We Do Brunch at The Breslin and the Verdict Is: It's Ace

At last! The Breslin restaurant inside the Ace Hotel New York is open, and HotelChatter was there on Saturday to sample the goodness. Either the hotel was well-booked this weekend or just as many New Yorkers have been salivating over this opening as much as we have, because the Breslin was jumpin’. We started at the bar, which is always a nice way to pass the time while waiting for a table, but in this case it was not the best introduction to a delicious meal served with just the right amount of attention.
The first sign that the staff are still finding their groove was the wait itself. We needed a table for two—and could see a smattering of them in the dining room—but we were still told the wait would be about 10 minutes. (The Breslin doesn’t take reservations so that was not a factor.)
Settling in at a rickety bar table, we decided to order a Bloody Mary (yes, they are serving booze, despite complaints from the mosque across the street), but just getting the bartender’s attention took 10 minutes itself. Even though there were two other people behind the bar with him, busying themselves with unknown tasks.
Waiting in this brand new but decked out to look old space is not a chore, at least this early in the game, but we hope the staff get into the swing of things soon.

The Breslin in a Battle Over Booze; Now Opening Tomorrow

Meat lovers, rejoice! The Breslin, the long-awaited restaurant inside the Ace Hotel New York, finally opens this week. It was meant to be Tuesday, and then today, but an Ace clerk told us this morning that the opening was postponed until tomorrow. They’re just serving breakfast and lunch for the time being, but with all the hype surrounding the place, this should keep our traps shut and bellies full for a couple more weeks when they start doing dinner.
The Ken Friedman joint had a trial run recently, for “FergusStock” (a pig-eating fest led by British chef Fergus Henderson), and early reports were rapturous. New York magazine’s Grub Street blog said the space was similar to New York cult restaurant Freemans, “with just the right touches of modern sheen and ballroom grandiosity.” More importantly, the preview of the food was also met with applause. Dishes we can expect from April Bloomfield in the kitchen include a half-size pig’s head, a lamb burger with feta cheese, a beef burger with bacon and Cheddar, and (fingers crossed) a mac-and-cheese.

The Ace Hotel’s Breslin Should Open In a Couple of Weeks

We know, we know, we shouldn’t get our hopes up when hotels give us opening dates, or even ETAs, for their exciting new restaurants and bars (not to mention the hotels themselves). But we can’t help it. Not only are there a slew of hot new hotels opening up in New York in the coming months, but lots of new hotel restaurants as well. One we hoped we’d be sitting at chowing down in by now—The Breslin at The Ace Hotel—was sorta maybe going to open on October 8. But that was last Thursday, friends, and we still don’t see no food in that funky looking pub.

Portland's Ace Hotel Enters Fall With New Bikes And Artisan Booze
Ah, fall in the Pacific Northwest; it just makes you long to be outside, wearing your favorite flannel shirt and dreaming of chai tea. Luckily, The Ace Hotel in Portland, Oregon anticipated this and they've amped up their offerings for a refreshed and outdoorsy autumn.
First up are their new, specially-outfitted-for-Portland Swobo bicycles. Now we've all heard about the classic cruisers availabe at New York hotels, but Portland requires something more rugged, more street and trail-ready, and they've found it in their new fleet of six Swobos, with the customizations done by six different Portland bike shops. If you're a hotel guest, then you can feel free to borrow them for the day for free, and take in the fall foliage under your own power.

The Ace Hotel is Too Grungy for the Fancy New York Times

When we stayed at New York’s Ace Hotel this past spring, we deemed its quirky décor akin to “your cool grandpa's basement apartment.” The New York Times, who finally got around to checking in to the new spot, describes it as “a bit too redolent of the past, with grungy (albeit deliberately grungy) furniture and shoddy detailing that make the rooms feel insubstantial.”
Here’s something we all agree on, though: The location is weird. Enough said.
Highlights: The bathroom has a whimsical touch: a faux-Victorian mirror that reads “Love is Meant to Make us Glad.” The writer also seemed to like the soap-on-a-rope over the sink as a way to combat “slimy bar syndrome.” Wi-Fi is free with iMacs available in hallway niches.

Sipping Appropriately Pretentious Coffee at The Ace NY's Stumptown
Did you guys hear the crazy news yet? That The Ace Hotel NYC's Stumptown Coffee opened yesterday, when they said it would? That's insanesomething opening on time in New York, especially where The Ace is involved.
Anyways, we swung by on Labor Day for a sip of the stuff, made famous by Stumptown's attention and connection to everything from the coffee growers to the consumers. This is the first location outside of the west coast for the Portland company, who only boast of a handful of locations in Portland and Seattle. Therefore, it's a big deal to coffee connoisseurs on this end of the country.

