The Palm Springs Ace Hotel & Swim Club is gearing up for its (hopefully, cross-your-fingers) January opening. They now have a reservations page up! Isn't it pretty?

Of course you can't actually make reservations yet. But soon. Pretty soon, in fact. Stay tuned.

Interestingly enough, the sizzle factor of this new hotel is raising expectations for other remodels and updates.

The Desert Sun recently reported that renovations for the Palm Springs Travelodge were rejected by the Palm Springs Architectural Advisory Committee because they were too boring. Awesome, right? Who knew there were other crusaders out there marching for our cause?

[Committee member Doug] Hudson said the hotel is a good example of 1950s and 1960s motor hotel architecture and the owners need to educate themselves about the style, which is "hot and trendy" right now.

"Use some creativity," Hudson said. "Get into the vintage groove and have fun with it."

We guess that The Ace, formerly a HoJo, got in the "vintage groove."

Hoteliers and Designers Gear Up for The HD Boutique Show

Maybe it's your job to order peonies for the lobby flower arrangement, or perhaps you're a big shot hotelier, or is it just that you have a thing for comparing hotel carpeting; in any case,  the hospitality tradeshow HD Boutique runs September 17-18 in Miami and it will be heaven for everyone in the design hotel biz.

A smaller, design-focused version of the big HD Expo held in May in Vegas, HD Boutique will host 700 vendors and artisans in cabana-like booths to facilitate the sharing of new trends and products. And if the pool at The Raleigh is good enough for Chanel, then it'll be the perfect setting for canoodling during the HD gala on September 17.

Super Secret Hotel Insider Goes Inside the Ace Hotel New York

We are pretty stoked to have an exclusive scoop on the upcoming Ace Hotel New York today. A Super Secret Hotel Insider tells us what will be inside when this hotel opens in either January or February of 2009. Enjoy.

I had not seen or heard much about the Ace Hotel until I finally had the opportunity to see it first-hand. It is located at Broadway between 28th and 29th St in an area of midtown Manhattan soon to be transformed into the NoMad district (North of Madison Square Park I guess.)

This company has 3 other properties in the Western US but this is their first NYC hotel. It is still under construction with only a model room open although they are shooting for a Winter 08/09 opening date.

The rooms are supposed to feel like you are staying in a hip friend's apartment in NYC. I have to say they succeeded.

Ace Hotel New York Gets a Website...Kinda

It looks like Ace Hotels has put up a website for it Ace Hotel New York, although it's really not much to look at.

Down by the Hipster is not impressed with what Ace Hotels has put up so far:

The New York version of the boho hipster fave Ace Hotel has hit the web with an uber-boring website.

Perhaps the Ace is too cool for the interweb? We say it's probably because there's not much the hotel can do except post job openings. The hotel is still under renovation and is expected to open in NYC in 2009.

Palm Springs Area Hotel Guide: The Ace Hotel To Open in January

On our weekend trip to Palm Springs we noticed construction going up on the Ace Hotel Palm Springs on Palm Canyon Drive. And today we found this job listing for a Director of Sales and Marketing for the hotel which spilled some detes on what to expect here.

The hotel will have 180 rooms and that distinct Ace personality.

While keeping the bohemian-modern sensibility of Ace hotels in Seattle and Portland, this desert property will be more laid back and natural, with a folk-modern energy. Rooms will be available for the budget traveler as well as those looking for a more deluxe experience.

We had also heard the Denny's restaurant that was on the lot when it was an old Howard Johnson, will be connected to the hotel. And since it's official name is the Ace Hotel and Swim Club, the pool scene will be important. The hotel is scheduled to open in January 2009.

Fun fact? It's just a few blocks away from our VIP reviewer Brad Johns' favorite hotel, the Caliente Tropics.

And good news for bikers. The "Ride Long, Stay Strong" section on the website links to some rambling man talking about motorcycles. We say hog enthusiasts will probably be very welcome.

If you were a big fan of the underground band Pavement back in the day, then you might be interested in this new package from the Ace Hotel Portland.

Former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus and his new band, The Jicks are playing in Portland at the Wonder Ballroom on May for one night only and it's the band's only stop in the Northwest. That's right, they won't be playing in Seattle.

Thus the Ace Hotel is offering out of town Malkmus fans a special package deal. For $175 you get a basic room, two tickets to the show and free parking. For $200 you get a deluxe room, tickets, parking plus a copy of The Jicks' newest album, Real Emotional Trash, on vinyl. Call 503-228-2277 to book, and mention the Stephen Malkmus package of your choice.

If you don't have the dough but really really really wanna see the show in Portland, enter in the hotel's contest to win two tickets to the show, a room at the Ace and the full Malkmus catalog, including the new album.

Ace Hotel Portland is Inspiration for the Number (N)ine Fashion Line

We knew the Ace Hotel in Portland, Oregon was a pretty hip spot but could it really be a fashion muse? Apparently so.

The hotel was the inspiration for the Japanese designer Takahiro Miyashita's Fall `08 menswear line for lable Number (N)ine. In fact, the hotel collaborated with Miyashita on the line which premiered on the runway January 17th in Paris.

A Northwest grunge aesthetic  runs through Miyashita's fall pieces. The show, titled "My Own Private Portland," opened with an Ace Hotel voicemail message. Portland-made Pendleton wool blankets folded on each seat invited guests to snuggle up.

This blankets are emblazoned with the Thompson Elk, a recognizable and historical statue in downtown Portland.

The hotel and Number (N)ine are even working on some more products but for now if you want a blanket (yes, please), you can get them from the Number  (N)ine's Manhattan flagship store, and (this gets us very excited) from the Ace's upcoming NYC outpost.

Ace Hotels Expanding to California, New York

12/05/2007 at 1:18 PM
Tags: , , ,

Seattle's hipster haven, the Ace Hotel, is expanding to both the East and West coasts. While we told you about the planned Palm Springs location Monday, we've since learned more and also heard about a possible Ace in New York.

In Manhattan, the Ace plans to redesign the landmarked Breslin Hotel on a rundown stretch of Broadway (above). Also planned for the hotel is an outpost of Rudy's Barber Shop, a Stumptown coffee shop and maybe even a Spotted Pig-affiliated restaurant.

The California edition plans to install itself in an old Howard Johnson which the hotel bought in October. The 190-room property won't be completely gutted says a local government official, and the Ace plans to leave an adjacent Denny's intact. Wait--a Denny's? That may even be too ironic for the hotel's hipster guests.
