemporary design by featuring local artists' works. We're not talking about a few pieces of art on the lobby or in the rooms, more like using the room as the entire canvas. Every year, 12 of the 46 rooms are white-washed for 12 new artists to go and throw a splash of color in the room by painting the primary wall.

Currently, the rooms are pretty basic and on an economy scale. Although they are light on the amenities and design, come April all the rooms should be completed by a local artist. The final goal is to have all rooms painted in a different theme. Since the bookings are done online or on the lobby kiosk, guests that want a bit more paint will need to call the hotel group to check availability.

Nobody's Heard Of Australia's Best Hotel

Expedia gave Australian hotel-goers a bit of a surprise this week when they announced that their top 1000 hotels list included an Adelaide hotel as the best Aussie representative.

The South Australian capital city doesn't get too much attention from either vacation or business travelers, but at least according to this survey it's got the best hotel in the whole country: the Majestic Roof Garden Hotel. The 120-room Majestic rated 24th best in the world, even though it's only been open for five years.

As you'd be guessing from the name, this place does have a pretty cool roof garden. It's also in a good location near the main shopping area of Rundle Mall, and since two thirds of its guests are business travelers, it's obviously well-placed for them as well.

And the big bonus is that you get the apparently best hotel in Australia for a pretty cheap rate. For example, they've got an autumn special (that's now in Australia) with a Deluxe King room plus breakfast for A$165 ($125) a night and there are last-minute rates around that are even cheaper.

Get a Summer Deal in January (Down Under)

Down Under where everything is back-to-front, the Stamford hotel chain have just launched their Summer Saver deals. Stamford actually has a chain of 10 luxury hotels across Australia and New Zealand, and the new offer gives a couple overnight accommodation and breakfast for only AUS$130 (about an even hundred bucks). The special runs from December 15 through to the end of January (with New Year's Eve being a blackout night, not surprisingly).

Our favorite Stamford is in the Stamford Grand in Glenelg, the beach suburb of South Australian capital Adelaide. Not just because Glenelg is such a great sounding word (and reads the same forwards and backwards), but because the hotel really is directly on the beachfront with exquisite views. The laidback streets of Glenelg and the nearby tram that takes you directly into the city center all combine to make the Stamford Grand's location something a bit special. The rooms have also been newly refurbished (they did need it, we'll admit) so for a hundred dollars, you can't really go wrong here.