Ace Hotel NY Will Be Brewing Up Famous Coffee Starting Monday
You know, we were going to write about hotels for Fashion Week in NYC, but by now all of the movers and shakers have already secured the Thompson LES' penthouse and it'll still be a week before we get up in any of the fashion shows taking place in other properties. So for now, we're going to focus on the immediate importance of announcing that the Stumptown Coffee Roasters inside of the Ace Hotel NYC is opening on Monday.
While we were already lucky enough to try the brew that fascinates many a coffee snob back when we slept here after the hotel's opening, it was served reheated in the temporary breakfast room, and not down in the under-construction coffeehouse.

They're Hot, Hot, Haute! Two Huge NYC Hotel Restaurants Opening in Fall
Oh, how we love autumn in New York, especially in the hotels of New York as their top-notch restaurants turn over the menus to prepare for savory seasonal specials and, in some cases, even turn over their restaurants. Top on the list of hotel eateries due to open this fall are The Ace Hotel's Breslin and a renovation of The Chambers' old Town restaurant into a Midtown branch from the NY foodie masters behind Momofuku's few places.
First up will most likely be The Breslin, the name coming from the previous moniker of The Ace's building. It was originally slated to open in July, but we're giving Ace Hotels a wide berth on everything now after the Great Delay Watch of early '09. Thankfully, we at least have some details on the Roman & Williams-designed space, thanks to Down By The Hipster:

Get Into Levi Strauss' Pants At Ace Hotel Palm Springs' Suite 501
Need an outfit to compliment your new Ace Hotel Palm Springs sneakers? Levi Strauss has partnered up with the desert property to transform one of the hotel's rooms into Suite 501, an environment that evokes the Levi's denim-filled lifestyle.
According to the LA Times, the result is a space with a lived-in, rustic look:
The room featured a denim upholstered headboard, Levi’s pillowcases and artwork from Levi’s most recent campaign, shot by Ryan McGinley. The Walt Whitman poem “Go Forth,” the focus of Levi's recent marketing campaign, is painted on a denim tapestry. The curated ephemera vibe matches the hotel's rustic chic campground aesthetic; canvas covered walls, salvaged furniture, Native America throws and portable record player in every suite.
The stay in the suite, in which case we hope you love Levi's, guests can request the Suite 501 at the Ace Hotel Palm Springs. We're going to guess that it's tagged with nightly standard suite prices, which run between $209 - $369. It's just too bad that it doesn't come with a closet full of Levi's clothing; we love not having to worry about dirty laundry.

After Drowning Death, The Ace Hotel Will No Longer Keep Pool Open All Night

The Ace Hotel Palm Springs, which just opened in February, was hoping to have an all-summer long party with their regular weekend pool festivities but sadly, tragedy struck the hotel last weekend.
A 22-year-old man was found dead in the hotel's pool early Sunday morning.
Redlands resident Kenneth Crawford was a friend of two guests staying at the popular Palm Springs hotel, according to management.
Police investigating Crawford's drowning learned he was among a group of friends that had gone out drinking earlier in the hours prior to the incident, according to Palm Springs Police Sergeant Mitch Spike.
The group had not been drinking at the hotel, Ace owner and manager Alex Calderwood said Monday.

Ace Hotel NYC Laces Up Doc Martens And Chuck Taylors
Forget what brand of hotel toiletries are neck to the sink or the signature scent of the lobby; the hot hotel detail these days is what the employees are wearing ... on their feet. A designer staff uniform might smarten them up and cut a fine figure, but flashy footwear polishes off the look; The Hotel On Rivington knows what we're talking about.
Since The Ace Hotel NYC is still the word on everyone's lips, they're not going to dress their staff in just any other polyester blend suit; it's hipster-cut looks with a winning combination of labels. Coolhunting breaks it down:

The Ace Hotel Rumor Mill: Are LA and Vancouver Up Next?
It seems that our gentle suggestion to open up an Ace Hotel in Chicago fell upon deaf ears: BlackBook magazine ran an interview with Ace Hotels founder Alex Calderwood today, and in it he hinted at the possible next locations for his urban-hip brand of funky hotels. And Chicago was not mentioned. Boo.
LA and Vancouver were mentioned, though which is pretty exciting, if we do say so ourselves:
L.A. and Vancouver would be great places to build, but there’s nothing specific on the board that we’re aggressively looking to move forward with.
Can we start the rumor mill a-churning now, or should we just go back to moping about how our brilliant Chicago idea was not picked up?
Also, interestingly enough, Mr. Calderwood says of the NYC hotel: "In general, the feedback is almost unsettling because we’ve been getting tremendous, tremendous positive feedback from our guests. I expected more glitches." Well, okay. We suppose you don't call the insane number of delays with the opening a glitch, then. (Zing!) And, um, by the way: Ace New York is going for as low as $97 on Quikbook right now, in case you want to check out what all this hype is about for yourself.
